At the end of the same year, Sun Yun stepped down as Music Director and Principal Conductor of the Hong Kong Festival Orchestra and Guest Conductor of the Philadelphia Orchestra. Subsequently, after many negotiations, Sun Yun accepted the invitation of Shencheng Zhengfu and officially took over Chen Xieyang's position in the spring of the following year. He served as the music director and guest conductor of the Shencheng Symphony Orchestra for two years.

In the summer of 1990, Sun Yun's illness worsened and he was no longer able to work normally. After urgent consultations with Shencheng Zhengfu, Sun Yun resigned as music director of the Shencheng Symphony Orchestra. Considering that he might live in Shencheng in the future, Sun Yun accepted the appointment of the chief consultant of the Shencheng Symphony Orchestra, while retaining the position of guest conductor.

After many years of traveling around the world, especially the reforms that he had been thinking about in the application office for a year and a half, Sun Yun was physically and mentally exhausted. The disease of his right hand has become more and more severe year after year, and it has affected Sun Yun's command work.
