46. Speaking of Zen Taoism, two public cases discuss understanding
The two of them came in, called out to Dad, and said, "These two must be the distinguished guests you always said, this morning, you asked us to go to the market to buy meat and vegetables, and also asked us to drink, presumably to entertain the two, two distinguished guests, you talk first, we will cook." "Don't be busy." Mo Xian hurriedly said.
"Let them be busy, it's just a light meal, besides, among the farmers, you can't make the delicacies of the mountains and seas." Yifan Jushi said with a smile.
"Sorry to keep you busy." Mo Xian said.
"Layman, do you know how to learn?" Xie Cao'er asked curiously.
"That's nothing, I didn't learn, I just chanted the scriptures wholeheartedly, and usually it was just like what I just said." Yifan Jushi said with a smile.
"Senior sister, you don't know, I have read a book, it is Confucian, the book says, the way of sincerity, you can know in advance, probably reciting Buddhist scriptures with one heart, and the mind is one, which is in line with the way of sincerity." Mo Xian spoke, and he found that Xie Cao'er was too focused on supernatural spells.
The white squirrel on Xie Cao'er's shoulder squeaked twice, as if agreeing with what Mo Xian said.
"So, where did the layman get the Dharma?" Xie Cao'er obviously didn't give up yet, Mo Xian shook his head in his heart, he had already talked about her supernatural powers, but she still didn't understand, in the end, she didn't read much.
"I have been a little monk in Puji Temple since I was a child, and I have not received full ordination, but one thing had a great impact on me when I was a child, and it was probably this incident that made me enlightened."
"What's the matter?"
A layman began to tell his story:
It was a story about steamed buns, and that morning, the little monk Yifan found out that the master had gotten 6 steamed buns, and the senior brother had also gotten 6 steamed buns, and only he had gotten 4 steamed buns.
Yifan felt that it was too unfair. Master has 6 steamed buns, he has no opinion, but the senior brother also has 6 steamed buns, isn't he on an equal footing with the master? No, no!
So Yifan found the master and asked for 6 steamed buns. Master said, "Can you eat 6 steamed buns?"
Yifan said loudly: "Yes! I want 6 steamed buns! β
The master looked at Xiao Yifan and took two of his steamed buns to Xiao Yifan.
Soon, Xiao Yifan finished eating 6 steamed buns, he was too full.
Xiao Yifan patted his stomach and said happily to the master: "Master, look, I have eaten all 6 steamed buns." I can eat 6 steamed buns, and I will ask for 6 steamed buns every morning like a big brother in the future! β
Master looked at Xiao Yifan with a smile and said, "You have eaten 6 steamed buns, but if you want 6 steamed buns tomorrow, let's talk about it later!" β
After a while, Xiao Yifan felt that his stomach was swollen and he was also thirsty, and then he went to drink half a bowl of water. Then, Xiao Yifan's stomach was even more swollen than just now, and it was a little painful.
Xiao Yifan began to feel uncomfortable, and he couldn't carry water and sweep the floor to recite the scriptures as usual.
At this time, the master said to Xiao Yifan: "Usually you eat 4 steamed buns, but today you eat 6 steamed buns, and you get two more, but you don't enjoy the benefits of these two steamed buns, on the contrary, they bring you pain." Getting doesn't have to be enjoyment. Don't stare at others, don't compare with others, don't be greedy, don't seek, be naturally content, and be naturally happy. β
Xiao Yifan nodded, covered his stomach, and said, "Master, in the future, I will still eat 4 steamed buns!" β
"This incident inspired me a lot, and then I became a layman, and when I practiced at home, I felt that I was the same everywhere, content, and I was always happy, and before I knew it, I had the ability to know beforehand, but I took it as normal." A layman said.
Mo Xian's heart moved, remembered something, and said, "Layman, are you a Zen sect?" β
"Hehe, Puji Temple is a Zen temple." Yifan smiled.
"No wonder." Mo Xian suddenly realized.
But Xie Cao'er was confused, she asked puzzledly: "Senior brother, the layman said that he is a Zen layman, you seem to understand something, what's going on?" β
"Zen Buddhism is a special sect of Buddhism, its monks form a variety of practice methods, pay attention to the mind, have insight into the Buddha's saying, enlightenment, all beings are Buddhas, if not enlightened, the Buddha is all beings, pay attention to enlightenment in life, and do not require certain meditation, this sect does not pay attention to supernatural powers, but pays more attention to wisdom, supernatural powers are not enemies of karma, and wisdom can break ignorance." Mo Xian said, in fact, he only knows a little skin, and he also benefited from his more than half a year in the scripture building.
"Senior brother, you know so much."
Mo Xian shook his head and said: "Knowing more is just knowledge, and it does not necessarily mean wisdom, a lamp can remove a thousand years of darkness, and a wisdom can break ten thousand years of foolishness, I know more, I'm afraid there will be a knowledge barrier." β
"What is cognitive disability?" Xie Cao'er asked again.
Yifan lay man smiled: "The obstacle of knowledge is to be blinded by one's original knowledge and learning, to produce preconceived ideas, and thus to lose a fair heart, life in the world, all kinds of knowledge is inevitable, it is difficult to avoid the obstacle of knowledge, clinging to the Dharma that has been proved and obscuring its true wisdom as the fundamental wisdom." Practitioners often go astray because they are attached to external appearances, just like meditation, which is originally a means, but monks often forget this, meditate for the sake of meditation, lose its original intention, and the practice becomes empty. β
"Layman Gaojian." Mo Xian praised.
