050 The bitter fruit of mistrust

"Fudge should be giving a short speech at the Ministry of Magic right now." Dumbledore was dressed in a white robe, and said in a relaxed tone, he clapped his hands, and a cup of hot tea appeared in front of Lawrence, Fawkes was not in the office, I don't know if he was simply going out to hang out, or if he was carrying out the task that Dumbledore requested, "He will tell the wizarding public the fact that Voldemort has returned."

Lawrence took a sip of the hot tea and raised his eyebrows, but did not reply,

"Professor McGonagall is recovering well," Dumbledore seemed in a good mood, "and we'll be able to see her at school on Sunday."

"That's good news." Lawrence nodded,

"That means the seventh graders' prom can be held as scheduled after dinner next Monday," Dumbledore said, "but then we have another problem, we're missing one—"

"It's two, Professor." Lawrence corrected,

"Oh." Dumbledore stopped talking, he carefully studied Lawrence's expression, and confirmed that he really didn't care about it,

"Just like Fred and George don't go back to school," Lawrence said, "we'll all remember what the Ministry of Magic did."

"But that means...... None of us can dance for this ball," Dumbledore blinked, laughing as if thinking of something funny, and then he agreed, "If that's what you'd expect—"

"It's just a choice, Professor," Lawrence explained, "and it's good to graduate as a prefect, Professor."

"Oh, choose ......" Dumbledore nodded, and after a pause, he spoke, "Last night, I told Harry about the prophecy about him."

Lawrence did not speak, but listened quietly, because he knew that Dumbledore had not finished speaking,

"Whatever it is, you've always preferred to make your own choices, and I know you'll be able to accept our decision not to let you join the Order of the Phoenix after a vote—"

"Even though you didn't say anything, I know you don't like the fact that we didn't tell Harry about that prophecy," Dumbledore shook his head, "You think it's up to Harry to choose whether or not to know."

"Let's talk first about two other clever Mr. Wesley," said Dumbledore, "and although you promised me not to rely on the powers at your disposal to obtain some information, I believe you have heard a considerable amount of information from them."

"They guessed that you're on a mission at the Ministry of Magic." Lawrence shrugged,

"You call that prop 'telescopic ear', right?" Dumbledore smiled, "Every few years there is always one or two creative students."

There was a knock on the shiny oak door, and Snape entered, his face pale and holding something in his hand, and surprisingly, Fred and George came in with him, and they first winked at Lawrence, and then began to look at Dumbledore's office,

Snape threw the object in his hand onto Dumbledore's table, it was a telescopic ear, which looked to have been modified in some way, and the shape of the ear was not connected to the long flesh-colored connecting wire,

"Since I came back last night, I've been wondering why Selwyn was able to know about the Ministry of Mysteries, and they didn't look like they had some sort of tacit agreement with Voldemort," Dumbledore pointed to the telescopic ear on the table, "If this thing is in Snape's office, it's not hard to understand."

"I think she put it in right under our noses," Snape squeezed the sentence out of the corner of his mouth, "in that cupboard with the usual materials."

"The day she came to make tea." Lawrence understood,

"And then here's the problem, today we closed the store all day, rummaging through the purchase records before September," Fred cleared his throat, "Judging by the number, the prototype of this telescopic ear should have been sold to Jeffrey of Gryffindor."

"We just found Jeffrey," George said, "and he told us that the telescopic ear was confiscated not long after school started."

A picture flashed through Lawrence's mind, the first student meeting at the beginning of the school year in September, in the office of the student council president, he also removed the wastepaper basket that was in the middle of the road and full of debris, didn't there be a telescopic ear in it?

"I think I've seen it," Lawrence admitted, "and in the student council president's office, I guess Selwyn got it from the confiscated items."

"I think that says a lot," Dumbledore understood, then smiled at the Weasley brothers, "I've heard about the fireworks and I guess you're doing a good business - help me deliver them, Severus."

The twins made a fancy bow to Dumbledore and waved at Lawrence, before finally leaving Dumbledore's office with Snape.

