45. Eat the sea by the sea
Walking through the tidal flats along the mangrove forest, the further east you go, the rougher the ground beneath your feet. The tidal flats soon turned to gravel, which in turn joined together to form reefs and cliffs. The waves crashed on the shore, and the terrain began to become rugged and steep.
Haichen, who grew up on the seaside, is naturally easy to climb high and low. But he still had to take care of Lu Rulan carefully, and turn around from time to time to help him, so as not to wash people into the sea when the big waves came.
The two of them stopped and walked, and finally came to a reef shoal with a small rock cliff at their back, which was quite sheltered from the wind.
"How's the view?"
Haichen gestured to the endless sea in the distance: "Set up a deck chair here, pour a cocktail, and sleep for an afternoon, praise!" β
"You're beautiful."
Lu Rulan actually longed for that kind of scene in her heart, but her face was still tightened by the mud: "What about the good food?" Where is it? β
Haichen pointed casually: "It's everywhere." β
He led Lu Rulan to squat down and look at the reef of a low platform by the sea. I saw that the black and yellow rough rock surface was attached to pieces of dark green creatures shaped like fungus.
"It's called hail algae, which can be dug up and washed with a knife, and can be boiled in soup or fried as vegetables."
He pointed to a messy brown-red seaweed on the side: "This is partridge vegetables, which can be used to fight roundworms when eaten." β
Then he pointed to a large reddish-purple, fleshy-looking strange patch of seaweed on the higher reef: "Know what this is?" β
Lu Rulan shook her head honestly: "Where do I know!" β
"I'm sure you've heard of it, I told you about it the other day."
Lu Rulan was slightly stunned, thought about it carefully, and said tentatively: "Could it be the Hailuo from Hailuo Island?" β
"Clever. This is the jackfruit, which is not only delicious but also contains gum. When used to cook with fish and meat, the soup will condense into jelly. Not only is it easy to store, but it also tastes great. It is said that this gum can also be used to make chewing gum. β
Hearing him say so wonderful, Lu Rulan couldn't help but be curious, and the two of them picked a bunch of pineapples and put them in Lu Rulan's backpack.
After that, Haichen led Lu Rulan to know several kinds of seaweeds, from stone cauliflower, which can be used as a cold drink in summer, to moss that has a bad impression but tastes good...... It was indeed Lu Rulan's eyes opened.
After reading the "vegetarian" and then looking at the "meat" - the light of the tide is obviously not enough, Haichen then asked Lu Rulan to put on her shoes, put on a layer of rubber gloves, a layer of thick gloves from the construction site, and followed herself towards the reef-lined seawater.
"It's much easier to fish for sea urchins than to catch the tide, you bend down and look into the crevices in the rocks. The water here is quite clear, do you see those spiky balls? That's sea urchins. You have to eat them like this, remember, and use a knife to warp them a little bit from underneath. Don't get pricked in your hands or feet, or it will hurt for days. β
As he said this, Haichen raised his knife and pry off a sea urchin bigger than a fist.
Lu Rulan took it cautiously, held it in her hand and weighed it: "It's so heavy!" But how do you open this? β
"Look at me."
Haichen took back the sea urchin, turned it over, found the raised round hole of the sea urchin, cut out a round lid with a knife, and poured out the sea water and debris inside the sea urchin, and the rest was five golden sea urchin yellow.
"Taste it."
Haichen used a knife to pry up a piece of sea urchin yellow and sent it to Lu Rulan's mouth. Lu Rulan hurriedly caught it with her mouth, and with a slight sip, an indescribable tenderness and sweetness filled her mouth.
This is not the first time Lu Rulan has eaten sea urchin, but it is so fresh, to be honest, I have never seen it.
"Is it delicious?" Haichen fed him another bite.
"Delicious!"
With the momentum, the two men immediately began to split up, scavenging for the sea urchins hiding on the shallow reefs. Because of the abundance of resources, they agreed to pick only the big ones and take them, and leave all the young ones in the sea.
But after a while, they had fished out a large net, and then they returned to shore satisfied.
Haichen then taught Lu Rulan to use a knife to pry the barnacles attached to the damp rock wall. Only the dorsal tufts that grow on the top layer to avoid sediment are also packed in a small bag. Seeing that the time is not early, the two of them returned with a full load.
Back in the villa, Lu Rulan took out all the loot and cleaned it. Haichen mounted his bicycle and began his daily patrol with a handstand and self-defense tools. He first went to the construction site and saw Duan Whale and Lin Youqing working together to dismantle the surveillance cameras at the construction site. Then I rode around the botanical garden to the gate.
There was also movement outside the big iron gate.
Su He, dressed in a thick protective suit and galoshes, wearing labor protection gloves and a plexiglass mask, was standing in the corpse pool outside the gate, squinting at the plastic bottle in his hand.
Haichen walked over and greeted: "Brother, is it okay?" β
Su He was obviously in a good mood now, and he actually beckoned him to come over.
The two of them stood still by the corpse pool, and Su He lifted his mask and asked, "Do you smell anything?" β
Haichen really sniffed hard, and then rubbed his nose: "No, there is no strange smell." β
After saying that, he kept another eye and looked into the corpse pool.
Of course, the zombies were still in place, but in just three days, the appearance of the corpses had changed dramatically - the human form had largely disappeared, and as far as the eye could see, there was a large area of thick green slurry with all kinds of clothes floating on it.
