16.2 acres of surviving old vines
Back in Napa Valley, we stopped by the Bronco Manor.
Ten medium-sized grape harvesting robots are picking grapes in the vineyard. Roadside trucks are constantly transporting the harvested grapes to their respective wineries......
Mechanical grape harvesting is very efficient, and it is possible to harvest all grapes in a short period of time and at a very low cost. It is a good choice for growers with large grape vines, as it can help them reap the maximum profits in the shortest time and at the lowest cost. But it is not feasible for fine wine estates. Mechanical work is often too strong and can easily damage the vines, so manual work is used as in the case of the Casabel estate.
"Ah Huang, Leizi. How about the harvest. Chen Mo got out of the car and asked with a smile.
"The yield per mu is nearly 500 kilograms. It's just that the quality of the grapes is not very good, and they only sell for $1,000 per ton. β
"$1,000, that's a bit low." Chen Mo nodded.
This year's Napa Valley was dry and rainless, and the quality of the grapes was generally good. And it's Napa Valley, the signature wine region of the United States. 160 acres, an acre is almost 6 acres, each acre produces about 3 tons, 160 acres 480 tons, 480,000 dollars. If it weren't for the Mustang Manor purchased halfway, but participated in the management of the whole process, including the manpower management fees and other expenses of the manor for a year, the Mustang Manor should not be profitable this season.
Zhang Lei was more content, and said: "That's good." The estate bought in mid-June can have an income of $480,000 in more than a month, which is already very good. β
Chen Mo smiled, listening to the fourth child's calculations, they really made money.
After watching the grape harvesting robot work in the vineyard for a while, Rayong talked about the idea of opening a tourism company and using the existing resources to receive niche tourists from the country.
The existing resources are Rayong, an internet celebrity and a wild horse estate.
Bronco Manor is a little more remote, on the edge of Napa Valley. But the area here is large enough, 160 acres is a large area, and some of the more famous wineries in Napa Valley are only about 100 acres, producing about 20,000 cases of red wine a year. But in terms of brand value, Mustang Estate is not as good as other wineries.
In general, most of the grapes produced are sold to other wineries, and the remaining small part is used for self-vinification, so this vineyard can only be called a vineyard and not a winery. Moreover, the previous owners of Mustang Manor used it as a vacation place, coming a few times occasionally to bring friends over to play. Therefore, there were stables and horse farms behind the house, and a few horses were kept before going bankrupt.
Chen Mo visited this manor seriously for the first time, and after a turn, in addition to the stable and horse farm, there was also a deserted basketball court. The two houses of the manor are large enough, which are common red tile cuboid houses in the United States, with two floors, and each floor has more than 200 square meters. All told, there are a total of fifteen rooms in the two houses. With a simple renovation, it can be turned into a homestay......
Rayong also didn't think about making the travel company bigger, and only received tourists in Taobao Mall. Fifteen rooms, should be enough.
"Boss, do you want to invest some money in opening a travel company?" Rayong said with a smile.
"Yes. It is incumbent upon us to support our brothers in starting their own businesses. The money paid this season is waived for the time being, and it will be regarded as my investment. Chen Mo smiled and said. This travel company is more like a leather bag company, as long as you renovate the manor's house, it doesn't cost most of the money.
"Okay. That's it. In a few days, Xiaomeng and I went back to China to get things done. β
Bronco Manor has its own wine cellar, in order to celebrate the harvest, but also to wish the success of the 'business', the third child went to the underground wine cellar to pick up a bottle of red wine. The underground cellars are filled with oak barrels, all empty, and there are less than 2,000 bottles of red wine on the shelves. The third child brought out a bottle of the best, but the quality can only be regarded as average. It may be because Chen Mo's mouth was raised in Casaper Manor.
After sitting for a while, Rayong stayed at the Mustang Manor.
After a tiring trip to Los Angeles, returning to Casabel Manor actually feels like home, and the whole person is relaxed.
On the winding road back to the villa on the top of the mountain, Robert saw Chen Mo's car from a distance, beckoned, and waited for Chen Mo to stop the car: "Boss, Mr. Alvin instructed me, if you come back, give him a call." β
βOKγβ
This place is not far from the brewing workshop, Chen Mo turned the car around and drove over directly: "Alwin, Robert said you are looking for me." β
"Yes Boss. That is true...... Problems with the Grand Cru vineyard at ChΓ’teau Red Deer resulted in no Cabernet Sauvignon for their premium wine this season. "Red Deer Winery's Grand Cru vineyard is just 3 acres of vines. The old vine was out of condition, and an acre had been dug up, and some of it had been transplanted to the vicinity of the Red Deer Manor and some had been sent to the Botanical Garden as a landscape plant.
