"Daystar Pierces the Sky - Interview with Super Popular Cartoonist Pit Tsai"

Editor's note: In 1947, Japan's new manga kicked off with Osamu Tezuka's "New Treasure Island", and after more than 60 years of painstaking development, it has achieved the pinnacle of attention. Although Chinese comics started earlier, and a group of talented comic masters such as Feng Zikai, Ye Qianyu, Zhang Leping, Liao Bing and so on, but in the field of new comics, we have just started, the purpose of the founding of "Painting King" is not only to introduce the world's excellent comic works to readers across the country, but also to give domestic cartoonists a platform to show themselves, and to contribute to the growth of China's new comics. - How did the name "Pit Boy" come about?

Pit Boy: If I said that I made it up casually, would you believe it== Actually, I took this name because of my previous experience, hehe, but I still want to keep this secret for the time being, and I will tell you when I have the opportunity in the future.

- Why do you draw comics?

Kengzai: Of course, it was based on interest, but at the beginning, I was exposed to some domestic comic books, and I read all the comic books of the four famous novels, so I think it was during that period that I became interested in painting. Later, more and more Japanese comics entered the country, and a lot of Japanese animation was broadcast on TV, influenced by these anime works, I also became a die-hard anime fan, I read too many comics, and I inevitably had itchy hands, and once I couldn't help it, I found a drawing paper and tried to draw comics by myself, and after drawing, I looked at it and felt that it was okay, so I developed the habit of drawing comics every day.

- Do your parents support you in drawing comics?

Pit Boy: They don't support it, to be honest, until now I haven't told them about my submission to "Painting King", otherwise I will definitely stop drawing comics because I am not without responsibility, and the student's vocation is to study, so readers also hope that "Full-time Hunter" and "Next Stop Superstar" can be serialized, so I wish my parents not to be found drawing comics!

INTERVIEWER What do you think is the most important thing about drawing manga?

Pit Boy: Perseverance and talent, in my opinion, these two points are equally important, and they are indispensable. In fact, drawing manga is very hard, and as far as I know, it is common for professional manga artists in Japan to work all night, and in order to finish the drawing before the deadline, their editor will wait at the door of the manga house until the manuscript is delivered. Many cartoonists already suffer from spondylosis at a young age, so if you don't have enough perseverance, you can't become a professional cartoonist, of course, there must be a premise before this, that is, you need to have enough talent. In fact, the profession of cartoonist is very similar to that of some athletes, just like people like us who are very physically average, no matter how hard you work out the day after tomorrow, you can't participate in the Olympics. If you want to become a manga artist, you should have the talent of drawing and the talent of screenwriting, and of course, if you only think that you are good at drawing but not good at screenwriting, you can't become a successful manga artist. Just think about the Japanese cartoonist Tetsuo Hara, who we are familiar with, his screenwriting ability is actually very ordinary, but because he found a good partner Wu Lunzun to write the script, and the "Fist of the Big Dipper" drawn by him sold well all over the world and became a generation of hard-core comic masters. Therefore, those who feel that their screenwriting ability is not strong enough can try to find some people with strong screenwriting ability, and they will achieve good results.

INTERVIEWER Where do you usually get your inspiration from?

Pit Boy: Most of the inspiration comes from other anime works and film and television, such as "Full Time Hunter", which was created by hand after being inspired by "Yu Yu Hakusho", and "Next Stop Superstar" was influenced by "Glass Mask", I think to become a manga artist, it is not enough to just work behind closed doors, in my opinion, watching other works can not only be regarded as a mental relaxation, but also the best way for you to find materials to conceive the plot by yourself.

INTERVIEWER Did you encounter any difficulties?

Pit Tsai: I often feel that I don't have enough time, because I'm still a student, so I usually have limited time to draw comics, and I create it single-handedly, so sometimes I really wish one day could be used for two days. In addition, when I was painting "Next Stop Superstar", I often had a headache about the costumes of the characters, and I didn't want to be "Full-Time Hunter", so I could design some costumes by myself. For this reason, I have found a lot of fashion magazines to read, but now it seems that the effect is not bad, and the hard work has not been in vain.

- Do you have any interesting facts to share?

Pit Tsai: Well, not long ago, I saw that many students in the class bought "The King of Paintings" and said, "Wow, this issue of "Full-Time Hunter" and "Next Stop Superstar" is really wonderful. "I was very happy to hear it at the time, and as a manga artist, I am most happy that my work can be recognized by readers.

- Which of your favorite works do you like the most?

Pit Boy: "Full-Time Hunter" and "Next Stop Superstar" were almost the same works that I created, and they were serialized together in "The King of Paintings", and they are like my left and right hand to me, and it is really difficult to choose which one is my favorite.

Kengzai: For a long time, I will study and create at the same time, and when I finish my studies, I should become a professional cartoonist and contribute my own strength to the prosperity of Chinese comics.
