35. Chapter XXXIX
Easter is just around the corner.
The weather was fine and Easter eggs were prepared.
She returned to the Bentley house with Mr. Darcy that day, and Darcy made a request to invite Caroline and Charles to visit Darcy's relative, Madame Catherine de Bauer, at church on Easter.
"This ...... Not okay? Caroline was surprised for a moment, and wondered.
She just thinks that she and Charles are just friends with Darcy, and is it okay to visit her friend's elders on a day like Easter?
Charles pretended to hold the newspaper and pricked up his ears to listen to the conversation between the two, and when he heard this, he suddenly revealed his face hidden behind the newspaper, "Oh, of course! I mean, I haven't met Madame de Baul yet, Darcy you told me about it! β
Darcy's face remained unchanged, and he nodded, "Yes, I told you before, it's my aunt. β
Seeing this, Caroline blinked, "If Charles thinks it's okay, then of course I can, but inform Louisa, I guess she and Mr. Hearst will definitely come to visit us." β
Charles nodded approvingly, "Yes, it will, I received a letter of visit last year, and this year, I guess it's already on the way." β
Darcy glanced at Caroline, not knowing what she had in mind, and looked a little confused, "Allow me to introduce you to my aunt, Catherine de Baul, and my cousin, Miss Anne de Baul. β
"What kind of person is it?" Charles asked curiously.
"They are all decent ladies and ladies, and they have a good taste for fashion, and likewise, they have a lot of property." Darcy spat out these words expressionlessly, which sounded rather perfunctory, but also, who could question the net worth of Mr. Darcy's relatives?
Caroline nodded, "It's time for some gifts, Charles, what do you say?" β
"Of course! Does this need to be asked? We are friends with Darcy, how can we despise Madame and Mademoiselle? Charles's exaggerated expression amused Darcy, and his complexion softened a lot, but he was still a little depressed, and his expression was much darker than usual.
Caroline noticed this, and she wanted to ask, but in the end she didn't say anything, after all, from someone like Mr. Darcy, all he could get from him was what he wanted to tell you.
"Since Darcy says that Madame Catherine de Bauer is in very good taste, Caroline, do you think you can handle the things in our factory?"
When Charles asked about this, Caroline hesitated, and in all fairness, what their factories produced was good for conscience, and it was divided into three general classes for the people of London, the ladies and gentlemen, the ordinary women, and the workers.
Naturally, a lot of thought was put into the material stitches and the colors of the finest clothes, but she still had no idea what she was doing, and it was said that Madame de Baul was not very easy to get along with, and she always felt that she would not be able to get along with her.
Darcy saw Caroline's entanglement, and said quietly, "Auntie's mind is not too complicated, I think it's okay when the mind arrives, and as for its value, I don't think she cares too much." β
Joke! Caroline immediately pouted, she had seen the minds of those ladies in social situations, and she said that she didn't care, but she was secretly comparing whose things were better, more valuable, and more perfect in design.
But you can't talk to Mr. Darcy about that, Caroline nodded casually, "Well, I see." β
Darcy obviously wanted to say something, but when it came to his lips, he said, "Then I'll have the carriage pick you up the day after tomorrow." β
Charles said yes and asked, "Where are we going?" β
"Kent."
###
Rosins.
The carriage drove slowly through one garden after another, and the windows of the houses in the gardens were stained glass, which is said to have been built with great expense by Monsieur Louis de Baul.
It looks very magnificent here, although it is different from the style of Pemberley Manor, but it can always be compared, as for who is better, in her selfish heart, Caroline still thinks Pemberley Manor is more beautiful.
She had heard Darcy apologize early in the morning that Madame de Baul might not only be from Rosings, but would also have other guests, such as a priest.
"It can't be Mr. Collins, right?" A short man flashed in her mind, and the corners of her eyes twitched, God forbid, she actually wouldn't get along with such a person.
"And that's not all." Darcy spoke, "I'm going to introduce you and Charles to someone. β
Caroline was a little curious, she and Charles got out of the carriage, and saw another stopped carriage on the side, and a gentleman in his thirties got out of the carriage, he was neatly dressed, with a gentle expression, although he was not so handsome, but he had an aura peculiar to a mature man.
Darcy smiled at the visitor, and he walked over to him and said a few words, then turned to Caroline and Charles, and said, "This is my cousin, my uncle's son, Colonel Fitzwilliam." - This is my friend, Charles Bentley, and his sister Caroline Bentley. β
It was too rare for Darcy to call her a friend, and Colonel Fitzwilliam looked at the two in front of him curiously, and was stunned when he met a pair of gray-green eyes.
