Chapter 5: Catching the Thief
It wasn't until Gao Daonian's figure disappeared around the corner that Xie Ning's master and servant returned to the small courtyard, but they found a sneaky figure by the window, peeking into the house.
"Ahem." Gu Sui is clever and deliberately makes strange noises to scare the other party.
The man turned around in panic and dropped something in his hand with a click.
Xie Ning looked at the slender and long-faced servant woman, frowned, and said, "Who are you?" Why are you here? β
The servant woman smiled, pointed to the food box on the ground, and replied, "Miss Cousin, this is a meal for you." In the future, you will be responsible for your three meals a day. β
Xie Ning said lightly: "Thank you." β
Hearing this, Ma Pozi's face immediately turned into a flower, "Cousin, look, I am a big food deliverer, do you also have to give some hard-earned money, so that I can add two dishes to drink?" β
Shainin glanced at her, turned around and motioned for Gu Sui to pick up the food box on the ground.
The master and servant have their own tacit understanding. Gu Sui opened the food box, exposed the pickles that had already cooled in it to Ma Pozi, and said contemptuously: "Just this little bit of cold rice, are you embarrassed to ask for a reward?" β
Regarding Ma Pozi's slackness, Xie Ning had already expected it. After all, she is not the serious master of the Hou Mansion, and Mrs. Hou looks at her unpleasantly, plus the scene she made in the Jade Courtyard today, it is ordinary for the people below to be unsatisfied.
But what puzzled Xie Ning was that Ma Pozi was embarrassed to ask her for a reward with such a meal?
"My cousin doesn't know that I am responsible for the food of the hundreds or so people in the Hou Mansion. Girl, you live on the side, so I'll come later. It's normal for meals to get colder. β
Looking at Xie Ning, Ma Pozi said again: "Cousin, can't you not give me a reward because of this little thing!" β
"Hehe," Xie Ning laughed noncommittally, with his own plans in his heart, "That's it, since you want to eat and drink, it's troublesome to give you a reward." Why don't you take this food box away? β
As soon as the words fell, Gu Sui held the food box and handed it to Ma Pozi with a smile.
"It's... That's embarrassing. Ma Pozi wiped her sweat, and said while retreating: "This meal, the cousin girl should keep it for herself." I won't bother the minions. β
"Miss, she's just gone?"
"I guess so." Xie Ning held his chin and thought about the reason why Ma Pozi ran away.
Could it be that he heard about his brilliant achievements in the Jade Academy? No, if that's the case, Ma Pozi shouldn't have provoked her in the first place.
After thinking for a long time to no avail, Xie Ning put aside this inconsequential trivial matter for the time being. The food in this food box is cold and rancid, and it is not enough for the two of them to fill their stomachs, but fortunately, there is some dry food in the luggage, which can be temporarily cushioned.
Xie Ning thought of Ma Pozi's words, the small courtyard was on the edge of the Hou Mansion, and now she and Gu Sui had an empty belly, and there was not much food around her, so she had an idea and decided to go out of the mansion immediately.
After confessing to Gu Sui, she walked out of the small courtyard, walked along the courtyard wall, and didn't go far before she touched the back door of the Hou Mansion.
There was no one guarding the door, but there was a lock across the latch. Encountering obstacles, Xie Ning was not discouraged, but listened to the movement on the street for a while, confirmed that no one was passing by, and then jumped forward, and when her toes landed again, she had already left the Hou Mansion.
Remembering the hungry ears of grain, Xie Ning suppressed the curiosity in his heart, did not stay long, and went straight to Fang Market as soon as he went out, and bought two drawers of steamed buns.
"Someone, catch a thief, come quickly!"
Xie Ning was about to return to the road, but there was a heart-rending cry in her ears, she searched around, her eyes stopped on the silver-haired old woman who was pushed to the ground, and then fixed the young man who was running away.
Without the slightest hesitation, Xie Ning moved like the wind, first helped up the embarrassed old woman, and then chased after her.
"There's a thief ahead, everyone come and help!"
Shainin chased the thief while calling for help. The thief was so cunning that she had been taken around several streets, but because she was unfamiliar with the terrain, she was often thrown away by him.
What made her even more depressed was that no one heard her shouts all the way to chase her, but no one stood up to help.
Thinking of the poor old woman who had her money bag stolen, Xie Ning gritted his teeth, no longer cared about the pedestrians on the road, and ran towards the thief on a rampage.
It seems that he felt Shaining's approach, and the other party was also trying his best to speed up, but under the physical overdraft, after all, he was not as fast as Shaining, who had practiced, and the distance between the two gradually narrowed. Just when Shainin was confident that he would be able to catch up with him immediately, the thief flashed sideways through the carriage passing by the roadside, blended into the crowd in an instant, and disappeared.
Shainin was full of chagrin when suddenly something flew over her shoulder from nowhere. Xie Ning subconsciously reached out to catch the delicate dark green lotus bag, looked up, and saw a poked head out of the window on the second floor of the restaurant next to him, which was an ordinary-looking man.
The other party waved his hand at her eagerly, and shouted loudly: "Girl, the person you chased has entered the teahouse opposite, and the person hasn't left yet!" β
Xie Ning was anxious for a while, and he didn't care about thanking him, so he immediately rushed over.
If she had been distracted a little, she might have noticed that the person who had kindly spoken out was the attendant who had spoken to them in the tea house during the day.
Above the restaurant, the man in white looked sideways, the half-open window beside him happened to block the view outside, and his gaze quietly followed the dark gray figure.
He saw the star-eyed girl rush into the teahouse across the street like a whirlwind, saw her chase to the open space in the backyard of the hall, saw her kick the man to the ground with a beautiful front kick, saw her quickly restrain the man, and somehow found a rope to tie his hands, saw her happily shake the lost and recovered money bag, saw her hold two drawers of buns in one hand, and dragged the rope that tied the thief in the other, and saw her escort the man over, and opened her mouth vividly with her eyebrows and eyes.
From a distance, he couldn't hear the voice clearly, but he could guess what she was talking about from the shape of her mouthβ"You little thief, you don't even let go of the old woman's money bag, but fortunately I caught it." Let's go, wait and go with me to see the official! β
With such an ordinary appearance and such ordinary clothes, she is obviously an inconspicuous girl, but she somehow touched his heartstrings.
He stared until the ink dust disappeared around the corner, and then he withdrew his gaze, but his mind involuntarily recalled the picture of Fang Cai, which made him smile knowingly.
"Ahem, it's really a tiger father without a dog girl. This Xie Yunzhong's daughter is not bad. β
Seeing that he coughed twice, the entourage standing beside him did not panic, but reminded him loudly: "There is no one around, the prince doesn't have to be like this." β
"Get used to it."
The man in white chuckled, but his voice was inexplicably mixed with a touch of desolation, which made people feel heavy when they heard it.
