Chapter 549: Miss Saigon

After coming out of Central Park, Chen Guan led Eliza and Lin Ying to find a restaurant for a casual meal, and Eliza and Lin Ying shouted that they wanted to go to Broadway to see a musical.

Chen Guanzhi can see that these two girls have a tendency to develop in the entertainment industry, their favorite attraction is the Statue of Liberty, and what they never forget is to go to Broadway to watch musicals. It seems that in a few years, I may be pleasantly surprised to find that I once traveled to New York with two celebrities, which is also a happy thing in life!

Without any hesitation, Chen Guan took Eliza and Lin Ying to the White Avenue, where the Broadway theater is most concentrated, and according to Eliza and Lin Ying's request, he bought tickets for "Miss Saigon" at the Broadway Opera House in New York and entered together.

Chen Guan and the others came early, before the start of the show, the audience was entering one after another, and the theater was noisy.

When the show started, Chen Guan's eyes suddenly lit up, it turned out that the musicals staged in Hollywood were like this, the scenery was magnificent and very beautiful; The lighting is a cold light source, with many and distinct layers, and the latest sound and light technology makes the stage look dreamlike and unpredictable.

According to the program list, the main story line of "Miss Saigon" is the story of the love-hate relationship between an American soldier and a Vietnamese Saigon girl.

This kind of story is innumerable in the history of Chinese literature, and it can be regarded as one of the most old-fashioned stories. However, performing in Broadway theaters, relying on modern sound and light technology, the visual effect is particularly good, and it is even wonderful to have new wine in old bottles.

This is Chen Guan's feeling, because for Chen Guan, who is studying Chinese, this kind of story has no sense of novelty, what is new is the performance form on the Broadway theater stage and the stage effect created by modern sound and light technology.

The story takes place in Saigon, the capital of South Vietnam, on the eve of the victory of the Vietnam War of Resistance against the United States, and the heroine Kim is a prostitute in a nightclub, and she is a nightclub prostitute on her first day. When the curtain opens, Kim is putting on makeup, and the other prostitutes laugh at Kim's shyness while putting on makeup.

After the nightclub performance began, the American GIs and the Vietnamese prostitutes had a carnival together, and the American GIs knew that the Viet Cong was about to fight Saigon and they were going to get out of Vietnam.

The prostitutes in these nightclubs, like all South Vietnamese at this time, hoped that the American GIs would be brought to the United States when they were evacuated and that they would live a good life in the free world. Moreover, tonight's nightclub has a special program to select the most beautiful prostitute to be "Miss Saigon", which will be raffled by American GIs as a gift. These prostitutes all wanted to be "Miss Saigon", thinking that by becoming "Miss Saigon", American GIs would be able to bring her to the United States.

The nightclub owner, French-Vietnamese pimp "The Engineer", uses "Miss Saigon" as his ticket to escape to the United States.

The American GIs carnivaled with a doomsday mentality, the prostitutes and bustards greeted them with the mentality of wanting to go to the United States, the actors on the stage danced wildly, the lights flickered and blurred, and the screenwriter's entry point was grasped well, which immediately attracted the audience and watched it as if they were fascinated.

The male protagonist, Chris, is an American Marine Corps soldier who participates in a carnival with his good friend John. However, Chris is a young man who is coming to a nightclub for the first time, and the environment here makes him want to vomit.

The heroine Kim came on the scene, pure and innocent, which immediately attracted Chris's attention, and he never imagined that on such an occasion, he could meet a beautiful and pure Vietnamese girl.

The "Miss Saigon" crown that night fell to the sexiest prostitute named "Kiki". When "Kiki" asked the award-winning American GI to bring her to the United States, she was flatly refused, and her repeated pleas were to no avail. The scene suddenly cooled down.

John notices Chris's crush on the heroine Kim, finds the nightclub owner Engineer, negotiates a price, buys Kim's first night, and gives it to his friend Chris. So, Kim, who was reluctant in his heart, had to dance slowly with Chris to the music. Suddenly, Chris took out a bunch of money and gave it to Jin, saying that Jin was not suitable to survive in a nightclub, and that this place did not belong to her, and asked her to take the money to redeem herself and leave.

The Engineer squeezes in, thinking that Chris is not happy with Kim, and Chris reiterates that he likes Kim. So, Kim silently led Chris into his room.

After a night, Chris woke up and wanted to pay for Kim, but Kim didn't want money, saying that it was her first night and Chris was the first man in her life. Then it was Kim who recounted the miserable life of his family and moved the male protagonist. Chris immediately said that Kim didn't need to sell himself in nightclubs, he liked her and wanted to live with her, and the two fell in love.

Chris calls John and asks him to cover up for himself anyway and give himself a day off. Chris then goes to the brothel owner, the engineer, to ransom him for Kim. The engineer didn't want money, he wanted a visa to the United States, Chris didn't agree, and the engineer didn't agree to the gold ransom. Chris immediately drew his pistol and threatened the Engineer, who had to agree.

