One of the most important reasons why the 80s of the last century is recognized as the golden age in the history of Chinese new poetry is that from December 1983 to January 1984, the "1983 Hazy Poetry School of Chinese Poetry Exhibition" was held by Harvest, the most influential pure literary journal in China's ideological and cultural circles at that time. This is the first exhibition of modern poetry held by Chinese New Poetry since its birth in 1916. This exhibition is not only the most famous poetry event in the history of Chinese new poetry, but also the most important poetry event in the history of Chinese new poetry. Its main characteristics are: the large number of obscure poets who participated, the high quality of the published works, the wide range of influence, and even the transformation of the critics, so this exhibition absolutely occupies a supreme position in the history of Chinese new poetry.

December this year marks the 20th anniversary of the 1983 Hazy Poetry Genre Exhibition held by Harvest magazine.

Looking back on the glorious history that happened 20 years ago, and looking back on the process of Chinese hazy poetry experienced in the past 20 years, the nostalgia for the exhibition in my heart is getting stronger and stronger. In order to relive this precious history, in order to express this deep feeling, I strongly had the idea of restoring this beautiful historical event in a true way. So, in October of this year, after I ended my publishing activities in Beijing, I began to re-search and sort out the ins and outs of this history. In this regard, I specifically found a diary that recorded the relevant contents in those years, and the following is an excerpt:

12 October 1983:

At dinner in the evening, Govin said that he wanted to hold an exhibition of hazy poetry in Harvest magazine, and I was really stunned. Gu Cheng has talked about the plight of many hazy poets and hazy poets, and I admit that I am very dissatisfied with the current situation, but I have never thought about doing anything for hazy poetry. But Govin did—

"The Rising Poems", this review is so well written.

But it was too difficult to get such an idea out of the hazy poems published in Harvest magazine.

But when I heard Govern's sworn words, and heard him say that he needed more help, I don't know why my heart suddenly swelled with a sense of heroism and trembling......

Well, I admit to being instigated by Govyn's language. I'm not sure if Govin will be able to bring this idea to life, but it feels like I've made history myself. It really made me unable to extricate myself.

I'm going to have to get involved!

13 October 1983:

As soon as class got out of the afternoon, I started to rush home, because I was eager to know the progress of Gu Cheng and Gowen.

Gu Cheng was already at home. I got bad news from him—many hazy poets didn't believe Gu Cheng's words!

And then Govyn also returned.

When I heard Govwen say that he was going to write a short message to all the hazy poets in his capacity as editor of Harvest magazine, proving that the news that Gu Cheng had passed on to them was not a joke, I cried out on the spot—without convincing my colleagues in the editorial department of Harvest. In doing so, he is simply gambling with his reputation!

Is it really worth it?!

But I saw the resolute smile on Govine's face. The words of persuasion really couldn't be said for a while.

The light in Govyn's room didn't go out until late, and I didn't know if he had slept peacefully, but I tossed and turned all night and couldn't sleep.

On 14 October 1983:

Early this morning, I saw the text message entitled "Invitation to the Great Exhibition of Chinese Hazy Poetry and Poetry", although it was only more than 500 words, but the sincere and confident words in the letter, I was very excited to read it, and I don't know why I suddenly wanted to cry.

Then Govin still went to Ba's house, and Gu Cheng also took Govern's text message and left. I was the only one left looking at their backs, very depressed. It's a really sad feeling that I can't move with them.

18 October 1983:

Although I expected that after Govyn's letter was sent out by Gu Cheng, it would have a great impact, but the real repercussions were still much beyond my imagination.

In the past few days, all kinds of hazy poetry works and declarations of hazy poetry have been sent to our homes from all over the country. The mailbox at the entrance of the hospital every day can no longer hold the letters sent in the next day. On the two jobs at home, all kinds of poems and letters were piled up, and such a huge workload made Gowen, Gu Cheng and I all dizzy and busy.

So I was like Govin with a suggestion -- find some people to help.

On 19 October 1983:

With the help of the students of the Fudan University Poetry Association, the pressure on the three of us to work is finally much less. It's a pity that almost every one of us has something, and the piles of poems still give all of us a headache.

