Chapter 520: Factory 420 still has a good thing

Although the imperial capital is where Yang Hui grew up, the current southwest is where Yang Hui takes root, at least before the foreseeable 2000, it is impossible for Yang Hui to make too many changes in the place of work.

After the project is approved, it is still necessary to go to the 624 Institute to communicate the design ideas with Chief Engineer Liu, not that Yang Hui does not want to communicate with Chief Engineer Wu, but mainly because Chief Engineer Wu once again chose one of its unfulfilled wishes after pushing the core engine: gas turbine.

When it comes to this gas turbine project, Chief Engineer Wu also chose another place to work, which is the 420 factory that has just been incorporated into the Southwest Science and Industry system, and if you want to ask why the 420 plant will have a relationship with the gas turbine, it must be said that the only promising project before the 420 plant was merged into the Southwest Science and Industry: FT-8 gas turbine.

This project can also be regarded as an amazing move made by Factory 420 after seeing no future in the aero engine business: crossing the border, from playing with aviation and engines to making gas turbines. The FT-8 gas turbine is an interesting engine, and it was also the only project of the republics and NATO countries in the eighties that produced results in the large precision turbine class of engines.

FT-8 gas turbine, look at the name to know that it is from Pratt & Whitney's gas turbine project, and this gas turbine can also be regarded as a breakthrough of Pratt & Whitney. Pratt & Whitney may have taken the lead in the third-generation high-thrust military turbofan, but GM has a firm advantage in gas turbines.

And in terms of gas turbines. The most talked about in China and even the world is the LM-2500 engine of the United States, which is continuously improved on the basis of GM's TF-39 turbofan engine. In terms of power, it meets the needs of most of the world's drives and frigates, which makes Pratt & Whitney, which is also one of the two giants, red-eyed. Since you GM can derive the LM-39 gas turbine from the core engine with the TF-2500 engine. Then Pratt & Whitney can also play like this!

Pratt & Whitney's more famous works are PW-2000 and PW-4000 engines, which far exceed GM's TF-39 engine in thrust, and naturally the gas turbine modified on the basis of these two engines is more powerful than LM-2500, which is why there is the FT-8 gas turbine mentioned here.

Well, it sounds like a surprise, the 420 factory actually participated in the development of Pratt & Whitney to develop an engine more powerful than the LM-2500 engine, if this thing can finally produce results, it can be regarded as the most interesting project of the entire republic in the eighties with the United States imperialism.

However, Pratt & Whitney threw such benefits to the republic. How can this be without any selfish motives, the reason why Pratt & Whitney let the 420 factory or the Republic participate in this project is not because it fancy the huge market of the Republic, but in fact, when Pratt & Whitney was developing the FT-8, the US Navy was not interested in the FT-8.

The LM-2500 engine used by the Navy is not comparable to the F-100 engine developed by Pratt & Whitney developed by the Air Force in terms of performance and reliability, and the reason why the US Air Force wants to develop a high-thrust turbofan engine is because the F-100 engine of Pratt & Whitney is unreliable, but the general-purpose LM-2500 engine used by the Navy is quite a reliable engine.

The U.S. Imperial Navy was satisfied with this engine in all respects, and naturally had no incentive to develop another gas turbine engine, although this model of gas turbine was very good. The data looks much better than the LM-2500, but the US Navy is still reluctant to open a gas turbine line in addition to the LM-2500.

This made the fate of the FT-8 gas turbine bumpy all the way, and in order to obtain the installed object, Pratt & Whitney chose the republic that seemed to be easier to deceive at this time. This is the fundamental reason why Factory 420 can participate in FT-8, and this benefit leaking out of the fingers, in Pratt & Whitney's view, is just a stepping stone.

GM's encirclement and suppression of Pratt & Whitney's gas turbine business is almost comprehensive and worldwide. Just after Pratt & Whitney announced its cooperation with the Republic on the FT-8, GM went on to "break the internal embargo in the United States with great sincerity." The most advanced gas turbine of that time, the LM-2500, was delivered to the Navy of the Republic.

That's right, the republic in the late eighties. The 052A ship that was built in the early nineties was the American-made LM-2500 engine, and as for why the Republic was able to obtain the LM-2500 in that special period, the gas turbine for the capital ships of the United States imperialism, and the continuous logistics support in use, this is the legendary power of capital at work.

Pratt & Whitney painstakingly found a way to break through the encirclement of GM on the gas turbine from the crack of the Republic, but did not expect to be destroyed by GM like this, and a series of benefits brought by LM-2500 into China are quite fierce, which not only allowed Pratt & Whitney to enhance the status of the Republic in the FT-8 gas turbine project more heavily, and even squeezed the Spey 202 to gas turbine to death.

This is also Wu Lao was disheartened at that time, and was invited by Yang Hui to the 624 Institute to "scatter his heart" to temporarily leave the troubled waters of the gas turbine market, if the Southwest Science and Industry did not merge the 420 factory this time, Wu Lao may have to continue to work on the core engine development front of the 624 Institute.

But the problem happens to be that the Southwest Science and Industry merged the 420 factory, and naturally took over the FT-8 gas turbine project in the hands of the 420 factory, everyone knows that the 420 factory is a soy sauce on the FT-8 gas turbine, so naturally they will not care too much about this project, and throw it to the Southwest Science and Industry.

Thinking that after the LM-2500 is equipped with the Republic Navy and thermal power stations on a large scale in the future, all parties are focusing on the after-sales contracting of the LM-2500 gas turbine, but how could they think that in the end, neither LM-2500 nor FT-8 will be the final winner.

Of course, the current Southwest Science and Industry must know this, after taking over the 420 factory, the Southwest Science and Industry was also entangled in this project for a long time, especially Yang Hui was even more entangled in this project, you said that this project has no future, but the FT-8 on the previous side was a successful cooperation in the end, and the cooperation was not broken in that special period, and the successful production was finalized after ten years of research and development.

Although this gas turbine was not used in the navy of the Republic in the end, it still has a respectable installed share in the thermal power stations of the Republic, and also has some presence in the entire East Asia and Southeast Asia, and the 420 plant on the previous side also undertakes the logistics maintenance of almost all FT-8 gas turbines in the East Asian and Southeast Asian markets.

But if you want to say that this gas turbine will continue, but because the core engine technology of this gas turbine is in the hands of Pratt & Whitney, the 420 factory cannot produce all the engines, resulting in the previous republic, although it saw that the performance indicators of this gas turbine were far better than the LM-2500, but still did not use this engine as a naval gas turbine, and instead used the GT-25000 engine from Ukraine.

It wasn't until the end that Yang Hui suddenly remembered a question, this FT-8 gas turbine is actually very necessary to be developed, and even the reason why it was abandoned by the Navy has nothing to do with whether the Republic can localize this engine.

It's really too much power of this engine, and some of the ships used in the Navy seem to be high or low, modern general-purpose destroyers are between 6,000-10,000 tons, and four engines of the LM-2500 level are just enough, if you use FT-8 gas turbines (to be continued. )