The brothel girls help Kim prepare a wedding for her and Chris. At the wedding scene, Kim's cousin broke in and wanted to take Kim away. Chris declares that Kim is his, and the two men draw their guns and face each other. At this time, Jin said that her marriage contract with Sui was made by her parents when she was a child, and her parents had also died, so the marriage contract was naturally nullified. The years were furious, saying that the days of Americans and prostitutes would not last long, and that their fate could only be to walk and die.

After leaving, Kim was very sad and felt that Chris would also leave her, and Chris repeatedly promised to leave Vietnam with Kim. The two hugged each other and danced together to the song "The Last Night of the World".

No one could have imagined that this song would become a proverb, and for Kim and Chris, this night would indeed be the last night in their world.

The next day Chris returned to the embassy, and the embassy began to evacuate Saigon urgently, the gate was closed, and he could not get out again. Kim also learned the news of the withdrawal of American troops from Saigon, and rushed to the embassy like crazy, trying to find Chris and go to the United States with him. Unfortunately, an iron gate separated them completely.

The rest of the story is not twisty, three years later, when he became a Vietnamese official, he found the former brothel owner Engineer, ordered him to find Kim, and brought Kim to him. The engineer finds Kim in the slum and takes her to meet Sui. Sui confessed to Jin again that he was willing to marry her. Kim refuses, as she is still deeply in love with Chris, and introduces herself and Chris's son Tan to the year. The year was furious, scolded Kim for being a traitor, and scolded the two-year-old Tan for being an enemy of the country, and wanted to kill Tan with a knife. Kim kills the old with a pistol left by Chris, and flees with his son.

At this time, Chris is married in the United States, and his new wife Ellen is lying in bed, tender and sweet!

Kim approached the Engineer for help, who initially turned her down. But as soon as he heard that Tan was Kim and Chris's son, the engineer saw Tan as his visa to the United States, and immediately changed his attitude, saying that he was going to flee to Bangkok with Kim and Tan, and from now on he would be Tan's uncle. Kim also assures the engineer that even if it is at the cost of her own life, she wants Tan to live a happy life. So, the engineer took Kim and Tan and squeezed into a refugee boat bound for Bangkok.

In the third part of the story, Chris's friend John joins the job of helping the children born to Vietnam veterans and Vietnamese women find American fathers, and tells Chris about Kim. Chris and John travel to Bangkok together to find Kim and Tan. Chris's wife, Alan, also arrives in Bangkok and sues Kim that there is no place for Kim and Tan in her and Chris's lives. It was only then that Kim learned that the man she loved dearly had cheated on her.

Alan gives Chris a choice, whether he wants her or Kim. Chris vows to love Ellen forever.

The story ends very poignantly, when John, Chris, Allen, and the Engineer walk to Kim's room, Kim kisses his son Tan's forehead, says goodbye, and shoots himself.

Chris hugs Kim and begs her not to die, and Kim says she just begs Chris to hug her again.

Kim re-uttered the phrase "Why we changed so much overnight" she said the night she and Chris met, and died in Chris's arms. Chris knelt on the ground and stretched out his arms towards Tan!

The musical is over, and an old-fashioned story is interpreted by Hollywood stars with conflicts and contradictions, and the fate of the protagonist deeply affects the hearts of the audience!

Eliza and Lin Ying have already cried so much that they are raining!

Chen Guan studied Chinese and dabbled in dramatic literature, and he had to admit that the play "Miss Saigon" was well performed and could move people. Especially the use of stage props, it is simply incredible, at the end of the plot, there was a real helicopter taking off all over the scene, the use of this kind of props, Chen Guan couldn't imagine!

In this era, the minds of the Chinese have been very liberated, and Chen Guan absolutely cannot use the perspective of class struggle to examine, say some nonsense that the play exposes the aggression and oppression of American colonialism against Vietnam, and will not say anything about Kim's self-willingness, what he sees from this musical is the sadness of people's fate being affected by the times, and what he sees is the brilliance of human nature!

Chen Guan thinks about it, why are so many writers singing praises pure love and reflecting the truth, goodness and beauty of human nature in a highly developed capitalist society like the United States? This is a society where money worship is rampant, and writers live on manuscript fees, so why don't they cater to, or try to cater to, the vulgar cultural needs of commercialization? Why are you still striving for the brilliance of humanity?

This is a question worthy of deep consideration by Chinese writers and critics!

Chen Guan thought that not only "Miss Saigon", a Broadway musical, but also Shakespeare, Balzac, Stendhal, Mark Twain, etc., all the world-famous literary giants have not only exposed the ugly side of society, but also promoted the truth, goodness and beauty. In a certain way, criticism is to promote the better progress of human society and to promote the brilliance of human nature!

This is the fundamental reason for the longevity of literary masterpieces!