By the way, Gu Cheng started his poetry lecture activities, and I heard him say that the audience of each poetry speech was very enthusiastic, and the "Selected Lyrical Poems of Shu Ting Gu Cheng" he brought had already been sold out.

When I was in Fudan, I missed the opportunity to listen to his lectures, and when there was no class on one day, I had to go to listen to it once.

21 October 1983:

When I came back at noon today, I suddenly found two young people sitting on the curb by the courtyard gate, and they kept staring at me when they saw me enter, and when I took out the key, they jumped up from the ground, which made people startled.

After chatting, I learned that these two were hazy poets who came from Gansu.

Listening to their babbling words, my heart was moved and at the same time deeply believed in Gowen's words - with such enthusiasm, hazy poetry will definitely bloom dazzlingly!

In the evening, when we were together in a conversation, we made a decision to let these two passionate poets join us.

24 October 1983:

Although everyone has been enthusiastically organizing the poems, as time goes by, the excitement in each of us has become heavy from the excitement at the beginning. There are so many poems sent from all over the country, but we have never been able to confirm whether they will be published in Harvest magazine. Several students from the Fudan University Poetry Association were already quietly muttering about it. They avoided me when they talked about it, but I knew it.

Govyn's face is not very good-looking these days, except when he is flipping through the manuscripts of the poems. Except for a smile on his face, he always seems silent when chatting or eating, and he always seems withdrawn and lonely when everyone is talking. He must be worried about this matter!

Honestly, he was really stressed! I just hope he can get through this difficult time smoothly!

On 25 October 1983:

I found a surprising letter from the pile of letters today. The sender of this letter turned out to be Ms. Bingxin!

The letter was addressed to Govyn, and I gave it to him when he returned at noon. That's right. This guy finally bought a bicycle with a flying pigeon brand, and he will ride back from Ba Lao at noon these days, because he is not at ease because of the work at home.

Govyn, who got the letter, was stunned at first. Then he burst out laughing. It was strange to me that when I asked him, Govin just said that the matter was settled......

26 October 1983:

Today, I learned that the solution of the matter that Govin said was referring to the matter of whether "Harvest" could hold a hazy poetry exhibition.

He actually sent the review of "Rising Poems" to many old-timers in the poetry world, hoping to get their support...... This idea is really bold!

If he doesn't receive a reply, wouldn't that mean that the matter of "Harvest" publishing a hazy poetry exhibition will be yellow?

Lucky!

29 October 1983:

has received replies from many poetry seniors such as Bingxin, Ai Qing, Bian Zhilin, Zang Kejia, etc., but the results are not very good. In these letters, Mr. Ai Qing did not agree with the views of the review of "The Rising Poems". In the letter, he harshly criticized Gowen for playing the piano......

Govin was in a good mood, though. He said that as long as someone agreed with his views, he could take the letter to the editor-in-chief Gao to continue to persuade him.

Mine says, it's cunning guys!

On 30 October 1983:

Uncle Linsa called and asked about the Hazy Poetry Exhibition. My uncle said that we had made a big deal this time, and many of his friends in Guangzhou had heard about it.

After hanging up the phone, I felt a strange emotion in my heart, proud of our actions on the one hand, and a little uneasy on the other.

The whole poetry world and even the entire literary world know what we are going to do?! This sudden pressure is just too much!

Fortunately, what my uncle said when he hung up the phone made me feel a little better.

The uncle said, "You go back and tell Govine that he talked to me on the phone on the 20th, and what I promised him still counts!" "Harvest" is not good, and "Yangcheng Evening News"! ”

It turns out that Govin has already prepared the way back!

Although a full 20 years have passed, the "1983 Hazy Poetry Genre Exhibition of Chinese Poetry" held by "Harvest" is definitely an event worthy of being written about. This poetry exhibition triggered the subsequent "hazy poetry" controversy, which lasted for two years, and its scale, momentum, and radiation depth were the most tempting for Chinese mainland literature four or nine years later. It spreads from every individual poet to every literary person, and its oscillations far transcend the poetry world and spread to the entire artistic field, attracting the attention of people at home and abroad. It ushered in a revolution in the whole concept of literature and the method of criticism, which is rare for people living in this era, so we should not forget this exhibition of hazy poetry caused by the idealized actions of a few young people! This is also the reason why I completed this historical essay on poetry that restores history.
