228. Lying
Grant looked up at his old friend.
"Stinger, famous bounty hunter, you don't seem to uphold 'justice' as you say you are. β
Meryl deliberately spit out half of her tongue.
"Are you still a child?" said Grant, holding his forehead, "and I'm not a naΓ―ve boy anymore. β
Grant stared at Meryl and said:
"You can't fool around anymore. β
Meryl blinked her big innocent eyes:
"You know, you can't always be soft-hearted in this business, and these rumors about me are exaggerated, and they are jealous of my ability and can only slander my character. β
Grant replied earnestly:
"If you continue like this, don't even think about my help. β
Meryl cleared her throat and retracted her innocent expression:
"But I didn't expect that you have been retired for so long and still have those intelligence channels. β
Grant says:
"I'm just retired, not going to the cemetery. β
Meryl says:
"Anyway, you really broke my heart, and the day after I met my old friend, I found someone to investigate his past, which is really ruthless. β
Grant replied:
"That's why I wasn't fooled by you, was I?"
Meryl replied:
"Maybe, but I'm lying, it's for your own good. β
Grant says:
"Melly, I'm an adult. β
Meryl narrowed her eyes:
"But you're stupid as a child, and you're playing a game of justice with that Abbott and that stupid woman, and you're almost going to die in your own game. β
Grant replied solemnly:
"It's not a game, I'm just continuing what the witchers have been doing for countless years, keeping the world in balance. β
Meryl scoffed:
"Balance, that's right, we used to be the guardians of balance, measuring the scales of justice, and holding high the sword of justice, but now is no longer the era of witchers, Grant, the monsters are extinct.
"Now that the Demon Hunter is the one who breaks the balance, you should have let go a long time ago. β
Grant sneered twice:
"So I'm going to have to be a killer like you to be smart? Melly, that's not my way. β
Meryl held up two fingers:
"First of all, I'm not a killer, I'm a bounty hunter, in addition to killing, the remaining monsters are also our hunting targets, and from this point of view, I'm more like a witcher than you. β
Grant says:
"That's right, as long as you pay, no matter what the other party is, good or bad, whether you have wisdom or not, you can kill it. β
Meryl waved her hand:
"Don't interrupt me, number two, I didn't abandon my principles, I took orders selectively, and besides, bounty hunters are just knives, and even if I'm not a bounty hunter anymore, those rich bastards are just changing knives. β
Grant says:
"What if no one wants to be that knife......?
Grant suddenly sighed:
"Forget it, I'm not here to argue with you, the world is so bad that we can't change it, I'm not talking to you about the ethics of the bounty hunter profession, I just hope you don't do that.
"It's just you. β
Meryl was silent for a moment:
"Survival, people always need to survive, but I need your help more now. β
She said in an extremely sincere tone:
"Grant, just trust me this time, I need to complete this mission, it's important to me, and I promise that I will never hurt any innocent people, as long as you help me find that shapeshifter, I will leave immediately, never look back, and never disturb your peaceful life again. β
Grant frowned and lit a cigarette:
"You're sure that shapeshifter is evil and dangerous, and really damn it. β
Meryl nodded:
"Absolutely. β
Grant shook his head:
"Well, I promise you. β
Meryl smiled lightly:
"Grant, you're really my best friend. β
Grant says:
"I don't know where the shapeshifters are hiding, but there is a witcher who is much stronger than me in this school, and if there really is any evil shapeshifters lurking here, I believe he will not be able to escape his eyes. β
Meryl asked:
"Who?"
Grant spat out the smoke ring:
"Professor Hevendelenger, he's half a celebrity in the school, you can find him by just asking anyone, but I warn you beforehand, it's best not to try to fool him, you're no match for him. β
If Meryl really has any thoughts, then only Herwin can see it, because Meryl knows herself too well, and she hasn't changed anything for so many years, but Meryl has changed too much.
She could easily fool herself, but Professor Herwin wasn't.
Meryl smiled:
"You don't know how strong I am anymore, Grant, you've been standing still for too long, I've gotten rid of you a long time ago, but don't worry, I won't be a rival to him, after all, I'm not going to do anything bad. β
Meryl stood up without the slightest hesitation, intending to turn and leave.
Grant reached out and grabbed her.
Meryl looked back at him.
"Melly, don't do anything wrong. β
Meryl shook her head:
"I'm not a kid anymore. β
With that, she broke free of Grant's hand.
She lied, as always.
This quest is no different from any other quest, but it is one of the most common uninteresting quests with no end in sight.
If there's one thing this task really does, it's that the pay is relatively good.
She just wants what everyone loves β money.
Money can buy everything, alcohol, oblivion, pleasure, madness, psychedelic, supreme enjoyment.
In a society on the verge of collapse, happiness only makes sense in the moment.