"What is the purpose of cultivation, it is for one's own detachment, this is the foundation of cultivation, strength does not bring detachment, only wisdom, obsessed with meditation, like 'grinding bricks as a mirror'"
"Grinding bricks for mirrors? What's the story? Mo Xian asked, he read the "Tao Te Ching", which said, "Wisdom comes out, there is a big hypocrisy", and Buddhism actually attaches importance to wisdom, is there a misunderstanding, maybe the wisdom of these two families is not the same meaning, Mo Xian guessed correctly, Buddhism said that great wisdom is not people's cleverness, and the wisdom of the "Tao Te Ching" is just people's cleverness.
People believe in books because books inherit human knowledge, but they can't be superstitious about books, and if they believe in books, they are what Buddhists call "knowledge barriers".
"Grinding bricks to make mirrors is a public case of Zen Buddhism, and the story goes like this." Yifan said a public case:
When Daoyi Zen Master was twelve years old, he worshiped Huai Rang Zen Master as his teacher and became a monk.
One day, Huai let the Zen master sit there all day and meditate, so he saw the opportunity to teach and asked, "What are you doing here all day long?" β
Daoyi said, "I want to become a Buddha." β
Zen Master Huairang picked up a brick and grinded it on a stone near Daoyi.
As soon as Dao was so disturbed by this noise, he asked, "Master, what are you doing grinding bricks?" β
Huairang Zen Master: "I grind bricks to make mirrors." β
Daoyi: "How can grinding bricks be used as mirrors?" β
Huairang Zen Master: "Grinding bricks can't be used as mirrors, so how can you become a Buddha if you sit there in a daze?" β
Daoyi: "Then how can I become a Buddha?" β
Huairang Zen Master: "This principle is like someone driving, if the car is not gone, are you taking a taxi?" Or bull fighting! β
Daoyi was silent and did not answer.
Zen Master Huairang said, "Are you learning to sit in meditation or are you learning to be a Buddha?" If you learn zazen, zen is not about sitting and lying down. If you learn to be a Buddha, but the Buddhas are formless and formless, but they can manifest all appearances, not just the appearance of meditation. There is no dwelling in the emptiness of the Dharma, and there should be no trade-offs in the non-dwelling Dharma. If you want to become a Buddha through zazen, you are actually killing a Buddha. If you are attached to the state of meditation, you will not be able to attain the truth of reality. β
After listening to this lecture of Zen Master Huairang, Zen Master Daoyi was like an initiation, so he got down from the meditation seat, bowed to Zen Master Huairang, and asked Zen Master: "How can I be attentive to the samadhi of non-appearance?" (Note: Samadhi means fixed.) οΌ
Zen Master Huairang replied, "If you set your heart to learn the method of the heart, it is like sowing a seed; I am now preaching to you the essentials of the Dharma, like rain from heaven. Because you have internal and external causes and harmony, you should see the Tao! β
Zen Master Daoyi asked again: "Since the Tao is non-color and non-phase, how can we see it?" β
Zen Master Huairang replied: "Only the mind and the Dharma eye can see the Tao, not the naked eye." The same is true of unphased samadhi, which should be practiced with the eyes of the Dharma! β
Zen Master Daoyi said: "Is the Tao successful or bad? β
Zen Master Huairang replied: "If you see the Tao with the mind of birth and destruction, such as becoming and dwelling and destroying emptiness, and think that the Tao also exists in the form of dwelling and destroying emptiness, then the way you see is not the true way, because the Tao is not born and is imperishable and transcends the two sides of birth and destruction. Listen to me:
The heart contains all kinds,
Yu Ze is all cute.
Samadhi has no phase,
What a bad thing to do! β
After listening to Zen Master Huairang's teachings, Zen Master Daoyi immediately opened his mind and saw his true face.
Yifan lay man said this public case, looked at the two of them with a smile, Mo Xian seemed to have an understanding, and Xie Cao'er also faintly seemed to understand something: "Senior brother, is it difficult to practice Zen Buddhism like this?" β
"That's probably it, words are broken, and Tao is the sublimation of the soul in an instant." Mo Xian said, he felt as if he had gained, but he couldn't catch it.
"Isn't it useless for us to cultivate the Tao and meditate and practice qi?" For a moment, her confidence was shaken.
"No, it's about the Tao here, like the Tao of a Zen master such a comprehension, it is rare to find one among thousands of people, we are fools, but it is not that we can not understand the Tao, we work hard, the seeds of the Tao will slowly sprout teeth, as a layman said, we can not indulge in power, but continue to find its roots, one day, we will suddenly realize." Mo Xian saw that her situation was a little bad, and enlightened.
Xie Cao'er let out a sigh: "Even if he is as good as he is, I just need to cultivate my Dao, as Senior Brother said, I am a fool, I don't need to pay attention to any Dao, just do it." β
"The girl is so sensible!" Yifan Jushi suddenly praised, Xie Cao'er heard this public case just now, her head was big, and when she saw Mo Xian say this, she simply ignored it, and didn't care what Zen and Taoism he had, so she practiced according to the master's teachings.
The Tao is not far away, she thinks like this, who said that she does not meet the Tao, the Tao is everywhere, Xie Cao'er's mentality has been adjusted, it is just in line with the Tao, Yifan said that she is so perceptive, however, she is inadvertently in line with the Tao, she didn't realize it, and Mo Xian don't look at the thousand words in his mouth, he can only be regarded as a mantra.
"It's time to eat!" The daughter-in-law brings the dish up.
