Lu You left a poem on his deathbed

When Song Xiaozong first ascended the throne, he was determined to change the policy of humiliating and seeking peace, and he wanted to do a great job of restoring the Central Plains. In 1163 A.D., www.biquge.info he appointed a well-known veteran, Zhang Jun (pronounced jùn), as his privy envoy.

Zhang Jun decided to send troops to the Northern Expedition, and asked the imperial court to issue an edict, calling on the people of the Central Plains to rise up to resist the war and cooperate with the Song army to recover the lost territory. At that time, there was an editor in the Privy Council, Lu You, who was very literate, so Zhang Jun sent Lu You to draft this edict.

Lu You is a famous patriotic poet of the Southern Song Dynasty, a native of Shanyin, Zhejiang, and when he was a child, it was the era of the fall of the Northern Song Dynasty. Lu You has tasted enough of the pain of the national disaster since he was a child, and he has also seen and heard many singing and weeping deeds of the soldiers and civilians in Jiangnan against the Jin soldiers, and in his young heart, he has grown a deep affection for the motherland and the nation.

When he was a teenager, Lu You was able to write excellent articles because of his diligent study. At the age of twenty-nine, he took the examination in the two Zhejiang regions and was taken the first place. It just so happened that Qin Xun, the grandson of the traitorous minister Qin Hui, also took this exam. Qin Hui hinted to the examiner before the exam that Qin Xun would win the first place. The examiner didn't buy his account, but he still acted impartially, allowing Lu You to win the first place.

This incident made Qin Hui very annoyed. In the second year, Lu You went to Lin'an, the capital, to take the exam. The examiner found out about Lu You's literary talent and wanted him to be among the best. When Qin Hui learned of this, he was even more angry, and arrogantly ordered the examiner to cancel the qualification of the Lu You exam, and also to hold the examiner in the two Zhejiang regions responsible. After that, Qin Hui held a grudge against Lu You and did not allow him to participate in the work of the imperial court. It wasn't until Qin Hui's death that he went to Lin'an to serve as an editor of the Privy Council.

Lu You enthusiastically supported the Northern Expedition. However, Zhang Jun, who served as the commander-in-chief, lacked the ability to command. The two main generals under Zhang Jun were suspicious of each other again, and friction broke out. Not long after the Song army sent its troops, it fought a defeat at Fuli (now north of Suxian County, Anhui), and the Song army retreated on all fronts.

The Northern Expedition failed, and the ministers, who had always advocated peace, attacked Zhang Jun in front of Song Xiaozong, and said that Zhang Jun's use of troops was originally instigated by Lu You. Later, Zhang Jun was expelled from the imperial court, and Lu You also resigned and returned to his hometown in Shanyin.

Song Xiaozong was threatened by the Jin soldiers, and his determination to resist Jin was shaken. The following year, he signed a humiliating peace treaty with the Jin Dynasty, and after that, he never dared to mention the Northern Expedition again.

Almost ten years later, Wang Yan, the general in charge of the military in Sichuan and Shaanxi, heard of Lu You's reputation and invited him to Hanzhong to be his staff. Hanzhong was close to the front line of the anti-Jin resistance, and Lu You thought that if he went there, he might have the opportunity to participate in the anti-Jin battle and contribute to the recovery of the lost territory, so he happily accepted the appointment. When he got there, he once rode to the edge of Dasanguan to observe the area occupied by the Jin. In Wang Yan's yamen, he often saw with his own eyes the common people in the areas occupied by the Jin army, risking the danger to send military information to the Song army. These scenes gave him hope for the future of the confrontation with Kim.

After a detailed investigation, he proposed a plan to Wang Yan. He believed that to restore the Central Plains, he must first recover Chang'an, and asked Wang Yan to accumulate military rations in Hanzhong, train the team, make all preparations, and attack at any time. However, at that time, the Southern Song Dynasty court in Lin'an had no plans for the Northern Expedition, and most of the generals in Sichuan and Shaanxi were arrogant and corrupt, and Wang Yan had no way to deal with them, let alone send troops according to Lu You's advice. Lu You's hopes were disappointed again.

Soon, Wang Yan was transferred, and Lu You was also transferred to Chengdu, where he served as a senator under Fan Cheng's subordinates. Fan Chengda is his old friend, although it is a relationship between superiors and subordinates, he does not pay attention to general officialdom etiquette. Lu You's anti-gold volunteer was not realized, and he was depressed, so he often drank and wrote poems to express his patriotic feelings. However, ordinary people in the officialdom are not accustomed to him, saying that he does not pay attention to etiquette and law, and his thinking is decadent. When Lu You heard this, he simply gave himself a nickname, called "Fang Weng". Later, people called him Lu Fangweng.

After another twenty or thirty years, the Southern Song Dynasty changed two more emperors, Song Guangzong Zhao Dian (pronounced dūn) and Song Ningzong Zhao Kuo, and the Southern Song Dynasty was never determined to regain the lost territory. Lu You has lived an idle life for a long time, and he pinned his patriotic enthusiasm on his poetry creation.

In 1206 AD, Han Yanxuan (pronounced tuōzhòu) served as prime minister and launched a large-scale northern expedition. This made Lu You very excited. However, Han Yanxuan's Northern Expedition was not fully prepared, and there were many contradictions within the imperial court, so that the last Northern Expedition failed again. Song Ningzong and a group of capitulation ministers killed Han Yanxuan and presented his head to the Jin Dynasty, making a humiliating peace treaty.

Lu You's lifelong desire to regain the lost territory and reunify the motherland has never been realized. He can only use his poetry to express his love for the motherland and his worries about the nation. He worked hard throughout his life and left behind more than 9,000 poems. Among the poets of all generations in our country, his creation is the most abundant.

In 1210 AD, the eighty-six-year-old patriotic poet fell seriously ill. When he was dying, he still wanted to restore the Central Plains. He called his children and grandchildren to his bedside and read his last heartfelt poem "Shi'er":

When I died, I knew that everything was empty, but I couldn't see Kyushu with sorrow.

Wang Shi set the Central Plains Day in the north, and the family sacrifice did not forget to tell Naiweng. (To be continued.)
