Chapter 670: Safety First
Night shrouded the sky over New York, and the time gradually came to the early hours of the morning, the originally noisy Manhattan seemed much quieter, the crowded roads were significantly less trafficked, and the wide streets looked a little empty, only the street lights and neon on both sides of the road still reflected the lights of the whole Manhattan. It's the world's financial center, a veritable city that never sleeps, and one of the most popular locations for Hollywood movies.
However, there are quite a few difficulties to shoot on location here, especially when there are many people, and the occasional pedestrian who intrudes into the camera is enough to break down any crew and director.
So, after consulting with New York City authorities, Murphy took all of his filming in the late night and early hours of the morning, when there were fewer people, and the same was true for some of the daytime scenes in close-ups.
For close-up shots, it's not difficult to change the background of the night to the background of the day through color grading.
Several police cars whistled in red-green light, occupying two ends of the street, and then drove in one after another, including large trucks pulling containers, more than a dozen police cars, and SWAT special police cars provided by the New York police.
Immediately afterwards, some staff members got out of the car, a few with small gifts to persuade the few pedestrians on the street to leave, and more people began to busily set up the location under Murphy's command.
What will be filmed here will be several popular car chase scenes.
With the full support of the New York City government, the crew had plenty of time to temporarily close this block for filming, and although they were in the studio in the early stage, through models and green screens, a lot of related scenes were filmed, but some scenes still needed to be filmed on location.
Murphy methodically directs the entire crew, and from time to time he will visit the actors, and a large number of stuntmen will be used to shoot some thrilling scenes, and the safety measures must be in place.
No one wants to see an accident happen to the crew and actors.
In addition, several Chris Dane's superbikes, specially built by Mercedes-Benz, were also delivered, and the vehicles were divided into two parts, in addition to the normal use, there were also retrofit models specially designed to set up miniature cameras.
Except for the first-person view of Chris Dane's motorcycle, all the rest of the scenes here will be shot with IMAX cameras.
Murphy first came to the film crew, Philip Raschel was taking several assistants to adjust the IMAX camera set up on the camera car, because this big scene required strict control and scheduling, Murphy was not ready to shoot himself, but completely handed over the shooting task to Filip Raschel's film team.
While the crew was still setting up the venue, Murphy exchanged a few more words with Philip Raschel, and checked the IMAX camera again, the camera is arguably the most important equipment on the set, and the movie cannot be shot without the camera.
Of course, a great DP like Philip Raschel is just as important.
The director is responsible for the operation of the entire crew and the shooting of the film, and the senior creative under the director is the director of photography, who is responsible for coordinating the shooting of the complete film scene by the team, including the film crew.
In the entire film crew, the most important position is the director of photography, such as in Murphy's team, Fili-Raschel not only manages the camera crew, but also the lighting team, lighting assistants and set affairs, which are also under his jurisdiction.
Most of the time, Murphy communicates with Fili-Raschel before or during a shoot, telling his DP exactly what he wants the lens to look like, and then working together on other aspects such as choosing the right camera, lens, filters, composition, and lighting design.
In addition, Philip Raschel is not only the director of photography, but also the first driver of Murphy's team, responsible for controlling the main camera, in different situations, the first driver of the crew may be different, for example, Murphy sometimes shoots himself, but 99% of the time, the first driver of Hollywood is the director of photography within the crew.
A sober-minded person like Murphy knows very well that one person can't complete the shooting and production of a film at all, especially this kind of big-budget and big-budget action movie, and the key is to coordinate and give full play to the ability of the whole team.
Leaving the film crew, Murphy went to the place where the filming vehicle was parked, first circled around the police car, and then walked over to the big truck that the magician used to attack Chris Dane, and after just one look, he realized that something was wrong.
"Maltai, come here."
Calling the person in charge of the props team's vehicle, Murphy pointed to a line of letters on the outside of the truck's container and said, "Did you miss something?" ”
After taking a closer look, the man named Maltai quickly said, "I'm sorry, Murphy, I'll have someone paint it right away." ”
"As soon as possible," Murphy nodded slightly, and admonished, "you still have half an hour to go, don't delay the shooting." ”
With that, he walked towards the location of the director's monitor.
