Chapter 19: Fight to Fame

Volume: The Italian philosopher of history Vico cleanly slashed the link between poetry and philosophy 3oo years ago. However, over the past 3oo years, poets have sown the seeds of material and image suggestion, cultivating "symbolic forests". With the corresponding means, he succeeded in unifying poetry and philosophy. "One Generation" seems to be a proof of this, in just two lines of poetry, in the unity of the opposition between black and light, dashing across the fence of Vico's handiwork, the philosophical meaning of the chou elephant is truly and charmingly presented to the world.

generation

Author: Gowen

The night gave me black eyes

But I use it to find light

The simplest is often the most straightforward and the most effective. This sentence is perfectly applicable to the understanding of "Generation".

Reading this poem, one can experience three accent points: "dark night" and "black sè" in the first stanza, and "light" in the second stanza. With this sense of language, you will feel that "the night gave me black eyes", and the two "black" are quite interesting.

"Black" is the result of stifling the light, and the night is the tomb of light, a suffocating symbol of a particular era. However, the "black sè's eyes" are undoubtedly the rebellion of the night, and its black sè is "given" by the night, which is the result of the night blocking the light. The eyes of the black sè condense the critique of the jīng god, which uses black to black, and to the huge yín majesty of the night with a deep negation. The darkness of the eyes does not signify turning away from the light, but rather longing for it.

In fact, we can see this poem as a microcosm of the psyche of a "generation". Young people like Govyn's generation grew up in a special period, and the maturity of their hearts included the assumption of suffering, but the suffering gave them more beliefs and ideals, so that they could find light through the darkness of the times, and strive to overcome suffering in the pursuit of God. This kind of expression can be traced back to the creation of the index finger at the beginning of the "special period" at the end of the 6o, such as the famous "Believe in the Future".

The short two lines of the poem, crowned with a broad title, reveal a huge theme, and in the unity of opposites, fully show the charm of symbolism. The dark night in the poem seems to be a "decade of catastrophe", and "a generation" certainly refers to contemporary Chinese who have grown up in this particular historical stage. However, poetry is not history after all, and the capacity of poetry can often be infinitely expanded by the magic of art. If we cross time and space, it is easy for us to see the image of "a generation" in Qu Yuan, Du Fu, Lu Xun and other characters of different eras, they all survive in the "dark night", and they all have particularly keen "black eyes".

The ideals and beliefs that have gone through the ordeal are like a strong and unyielding will and rebellion against the gods.

This is "One Generation", and this is Govyn.

"A Generation" was published in the subsequent issue of Harvest magazine, and Ba Lao himself wrote the volume.

Govyn became famous.

As early as presiding over the Third Plenary Session of the 11 th CPC Central Committee, Comrade Deng denied the merits and demerits of the special period, and made everyone reflect on what the special period brought to China. At this moment, like a thunderclap on the ground, the sudden appearance of "A Generation" presented the fate of a generation's thoughts, struggles and questions in just 18 words in crisp language, which immediately ignited the emotions of the same generation and led to countless discussions.

In the time that followed, all major newspapers and magazines reprinted "Generation", and major scholars, experts, critics, and readers expressed their views and remarks in newspapers and magazines. "Guangming Daily" and "Reading" even published columns:

The poem "One Generation" is not only a self-interpretation of this generation, but also a portrayal of the indomitable gods of this generation. Darkness wants to stifle one's bright eyes, but the strangulation of darkness does not achieve its purpose, but creates its opposite; black sè eyes; It is the darkness that awakens a generation, and makes a generation have a stronger desire and perseverance to find the light. It is this resolute search that allows them to see the unacceptable nature that lies beneath the surface of life.

-- Guangming Daily

Just two lines of poetry express the aspirations of a generation of young people in their quest for truth.

Ten years of catastrophe is a long night, with no stars, no moonlight, not even phosphorus fire. But the thirst for light is irrepressible. From the initial confusion to sobriety, from ignorance to enlightenment, from distress to liberation, all of them are completed in this vast "dark night". Because it is night, it is impossible not to be the eye of night. It's a transfer. The eyes of the black sè are also mutants, likened to a distorted soul, or a shrouded yīn shadow, fission out of the yīn shadow in search of the true and false light. It is the moth that squeezes out the cocoon, the stream that flows over the ditch, and the sun that rises on the horizon. After all, it can't be blocked, and that's exactly what history answers.

The poem is concise, bright, and full of confidence in victory.

- "Reading"

There were so many letters sent to the editorial department of "Harvest" that Lin Yiming, who was in charge of miscellaneous work, shouted that he couldn't stand it and must let Gowen have a treat. While Ge Wen agreed, he was worried that Gu Cheng's boss would suddenly appear and beat him to death.

Today, Govyn finally put his mind at ease, his mood in the past few days can be described as extremely complicated, on the one hand, he is not without pride, on the other hand, he is frightened, he is afraid that what he plagiarized will be betrayed. Now a letter in his hand was sent by Gu Cheng Gu Dashen.

In the letter, he praised him very much, and made his own impressions of "One Generation", especially one of the passages that made Gowen pay attention:

There is nothing more suffocating for me than a totalitarian, dark night of unseen thought. However, all those who are constantly thinking and awakening are not willing to be in the dark night. We will struggle and torture, just like "One Generation", with the eyes full of fear and doubt given to us by the night, and pierce the chest of the night with faith and perseverance, to find the light that symbolizes the resurrection of human beings and people. "One Generation" is really a deafening declaration, and it is a profound summary of history. Thank you, thank you for writing our hearts.

After reading the letter, Govin really felt a little crying and laughing, and somehow Gu Dashen had not yet engaged in the profession of a poet, which was full of light for him.

Troublesome, I couldn't bear to let such a talented poet disappear into the literary world, so Govin wrote an enthusiastic letter to Gu Dashen, encouraging him to create.

"Generation" is only more than 20 words, but "Harvest" magazine brought Govin an income of nearly 30 yuan, you must know that he invited Lin Yiming to eat a meal for just over a dollar. Coupled with the manuscript fees mailed by other newspapers and magazines to reprint "Generation", Govin was worth more than 100 at once, and became a well-known wealthy man in the editorial department, and was often ridiculed by editors.

But it also made Govin even more determined about his goal of becoming a real writer.
