Chapter 18: Vines
He looked straight into my eyes and said solemnly, "Miss Wu, I'll explain this to you when I go home, and if we don't hurry up, it'll be too late." â
I was too late to ask anything, but seeing his nervous expression, I didn't dare to ask more.
We limped to the low wooden house, and Lu Yao skillfully tossed the lock cylinder of the house a few times, and the door opened, and the room was obviously much warmer than the outside. There was a single bed, a small wooden table and a chair. On the opposite side of the door, there was a window, tightly closed, which looked as if it hadn't been opened in a long time, and had accumulated a thick layer of dust. The whole wooden house is only about 20 square meters, and it is a little crowded after putting some things. Lu Yao motioned for me to sit on the bed, pulled over the chair on the side of the table, took off my shoes and helped me rub my ankles.
"It's not a big problem, just take a little rest." After that, he helped me put my shoes on.
I looked at the cramped wooden hut and wondered, "What the hell is going on here?" â
Hearing me ask, he was silent for a moment and continued: "Miss Wu, what you see me now is the remnant of my mind in reality. The real me should be unsightly. â
"Ever since the museum incident, this dream has been born. The Lu Yao you know is divided into two bodies, one entity, which is the real me; A body of thought is who I am now. My entity has told you that dreams are dark and unreal, and it is. The snow you see now is only part of it, and at a certain point, you will see another dark world. Once that is the case, you have to remember that no matter what you see or hear, you must never open this door. With that, Lu Yao pointed to the door of the wooden house. The door seemed to have undergone a lot of impact, and it seemed a little overwhelmed.
"What does the world of darkness mean? Why can't you open the door? â
"You'll understand when the time comes."
Before he could finish speaking, the sky outside suddenly began to darken, as if before a storm was approaching, and black clouds pressed down. Seeing this scene, Lu Yao hurriedly pressed the table and chair tightly behind the door, and took out an arm-thick wooden stick from the corner of the wall and looked out the window nervously. I was fascinated by this sudden situation and followed curiously. He told me not to be silent, not to shout whatever I saw.
The sky and the earth gradually became dark, and the snow that continued to drift gradually stopped, and the surroundings were still surprisingly quiet. I wiped a small patch of mist off the glass with my fingers and stared out the window with wide eyes. In this situation, I didn't even dare to breathe, as if I was worried that my voice would wake up the sleeping beast outside.
"Here we are." Lu Yao lowered his voice and said, and there was a creepy sound between heaven and earth.
Rustling...... Rustling......
The sound sounds like skin rubbing against the snow, carrying the cold of the snow and penetrating the heart.
The rustling sound was getting closer and closer to the cabin, and it sounded like scratching my scalp with my hair on my back, and my goosebumps immediately rose. Numerous rustling sounds followed, all of which seemed to surround the edge of the wooden house. Sounds filled my eardrums, and my ears continued to buzz as if they had been struck.
Just as I was frowning and blocking my ears to get rid of the voice, a hollow human face slammed against the glass I was on, just staring at me. His face was pale, his eyes were dark and round, beyond the size of a normal person, and his mouth was unnaturally wide outward, as if he was screaming, but he didn't make any sound. At the same time, a black liquid flowed from his eyes and mouth at the same time, streaking across his pale face, leaving an ink-stained trail. This sudden and terrifying scene made me want to scream, but fortunately, Lu Yao covered my mouth behind my back in time, and I calmed down.
"If you're afraid, don't look at it, just close your eyes and just close it for a while." He whispered in my ear.
After hearing this, I shuddered and closed my eyes, and the rustling sound died away not long after. As I relaxed, I began to gasp for air, and the constant strong heartbeat in my chest made me feel a little suffocated.
"Bang!"
Boom!
Before I could recover my strength, there was a sudden thud on the door of the hut, and the squeaky sound of the straining wooden door was squeaked, and I could feel the tearing sound of the wood fibers breaking. I felt like I was about to get out of bed with the sound of the impact. The heavy impact made the wooden door seem a little unbearable, and it was about to be knocked open. My breathing became rapid, and the wooden stick in Lu Yao's hand tightened.
For some reason, the sound of the pounding on the wooden door was interrupted again, and there was a rustling sound again, and the monsters around the outside of the room seemed to be moving. Immediately after, the whole wooden house made a violent crashing sound from top to bottom, boom! Boom! Boom! I felt like the whole house was going to collapse. I kept silently thinking in my heart to believe in myself, while tightly grasping the hand stretched out by Lu Yao behind my back, curled up in a ball. The dust that had accumulated on the room was shaken off, and suddenly a foul smell filled the room.
The crashing and rustling continued for more than an hour, and I didn't know whether I was sleepy or dizzy for more than an hour, but by the time I came to my senses, the heavens and the earth had recovered to a snowy white, and one by one the crystal snowflakes were falling from the gray-white sky again. Compared to the scene at night, the snow scene is simply heaven.