Darcy saw Caroline's unblinking eyes, his face was a little unpleasant, and he coughed lightly, "Miss Caroline, are you okay?" β
ββ¦β¦ Hello, Colonel! Nice to meet you! Caroline came back to her senses, startling the other party.
"Well, hello. I mean, I'm glad to meet you, Miss Bingley. - Hello, Mr. Bingley, I'm Fitzwilliam, and it's a great pleasure to meet you here, and you don't usually see Darcy's friends, but Easter is a magical holiday. With that, he blinked and smiled kindly at Charles.
"Hey! Darcy, you cousin is so humorous! Charles grinned, "Of course I'm honored!" Captain. β
Caroline shook her head, and when she turned around, she saw that Mr. Darcy was looking at her, and immediately stiffened, and she smiled dryly at him, but the other person's face was even darker.
- God, I didn't provoke you, sir?
Caroline was not at all surprised to see Elisabeth and the others in Madame de Baul's drawing-room, but they were very surprised, and Elisabeth's eyes widened - although they were large in their own right, Caroline smiled at her and curled the corners of her lips in greeting.
Madame de Catherine de Baul looked very graceful and luxurious, and it was evident from the way she dressed, sits, and even the way she spoke, that she was a very refined person, and that she had the common peculiarities of all ladiesβa desire for a good son-in-law, and an emphasis on her family. Caroline was secretly glad she had chosen the right gift, and that she hadn't listened to Mr. Darcy's advice, otherwise she would have suffered the wrath of a pseudo-mother-in-law, though it was likely that she had already tasted it.
Beside her, Mademoiselle Anne de Baul, on the contrary, looked very thin, pale, and occasionally covered her mouth and coughed twice, before attracting the attention of her mother, Madame Catherine, and being asked to return to her room.
Colonel Fitzwilliam's arrival seemed to be a surprise to everyone, but he was not at all nervous, unlike Sir Lucas's family, who seemed to be restrained to death.
He talked to Lady Catherine, about her garden, about her dress, and about the things they had done in the army, and he was very funny and humorous, and he stood out to the taciturn Mr. Darcy on the side.
But the most embarrassing thing was Caroline and Charles, who stood next to Darcy, and after the first meeting and greeting, Madame de Baul never paid attention to both of them, although they were friends of Darcy, but in the eyes of Madame de Baul, they came to demonstrate.
That's right, demonstrations. Don't think she didn't know the hint in Darcy's letter a few days ago, it was her future son-in-law, why was she simply sent away?!
Collins always had something to say, and he had a heated conversation with Colonel Fitzwilliam, and Elizabeth and Charlotte looked at each other, not knowing what to do, and turned their eyes to Caroline for helpβshe had not forgotten how Mr. Darcy had treated the young lady that day, and it was evident that he was courting her.
Elizabeth is not stupid, she can ask Mr. Darcy so much at this time, she must ask Miss Caroline at this time!
Moreover, in her mind, the impression of Mr. Darcy remained in Mr. Wickham's introduction, and although it was not annoying, her arrogance never made her like it.
But...... Her gaze moved to the side, and she saw the Mr. Charles Bingley, who she didn't want to give him a good look at all.
When she saw him and thought of her poor eldest sister, Jane's heart fell to Charles Bingley, but look at him, how he treated her sister!
Elizabeth bitterly told SΓΉ Jiying that they were not suitable, but she didn't listen, okay, okay, although she also instigated it at first, but all signs showed that Jiying and Mr. Bingley were clearly not up to par.
Forget it, this kind of thing can't be forced.
Elizabeth sighed, Mrs. Bennett's screams still seemed to echo in her ears, and she could always remember the pitiful way Jiying cried that night.
But she is much better now, and she will actively go out to have some fun, but Elizabeth knows that she needs the nourishment of love.
The best way to forget about someone is to commit to a new relationship.
It was getting late, and Madame de Baul seemed to have something else to do, and after Darcy and Colonel Fitzwilliam had said goodbye to her, they took Caroline and Bingley back to their lodgings.
Caroline was in a state of confusion, and she was sitting on the bed thinking about life when there was a knock on the door.
"Mr. Darcy?" She was surprised.
Darcy saw Caroline's round gray-green eyes, which seemed to have just finished bathing, - anti-theft w (although it was useless)
