This opal can only be cut in conjunction with iron ore, and a thin colored opal is wrapped around the surface of the iron ore, which makes the opal look beautiful because of the contrast of the dark iron ore. Gravel opal comes in different shapes and sizes, from small ones like peas to large ones that can be the size of a family car. Sometimes a whole piece of gravel opal has a natural crack in the joint that can split it in half, so that there are two opal surfaces that look like polished. However, because this opal rough is tightly bonded with iron ore, the thin surface layer of the opal is often destroyed during the ore cutting process.

It's hard to say how much gravel opals are worth, some can be very valuable, but others are inexpensive, depending on the size, color and shape of the gravel opals you dig up.