The props team didn't make a big mistake, they just forgot to paint a letter, but the meaning of the jargon on the outside of the truck container changed completely.
The phrase "Laughter.is.the.best.medicine" is "laughter is the best medicine", but this phrase does not fit the needs of this at all, and it is impossible for a person like a magician to endorse such a view.
So, in the original design, at the beginning of this sentence, Murphy had people add a striking "S" as red as blood, which is "Slaughter.is.the.best.medicine", so the meaning of the sentence changed to "Slaughter is the best medicine".
At Murphy's request, the "S" was painted on the side door of the container, where the magician would shoot during the shooting.
After the preparation, the shooting quickly began, although the speed of the vehicle was not actually fast, and more of the illusion of the vehicle driving at high speed was created by using the movement of the camera, the shooting was still divided into countless pieces, except for James Franco's magician, who was fastened to the truck container with a seat belt, and the rest were basically stuntmen.
Especially Chris Dane, who chased all the way on a motorcycle, there was not a single face-showing shot here, and Murphy didn't even think about putting Henry Cavill on the court.
And in his plan, on the cast list corresponding to the letters of the film, the names of the three stuntmen will be followed by the dark stuntman, because 90% of the scenes with masks are done by them.
Henry Cavill's name will only be placed behind Chris Dane.
Police cars, SWAT cars, bulletproof prisoner cars carrying prisoners, police cars, police cars, and a helicopter in the air appeared one after another, and shots of explosions and overturns also appeared during the shooting.
There wasn't much difficulty in these stunt scenes, but the speed of filming was not fast, and a lot of preparation took too much time, and a crash and rollover shot of a dozen seconds often took an hour or more to prepare.
The hot scene of such a big scene is a test for any director except Michael Bay.
Frankly speaking, it was the first time for Murphy to shoot such a hot car chase and a hot big scene on location.
In the past, there were many big scenes in his films, such as "Man of Steel" and "City of Chaos", but all the big scenes in these films were not filmed on location, but were generated based on computer CG technology, and the ratio of real shooting to CGI production in them can often reach a ratio of 2:8, or even more.
This time it's different, the big scene basically comes from the actual shooting, and then it is retouched by CG technology, and the ratio between the two is just reversed.
For example, "Dark City" is an action blockbuster that cannot be avoided, or the highlight is inevitably the car chase scene, just like Murphy's plan, it can capture the audience's nervousness, which is dangerous, but also allows the audience to have a bizarre pleasure, the rumbling sound of the car engine, and the sweaty palms, is the tension and excitement of the car chase scene.
As the first director to shoot such a hot scene on location, Murphy's first principle on the set is always safety!
Because safety can ensure the safety of the crew's actors, crew's photographers, crew's cars, crew's equipment and surrounding areas, avoid all kinds of annoying union organizations from coming to the door to find trouble, let the crew shoot smoothly, and let Murphy play freely.
Filming a car chase scene requires the director to have a tight control, good rehearsal and creative mind to choreograph a gripping car scene.
Every extreme problem encountered in filming, whether it is the overall shooting is a problem of details, the reason can be traced back to the imperfection of the pre-script and production level, considering this, the complexity of filming car scenes can be imagined, so a strict, refined, and already formed script in the mind is a very important problem.
Murphy has a well-developed plan in this regard, and he has never been the kind of fool who thinks that he can eat the film industry by pulling a random script and not even making a plan.
With a well-planned plan, the most that Murphy did on set was to control the shooting scene, that is, the overall environment, which not only applies to the car interior and the space around the camera.
For him to truly control the entire set of scenes, he needed to clearly define and lay out the entire environment, including all the areas that the camera would see as it moved, as well as the "buffer" space around the safe protection of the actors and crew from any unexpected car accidents, as well as the action.
Just as Murphy never let Henry Cavill drive that complicated superbike, the main characters in car chases use people with great car skills, and this reality is based on the use of professionals, including car stuntmen, to drive the car professionally!
Unless the car scene is a fixed car shot on a green screen, a professional must be invited to perform the complex car driving.
Since it could only be filmed at night, the action scenes here were filmed for a full week, and they also attracted the attention of a large number of media reporters.
