010 Their Requests
"I have a lot to tell you, let me think about where to start." Dumbledore sat down at the table, comparing the seats to the side, and motioned for Lawrence to sit down, "It's a long story, I hope you'll be able to listen to it and then tell me your decision."
This is one of the few conversations in which the two did not sit face to face across the table, but sat on both sides of the table more easily, so that there was no sense of distance between them.
"Thirteen years ago, on Halloween, I attended every party I passed, and when everyone raised their glasses to the defeat of Voldemort, I was extremely worried. Potter's situation is still dangerous." Dumbledore said,
"The Death Eaters who have lost their masters, but who remain loyal, are no less of a threat than Voldemort, and I must have a meticulous plan in a matter of hours, and I believe I have done it well enough that when I can stop and reflect on what has happened in the past few days, I realize that I have made a grave mistake—"
"When I left for you, your parents had abandoned you in front of the orphanage," Dumbledore paused, "I came quietly to the orphanage, and I couldn't stop worrying, I thought I would see the birth of the second Voldemort here again—but what I saw was that the orphanage was as calm as usual as if it hadn't welcomed new residents."
"I've been observing for a few days, and you've never interacted with people, and no one is curious about you, so I suspect it's probably because you're casting spells so people don't particularly notice you," Dumbledore said, "As worried as I am, I have no reason to let you out of there, and you haven't shown aggression towards Muggles, and there's a lot of stuff for me to deal with, so I'm letting go of it."
"Just six years ago, I went back there, this time with a letter of admission," Dumbledore thought for a moment and continued, "I still have a lot of suspicions about you, I can see that in the seven years you have been in the orphanage, you have not established a close relationship with anyone at all, you still do not show aggression towards Muggles, you just look at the Muggle world very indifferently, but you already have a considerable grasp of magic, and you also have considerable expectations for the wizarding world."
"I'm not sure which house you'll be sorted into, but I secretly hope it will be Hufflepuff, because that's the least dark wizard house," Dumbledore shifted his seat, "but the moment you put it on, it chanted the name of Gryffindor."
"I'm more sure than anyone else that the most dangerous dark wizard in this world can't be from Slytherin," Dumbledore glared at Lawrence, "because people are far more wary of Slytherin than any other house."
"If there's a dark wizard from another house—like Voldemort, but he's not revealing his dark side like Voldemort, is there a way for us to see through him before he's ready to show his fangs? And when he bares his fangs, will anyone be able to stop him?"
"You're in, you're like Tom. Riddle, you show amazing talent in your subjects, but you don't like him, you are cold to everyone, and he always pleases every teacher—except me." Dumbledore stroked his beard, and their conversation was interrupted by a knock on the door, Severus. Snape pushed the door in, he glanced at Dumbledore, and then stared at Lawrence's eyes carefully, but he found nothing, so he slammed the door shut as if venting,
"Did you get to the point, Dumbledore?" Snape asked,
"It's almost there, Severus." Dumbledore blinked,
"The Weasley twins are always playing pranks on everyone, but they always fail to get to you, and you're always not to be outdone," Dumbledore said with a laugh, "Professor McGonagall is keenly aware of this opportunity, so whenever she gets it, she will always punish you for doing some long, but cooperatively completed labor service."
"She knows very well that this doesn't deter you at all, so she's not worried about you not going to continue...... Friendly attacks?"
"Professor Snape may have unexpectedly helped a little," Dumbledore glanced at Snape, who said in a nasal voice of disapproval, "I guess Gryffindor students are always at odds with their enemies in his class, right?"
"You and your twin brother have become pretty good friends in this fight, and Professor McGonagall is relieved that she may not have had a week before she started to have a headache, and she found out that she had probably created the most difficult prank trio since Hogwarts was founded."
"I fully admit that I played an almost negative role in this matter, I want to be able to confirm which side you belong to, I have done a lot of tentative actions, such as giving you a bottle of potions, making sure you have a chance to walk in front of the Philosopher's Stone, and allowing you to meet many high-ranking members of the wizarding world at Nicol's funeral, as I said before, I chose you as a prefect in the hope of increasing your sense of identity with the school, and as you know, there were times when I used the Heartbreaker technique to find out your true thoughts, even not so long ago, When Miss Delacour joined the Order of the Phoenix, I thought that it would almost mark you with the Order of the Phoenix."
"I've done so much, and I've not done as well as Professor McGonagall, so let's count how much you've done,"
"In third year, you and Harry fended off Voldemort and his servants, and brought back the Philosopher's Stone."
