Chapter 5: One Shot to the End
"It's casual!" Jeff muttered quietly, the irony in his words that anyone could hear.
There was a surprisingly silent table at the table, on the one hand, everyone was worried about Jude's reaction when he got this sentence, and on the other hand, they had the same thoughts as Jeff. The script has already been written, and suddenly one of the characters is dispensable, so are the other characters also dispensable?
Unexpectedly, Jude just hugged his hands and shrugged his shoulders and said, "After reading the script, I believe you will not have any doubts." β
"What about the script?" Jeff glanced at Jude with some distrust, "Don't tell me, you lost them all on the way." β
Jude pulls a rollout of his trench coat pocket and throws it on the table, Jeff tries to reach for it, but Jude preemptively holds it down.
"Don't worry, I only bring a copy of the script, one by one for you to read, it is a waste of my time, but also a waste of your time, I have a proposal, I will first dictate to you a rough description of the film to be filmed, you decide whether to join, after which of course you can see the full script."
Jeff hesitated to look at the reactions of the people around him, and seeing that no one else objected, he took his hand back.
Jude sorted out his thoughts a little, introduced the plot of "This Man is from Earth" in the most concise language, and when he was done, he looked at everyone and said, "That's the story, now you can start deciding." β
Jeff held up his hand, "I have a question. β
"Please."
Jude didn't have any impatience on his face, and although Jeff had a tendency to go against him from the beginning, he was more confident that he could convince the other party.
"Did you really write this script? I'm sorry I'm not doubting your abilities, but from what you've just said, I can sense that this story involves at least six different disciplines, which requires a lot of knowledge to do. β
Jeff raised his doubts and kept his eyes on Jude to prevent him from lying.
"Although I didn't finish high school, it doesn't mean that I'm an idiot who doesn't know anything, in fact, I've been reading since I left school, but the media doesn't like to report on this, because it's too boring compared to nightclubs and pickling girls." Jude explained quietly.
"If all the news in the newspapers about you going to nightclubs and picking up girls is true, I wonder where you have so much time to read?" Jeff asked nonchalantly.
"That's a good question!" Jude glanced at Jeff meaningfully, "I used to be full of nightclubs and pickles, but you forgot that I was just in Los Angeles jail for more than three months, and there was no shortage of wine and girls!" β
Jeff was stunned when he heard this, his original intention was just to find out the truth about Jude's creation of this script, but he didn't expect to "force" Jude to tell him the past that embarrassed him.
"I'm sorry!"
Jeff's softness caused Jude to look at the others.
"Any questions?"
"I'm joining!"
Tony was the first to raise his hand.
Driven by him, Maggie, Petty, Loew and Han Lin all expressed their willingness to join the film, but Muller did not speak for a long time.
"Do you have any concerns, Mr. MΓΌller?"
Jude looked at the other with an inquiring gaze.
Mueller looked up, glanced hesitantly at Jude, and finally spoke.
"Mr. Locke, I must admit that your idea of this script is very interesting, but if it is just like what you just described, I don't think it makes a lot of sense to join it, I believe that not only me, but also everyone else here, everyone is willing to star in this movie for free with some personal purposes, some people want to really experience the feeling of making a movie once, some people want to be famous through it, and I want to improve my acting skills by participating in this movie, unfortunately this movie may not give me help in this regard."
Jude listened carefully to Mueller's words and did not refute them immediately, but chose to remain silent.
The few people who have just agreed to join the film are a little unsure when they see Jude's reaction, especially Petty, who is the person Mueller said hopes to gain greater popularity through this movie, and now it seems that things are not as she thinks.
"Director Locke, I wonder if you're sure you'll let it be released after this movie is finished?"
Jude shook his head and said honestly, "The chances of the movie being released are basically zero, and my goal is to release it on DVD." β
Although Petty was a little disappointed to hear this answer, to be honest, she didn't quite believe that a film with a production cost of less than $20,000 could be favored by theaters, and more than 80% of Hollywood's films that leave the factory every year could not be released, and could only meet the audience through the disc market, which was still within her acceptable range.
"Do anyone else have any questions?" Jude was sure that Petty would not quit, so he asked again.
Seeing that no one answered, Jude nodded, then turned his gaze to Mueller.
"I've been thinking about how to convince you just now, and to be honest, what you just said is right, this movie really doesn't require the actors to have superb acting skills, but from another point of view, if the movie really has such a demand, why don't I just go to the actors who have really had acting experience, and choose you?"
Mueller thought for a moment with a tense face, then shook his head slowly.
"I admit you're telling the truth, but that's not a good reason to convince me."
"So let me tell you, this movie will be shot in a very unique way, although the characters themselves don't require much from the actors, but this way of shooting will be a huge test for the actors, I wonder if you will change your mind?"
Jude's words not only intrigued MΓΌller, but even the others at the table looked at him curiously.
"In what way?" Mueller asked.
"One shot to the end!"
"What did you say?" Mueller was shocked and looked at Jude incredulously, "Are you sure you really want to do this?" β
Loew couldn't help but interject: "Wait a minute, who can tell me, what is a shot in the end?" β
Maggie, Petty, and Han Lin all had similar doubts, but they were too embarrassed to ask for their own reasons, and Loew's recklessness helped them instead.
"To put it simply, the film is completed by one shot, and there is no editing in the later stage, and the shot is directly the finished film."
Jude's explanation was very brief, but unfortunately everyone still didn't understand it too much
Muller followed up with an analogy: "For actors, the way of shooting in one shot to the end is actually similar to acting in a stage play, except that there is an extra camera next to it, and everyone has to devote themselves to the role, without pausing in the middle, and acting out the whole play in one go." β
"That means we have to memorize all the lines of our characters and not make any mistakes?" Jeff was the first to ask, and he had now fully figured out what it meant.
Everyone else had embarrassed looks on their faces, especially Petty, who was the worst at memorizing lines.
Mueller nodded, smiled wryly and said: "The point is that it is useless for you to remember your lines, everyone must remember your lines, because as long as one person makes a mistake, the whole shooting will be lost." β
"It's a tough challenge." Maggie said with a frown.
"It's like this for actors, but the biggest difficulty is still on the director." Mueller's gaze slowly moved to Jude's face, and he said with a burning gaze: "I admit that this idea of yours really touched me, but are you sure you can control this way of shooting?" β
Jude shrugged and smiled, "How do you know if you don't try?" β