"This effect can catch up with the water of kings." Su He folded a branch and leaned into the corpse pool, stirring the slurry that he didn't know what to call it.
Haichen suddenly couldn't figure it out: "Zombies don't rot when they're 'alive', why do they turn into mud after a few days of 'dead'?" β
"Maybe it's because of thisβ"
Su He had been stirring the slurry, turning it over, and a bright white suddenly appeared in the thick green.
Haichen leaned over to take a closer look, only to realize that it was a solid piece the size of a walnut. The surface is silvery white and shiny, with a mysterious faint glow. At first glance, it looks a bit like a large pearl.
"What is this?"
"You ask me, I ask who goes? It's just roughly known that it's in the heads of these zombies. β
As he spoke, Su He lifted the small branch in his hand. In just a few moments, I saw that the parts that had been in contact with the slurry had already sent out new shoots.
In short, the truth will not come out for a while. Haichen said goodbye to Suhe, rode along the Foguang Bridge to the bridgehead defensive wall, confirmed that this side was also too peaceful, and then returned the same way, and met Duan Whale and Lin Youqing, who came to install infrared anti-theft devices on the way, and the two held hands with a sweet expression in love.
After returning to the Botanical Garden, Haichen continued to ride his small bicycle and inspected the rest of the Botanical Garden before returning to the villa.
During the time he was out on patrol, Lu Rulan had already started to make lunch.
The first dish to cook is Wangshio.
He skillfully removed the inedible parts such as the internal organs, eyes, and mouthparts of the tide, then peeled off the outer skin, washed the sediment, and put it in boiling hot water for a short time. Then put the eggs in the water that has been blanched over the tide and continue to heat and steam. He turned again and went to open the shell of the sea urchin.
Just then, Haichen walked in and walked straight into the restaurant.
Lu Rulan asked him to wash his hands quickly: "Come here, help peel the sea urchin." β
Haichen put on his gloves and took the knife, but turned his head to see Lu Rulan starting to walk out.
"Where are you going?"
"The green onion is gone, I'll go outside and pick it."
With that, Lu Rulan walked out, and then appeared in the garden outside the kitchen. Haichen drove the sea urchin while watching him pick and choose on the grass by the lake, and after a while, he pulled a large bundle of white, white, green and green things back.
"Why are there green onions in the field?"
"Yes, this is called shallots, and it is very common in the wilderness. Thinner and more fragrant than shallots. Especially this green onion root is round like a pearl, take a bite, that taste...... Beauty! β
Lu Rulan pointed to the green onion root with an intoxicated expression.
Haichen teased him: "This must have been taught to you by your brother again." β
Lu Rulan ignored him and threw the green onion into the pool to rinse. Turn off the heat and soak the eggs in cold water.
"Once the sea urchin is cut, come and peel the eggs."
"Why is it so troublesome......"
Haichen muttered but did the same, helping to peel off all the boiled eggs. and according to Lu Rulan's instructions, he cut four longitudinal knives on the egg.
On the stove beside him, Lu Rulan had already set up an oil pot to add seasonings such as soy sauce and ginger slices, and quickly stir-fried the pork belly pieces that had been thawed and cleaned in advance.
The aroma of meat rose into the air with the sound of soy sauce, and Lu Rulan then put the scalding tide in and stirred it together, and the fat octopus tentacles released the unique aroma of seafood with the boiling of soy sauce soup, and even Haichen, who was standing on the side, couldn't help but swallow his saliva.
Seeing that the stir-fry was almost done, Lu Rulan turned down the fire on the diesel stove, and then added water, soy sauce, sugar and various seasonings from the canteen. After a brief stirring, place the peeled eggs in the soup and cover the wok with the lid.
"From now on, simmer for half an hour, and then boil the pot to collect the juice."
Leaving aside the meat and egg stew on this side, the two of them went to deal with the cleaned barnacles on the side. Only this time, Lu Rulan wanted to teach Haichen to do it himself.
Cooking barnacles is actually very simple. It is to boil a pot of water, put in ginger, salt, sugar and other seasonings, and then throw the barnacles into it and blanch it to get out of the pot. Put it in a soup bowl with two drops of sesame oil and a handful of chives, and even a cooking idiot like Haichen can do it.
And at the same time as Haichen was cooking the soup, Lu Rulan had already put the sea urchin stewed egg into the steamer. There were five yellows in each sea urchin, and the two of them took only three of them and steamed them with the eggs, and dug up the other two and ate them secretly.
When the last radish mixed with sea radish was served, the fragrant meat and egg stew Wangchao finally came out of the pot. The two of them helped to bring the dishes to the dining table and unplugged the rice cooker. Seeing that the hour was almost up, he went separately to call Duan Xingze and Du Yunfei upstairs for dinner.
After a morning of renovation work, the pharmacy on the second floor has been further improved. Moisture-proof membranes were laid on the floor and walls, ventilation fans had been installed, medicines had been sorted into shelves brought from the site warehouse, and small packets of quicklime had been placed as desiccant.
Duan Xingze, who had worked hard all morning, also received a special reward - as soon as he arrived at the restaurant, he was stuffed by Lu Rulan with a whole braised Wangchao in his mouth.
At twelve o'clock, seven people, one big and one small, as well as a cat and a dog, met in the villa on time and began to enjoy this hard-won seafood feast.