"Fourth year, you saw through the Chamber of Secrets, and you and Professor Snape defeated Tom. Riddle's diary and rescued Ginny. Miss Weasley."
"In fifth grade, you saved the souls of two people, one was Sirius, the one you saved by capturing Peter and allowing him to meet Harry, and the other was Remus, who lost three of his best friends one after another in just a few days after Voldemort's defeat, and that was too much for him to find the true betrayer, retrieve Sirius, and free Remus from his misery."
"Needless to say in sixth grade, right? You struggled with yourself for a whole year, but in the end, under the threat of death, you left all your distractions behind and faced yourself, and you may think it was too late, but Lawrence, some things are never too late."
"Harry told us about the hatred you speak, but there is something hateful in each of us, and it's not surprising, your sharpness and coldness are just how you protect yourself."
"The world has always made you desperate since you were little, but you have always had a tender heart, and you have never wanted to take revenge on anyone, and I think it's really remarkable, because we have lost it, whether it is me or Severus."
"I told you there was something I wanted your help with," Dumbledore stood up, bending down and bowing to Lawrence's surprised look and Snape's complicated gaze, "It's not a request, it's a request."
"After you've listened to an old man's suspicions and calculations about you, I want you to listen to my request," Dumbledore straightened, "I'll tell you my request first, and you don't need to tell me your decision right away."
"I've been looking for wizards and witches who want to fight Voldemort, and that's what you see in the Order of the Phoenix, and I'm sure that when it comes time for a decisive battle, there will be many more people on our side than we see now, but it's not enough, it's not enough to defeat Voldemort completely."
Dumbledore showed a rare hint of emotion, Lawrence waited for him to calm down, and Snape moved his fingers a little nervously,
"I have a plan that is almost perfect, what I need is someone who can keep myself alive in front of Voldemort, and who can protect myself, Snape is our internal response, he returned to Voldemort that night, and took a great risk to deliver news for us," Dumbledore said, "I trust him completely, he has a lot of status next to Voldemort, we need more spies."
"I already expected that one day, Voldemort would kill me at all costs, and I believe that he will succeed, after all, I am old and my strength may be declining," Dumbledore said in a tone that seemed to be talking about the weather, "but I am very confident in myself, I believe that at that time, my personal life and death have nothing to do with the situation and plans, and Harry will defeat Voldemort completely as prophesied."
"What prophecy?" Lawrence interjected as he noticed Snape taking a deep breath and tilting his head aside,
"A 'true prophecy' about Harry and Voldemort, I'll tell him in due course," Dumbledore said briefly, "I expected that if I died, before Harry defeated Voldemort, none of us would be able to stop Voldemort one-on-one, and I can almost imagine how many people our side would have to sacrifice because of this gap before their final showdown."
"Those who may be sacrificed, they are not like me, I am old, and it is time for another adventure," Dumbledore looked a little tired, "It was when you were in your third year that I discovered that you had a talent similar to me or Voldemort."
"I know you're curious about our talents, and I'd love to teach you how to develop your talents, but our focus is obviously different, and I'll have to let you find out for yourself, and I call our abilities 'Senses', 'Senses' is a very Muggle word, roughly talking about hearing, sight, touch, smell and taste, these abilities are far more than the average wizard, which allows us to understand magic more easily, and I'm sure you prefer tactile abilities."
"Yes," Lawrence admitted, "to a certain extent, as long as I can feel the magic of that place accurately, I can get the feedback of what is happening there, I think maybe it is the feedback from exposure to the magic in the air or water."
"Can you let me know how far it is?"
"When you're in a labyrinth, you can cover the entire labyrinth with all your might, right?"
"Are you still getting stronger?"
"I think so."
"I think my limit is only ten feet." Dumbledore said, "I thought it was just an illusion, like the meeting that day, I felt like I felt your prying eyes, so I was just whispering casually, but I didn't expect it to be a real ability."
"Let's get back to the point, I think you've already guessed it, confirmed your talent, I know it means that you'll grow faster than people think, I believe you can delay Voldemort alone in the chaos, and even have a chance to create a temporary advantage for our side before Voldemort makes a move, and besides, our original plan will also improve the odds of victory because of your participation."
"It's a dangerous, if not unreasonable, request," Dumbledore said, "This is my request."
"Mine too." Snape, who had been silent for a long time, suddenly spoke, and Lawrence could hardly believe his eyes, because Snape bent down, and then he couldn't believe his ears, because he heard Snape say, "For Harry. Potter."