Lu Yao, who was on the side, saw that I woke up, and finally pulled out his hand and stretched out. I noticed that his gray down jacket was draped over me, and in order to keep me warm, he kept hugging me all the time, and now I was finally able to relax my arms. I laughed awkwardly, looked at him in a thin denim shirt, and handed the down jacket over.
"What just happened?" I asked, grabbing the sheets from the bed and draping them over myself. I don't know how he survives in this environment, and he must be lonely here.
"You've seen all those things out there." He crouched down and tightened his shoelaces. "Those things are like people and ghosts, and when it gets dark, they will come to the cabin, and their target is me. Now it looks like they should have spotted you, too. I don't know what they're trying to do, but they certainly don't want to come in and talk to us. â
I watched as he was dressed and seemed to be heading out. "Where are you going?" I asked.
"It's not always an option to hide here, not to mention that after every such attack, the size of the wooden house will shrink a little, and I am afraid that we will both die at the hands of these ghosts in the end." As he spoke, he looked out the window and made sure he was safe, "I've been looking around for a way to break through during the day, you see a mountain in the distance, right, we're going to the other side of the mountain, there should be no ghosts over there." â
After he finished speaking, he was about to go out. I hurriedly followed, saying that I wanted to go out with him. He didn't agree at first, but he was also worried about whether something would happen to me alone in the cabin, so he allowed me to go out with him.
The two of us held an umbrella and walked in the direction of the mountain in the distance. There was nothing along the way, only snow and scattered stones. Lu Yao dropped a stone every few steps, and every time he dropped a piece, he observed the direction of the previous one and made sure that he was walking in a straight line. He said that the reason why I tripped over the same stone was because the large white color here caused me to have a visual bias, and before I knew it, I walked in a circle, so I went around in place.
After walking for a while, I felt that the snow-capped mountains in the distance were getting closer and closer to us. Suddenly, Lu Yao grabbed me who was still moving forward and motioned for me to stop, only then did I realize that a deep ditch appeared in front of me, if he hadn't reminded me, I would have stepped on it. The deep ditch lay straight in front of us, and there was no edge visible at either end. It was not so much a deep ravine as a cliff, because the snow slag that rolled down at his feet did not show any signs of stopping, and fell straight to the bottom of the cliff. A white mist rose from the bottom of the cliff, and it was this mist that made me unable to tell whether it was on land or in the air, and I almost fell. I was naturally afraid of heights, so I couldn't help but shrink back.
"This is it. As long as we find a way to cross over, we will be saved. With that, he crouched down and groped for something on the edge of the cliff.
"This ravine is so wide, how can we get there?" It is definitely not possible to jump directly over such a width, unless you make a ropeway with something like a rope, it is possible to pass.
"Use this." As he spoke, Lu Yao stretched out his hand and grabbed something, and when I got closer, it turned out to be a vine the thickness of a small arm. The vines are blackish-green and do not look like plants that store zĂ i in winter. "These vines are very thick, as long as we get them down and weave them into ropes, I believe we can get by." With that, he magically took out a hatchet from his pocket and slashed it down at the vines.
I don't know if it's because the wood knife is not sharp enough, or the vine is too hard, no matter how hard Lu Yao tries, he still can't cut down the vine. Seeing how struggling he looked, I ran up to help him.
"Let me try." With that, I took the firewood knife in Lu Yao's hand and slashed at the vine. When I reached the edge of the cliff, my fear of heights intensified, and I tried desperately to calm myself down and reach out to touch the vine. The branches were like chains, wrapped around the cliff wall, and they were all over the place. I was about to start, but I didn't expect the branch to suddenly sprang up as if it had come to life, wrapped around my arm, and dragged me down the cliff. In a trance, the thick black vine seemed to turn into a black python, and I could even feel the scales sliding on my arm.
Seeing this, Lu Yao immediately grabbed me from behind, resisting the pull of the vine, and we were in a stalemate with the vine. I stretched out my other hand and took the wood knife and slashed it down. As soon as the wood knife touched it, the snake-like rattan snapped to the ground, writhed a few times on the snow and froze, instantly losing its vitality.
Snakes are generally spiritual, especially in this environment. An ominous feeling arose in my heart, but Lu Yao didn't feel anything wrong at all, and was very happy that I was able to cut down these vines. I barely cut one and said I wanted to go back.
On the way back, I was in a state of confusion, and I always felt that something was wrong with the scene when I had just cut down a branch. Lu Yao, who was beside me, looked at the vines I had chopped down, and seemed to be extremely happy, and he didn't notice my sad face, and I even felt that the purpose of him taking me to the cliff was to let me cut down those vines.
"Let's go, in a moment the darkness will come again." He looked at the vine branch in his hand, the corners of his mouth rose slightly, and he quickened his pace.
