Chapter 10: The Rampant of Zeus (3)

Honorius certainly does not forget this famous historical event.

Ambrosius, Bishop of Milan, was a prominent bureaucrat in the first half of his life, and was baptized at the age of forty to become the most accomplished bishop after Christianity was "justified" in Rome - and it was he who made the baptized Theodosius the Great a meek little sheep at the end.

Under the guidance of the shepherd Ambrosius, the emperor became more and more pious and relied on God's favor and protection. Eventually, the bishop used the emperor's unique power to legislate Christianity as the state religion of the Roman Empire.

However, of course, this could not satisfy the ambitious bishop, whose ultimate goal was to make clear the subordination of God to the emperor before the believers of the empire—he had to guarantee the absolute superiority of the Christian Church over the power of the emperor.

The Bishop, who did not give up until he achieved his goal, has repeatedly exceeded the authority of the Bishop of Milan.

In 392 AD, taking advantage of the east-east of the empire, in northeastern Syria, the Catholics took advantage of the emperor's momentum to eliminate the infidels and took the opportunity to set fire to the churches of Judaism, which taught Theodosius the Great his power for the first time.

At that time, the 21-year-old puppet emperor Valentiani II had just been killed, and Theodosius the Great finally unified Eastern and Western Rome once again, becoming the sole ruler of the great empire. He had always had ambitions and wanted to win the hearts of the people, so he issued an order in response to the matter that the local magistrates should punish the criminals severely, and at the same time, he asked the local bishop to use the church's funds to rebuild the synagogue and donate it to the Jews in order to calm the people.

As soon as he learned of this, the Bishop of Milan immediately handed the Emperor a letter of protest in vehement. In his letter, he pointed out that the use of the property of the Christian Church to build pagan facilities is an affront to the state religion and a great insult to the church as a whole.

Theodosius the Great, of course, thought his ruling was just, so he ignored the letter.

However, God seemed to have arranged for it, and it was not long before he had to go to Milan on duty, which led to the opportunity of Bishop Ambrosius.

As soon as the Emperor was seated at the podium, the bishop began to deliver a speech that attacked Judaism to the congested crowd of believers.

He said that the tribe of mankind redeemed by Christ's sacrifice did not include the Jews, because they had always been blind believers. Then, in an unquestioning tone, he stressed to Theodosius the Great that no one should forget the blessings of God.

The implication of this sentence is: "Who did you rely on to sit on the throne, but you have to figure it out!"

Since Christianity was established as the state religion of its own, Theodosius could not do the opposite. He was therefore obliged to withdraw the order to severely punish the prisoners and to use the property of the Christian Church to rebuild the synagogue, and the Bishop of Milan demanded that he specifically indicate in the order that he had only decided on his advice.

From then on, non-Christian Roman citizens could no longer expect the same legal protection as Christian citizens. Roman law, which protected all citizens regardless of religious beliefs, is a thing of the past.

This was only the first round of the Bishop of Milan to completely subdue Theodosius the Great, and the decisive battle was much more thrilling!