"Continuing with our conversation, you judged from Harry and Voldemort's prophecies that the twins were correct," Dumbledore said, "and then Mr. Weasley was seriously injured, and you made an impulsive decision—"

"I'm not blaming you," Dumbledore shook his head at Lawrence's dark expression, "I can totally understand your impulse—"

"And what about last night?" Lawrence asked, "Maybe I'm harming Harry's mind and making it easier for Voldemort to invade?"

"Snape told me that you taught Harry another way to practice, but it wasn't your fault - it was mine," Dumbledore said calmly, "Snape didn't get over his feelings for Harry's father after all, he kicked Harry out of his office, and Harry admitted that he didn't practice seriously until the end."

"Actually, Sirius is partly responsible for this," Dumbledore continued, "On the night Mr. Weasley was attacked, he couldn't stand the house-elf Kreacher insulting the mortally injured Arthur's family, shouting for Kreacher to get out."

"I don't understand." Lawrence shook his head,

"Kreacher misinterpreted Sirius," Dumbledore explained, "and he went to pledge allegiance to another remaining female member of the Black family, Narcissa, also known as Lucius. Malfoy's wife."

"Although Kreacher can't reveal any information about the Order of the Phoenix, some of the information he can reveal is actually extremely valuable to Voldemort - Harry almost sees Sirius as his father and brother, and the image of Sirius being captured appears in Harry's mind, and Harry will go to the rescue at any cost."

"Don't worry about it anymore, Lawrence, we've all made mistakes," Dumbledore said, "If I had told Harry about the prophecy earlier, he wouldn't have been tempted by Voldemort last night, and if there had been a little more trust between Harry and Snape, he wouldn't have gone to the Ministry of Magic recklessly last night."

"We've all tasted the bitter fruit of distrusting each other—that's the lesson we should take to heart," Dumbledore said solemnly, "I've always stressed that if we trust and unite, we will be able to overcome the threat posed by Voldemort."

"Not my father." Lawrence spoke in silence,

"What?" Dumbledore was a little surprised,

"I think it's Harry's mother, Lily. Potter," Lawrence said, "the man Snape would not dare to face."

It was the first time Lawrence had seen so many expressions on Dumbledore's face—surprise, hesitation, and a little surprise.

"This ...... I'm afraid it's Severus' privacy, Lawrence," Dumbledore said gently, "I'm sure you've found something, but if Severus won't say it, I'd like to ...... We should have the consideration to understand what he did."

"I see, Professor." Lawrence agrees,

"Another question, then—Selwyn," Dumbledore said, "what do you think?"

"It's weird," Lawrence said, "she warned me to watch out for the betrayers in Dumbledore's army, and even locked me up in the Room of Requirement yesterday afternoon, I don't understand how she managed to do it."

"Perhaps," Dumbledore replied, "I've dealt with opponents who seem to be able to 'meet' some big things, but actually, Lawrence, I mean 'Horcruxes' and 'Philosopher's Stone.'"

"That's the Ravenclaw crown," said Lawrence, "I got it from the Room of Requirement, and I took it to Mr. Focos, and—"

"And then Selwin and you made some kind of deal?"

"Yes," Lawrence admitted, "we made a magical vow, she told me who had attacked me in Diagon Alley, and she promised to return the crown to Hogwarts within a year."

"So, Horcrux—" Dumbledore apparently didn't care much about the deal, but his blue eyes behind his half-moon glasses revealed an unprecedentedly sharp blue light,

"I must admit that last night my anger and frustration were no less than Voldemort's, we lost a hole card, Voldemort now knows, his secret of near-immortality has been revealed," Dumbledore said, "but we still have an advantage, like he will never have a chance to know, the content of the 'prophecy', and he will start to worry about whether his protection of the Horcruxes is sufficient, he will start to worry about how much I know."

"He'll even turn his attention to Europe, and I think he'll want to catch Selwyn and ask what the hell is going on—"

"We mentioned Europe, Lawrence," Dumbledore tapped on his desk, "Before we get to this topic, I'm going to make you a belated invitation, yes, even though you haven't graduated yet—"

"Lawrence. Dole. Mr. Rovande," Dumbledore asked solemnly, "would you like to join the Order of the Phoenix?"

"What's there to say about that?" Lawrence said to himself, "I do."