"Huh?" Chen Mo nodded.
"You're not looking to buy a batch of old vine species. I contacted them to buy the remaining two acres of vines. Red Deer Winery agreed, but they wanted our Grand Cru Cabernet Sauvignon. β
"What about the Cabernet Sauvignon production in our Grand Cru? Can you meet the needs of our winery? Chen Mo asked.
"Napa Valley Grand Cru yields a shortage of grapes that are always in short supply, but missing out on these surviving vines is not so easy to find." The Cabernet Sauvignon of Casabel Estate Grand Cru is also more than 35 years old, but the Red Deer Estate is more than 70 years old. Such old vines are also very rare in the Napa Valley area. Alvin wanted to buy back the surviving vines and use Chen Mo's magical means to bring them back to life.
"How much do they want?"
"Five acres. And to ensure the supply for the next two years, the price given is not too high $10,000 per ton of Cabernet Sauvignon. But they are willing to compensate with 2 acres of surviving old vine trees. β
Last year, the average price per ton of Cabernet Sauvignon in Napa County was $6,000 (referring to the price of grapes in secondary regions). Napa Valley is so big, and the area of the top grape region is even more limited, and it has long been carved up by the major wineries. The grapes produced here are generally digested by the winery itself, and even not enough, and the occasional sale is sky-high.
The reason why grapes in Grand Cru are expensive is not only because the grapes are good, but also because the owners of the estates cherish their Grand Cru vineyards. Only by maintaining the old traditional artificial methods can the grapes of the highest quality be cultivated, which is the consensus of the world's leading wineries. The Grand Cru vineyards are usually tended by experienced old grape workers, who work by hand and barely see any mechanical work.
Also, the grapes in the top vineyards tend to be not very productive. In order to ensure quality, a maximum of two to five bunches of grapes are allowed to hang per vine.
Like the Casaper Grand Cru vineyard in Chenmo, only two or three bunches of grapes remain on a single vine. An acre (six-acre) Grand Cru vineyard yields only about a ton.
Tending to a ten-acre Grand Cru vineyard requires five to seven resident workers. Paying them salaries alone costs more than $500,000 a year. Of course, these resident workers can't just take care of the ten acres of Grand Cru ...... But it also illustrates the cost of Napa Valley Grand Parks.
$10,000 per ton, it's a robbery.
The surviving old vine said that it was expensive, and it was not wrong to say that it was worthless. It mainly depends on the demand......
Chen Mo frowned: "In other words, the price I need to pay is the output of a five-acre premium garden for three years. The price is too high. Chen Mo shook his head, not to mention the impact of paying half of the output on the winery, if the Casabel estate wants to sell the Cabernet Sauvignon of the Grand Cru if it is released, it will not be unpopular for $80,000 per ton. After all, the output of the premium park is limited, with a ton of output per acre, and after deducting labor costs and other expenses, 80,000 tons is basically not very profitable. But as long as you are not a fool, no one will sell it, and the Grand Cru is equivalent to the signature of the winery.
"That ......" Alwin regretted, his greatest wish was to grow the best vineyards in Napa Valley and make the best wines in Napa Valley. When Chen Mo gave him thirty catties of cyan Cabernet Sauvignon, he seemed to see this hope. But it's only thirty pounds, which is too little. The production of each new wine is not an occasional one, nor does it mean that good grapes make good wines, but it is necessary to experiment and finally choose the most suitable winemaking method.
"Give them four acres at most, plus supplies for the coming year." Four acres, $10,000 per ton, two years of supply, such a deal is fair.
Alvin nodded, then called Lake.
The so-called sitting on the ground starts and pays back the money on the spot. Now it's not Chen Mo who is in a hurry, but Honglu Winery. Without three acres of Grand Cabernet Sauvignon, their winery's premium red wines this year are out of line. Moreover, this year's Napa Valley has been dry and rainless, and many wine connoisseurs are optimistic about the quality of this season's wines.
Sure enough, Red Deer Winery agreed to Chen Mo's conditions, and immediately came over with a lawyer to sign the contract.
