Chapter 2 Funeral
The breeze gently laps the sea against New Bay Beach, and the blue water is in pleasing harmony with the white beach in the sun. The beautiful and quiet Irvine campus on the seaside hillside of Orange County has turned this harmony between the sea and the sky into a perfect painting of nature.
An upscale residential area adjacent to the University of California, Irvine, seems to be marked with harmony, with manicured lawns and winding gravel roads separating detached villas. The exquisite villa complex highlights the prestige, and the tranquil environment sets off the owner's taste.
Dozens of cars parked in front of a single-family villa on a corner of the residential area, and men in black suits and women in black skirts add to the seclusion. People whispered in the warm breeze, and they all seemed to be looking forward to it.
Everything in front of this villa foreshadows the funeral ceremony here. It also shows the nobility of the identity of the deceased.
The living room, which had become somewhat dark because the black sheer curtains blocked the dazzling sunlight, was also crowded with whisperers, and the otherwise spacious living room was crowded because of these guests. This crowding also adds to the increasingly obvious agitation and dissatisfaction of these guests.
Finally, a few guests gathered around an old man with gray hair sitting on the sofa by the window with his eyes closed. "Cheng Lao. Isn't it time for a funeral? It's not a problem to wait like this. Chairman Xia's funeral time came early. Not only people from our company came, but many friends from all walks of life arrived. You know, Americans have a strong sense of time, and they ...... "a middle-aged man leans over the old man and whispers softly." He said a lot, but was clever enough to shut his mouth in time. The effect of point-and-click is achieved.
Cheng Mengqiu reluctantly opened her eyes. He propped himself up and glanced around. In the midst of this expectation, the fierceness in his eyes flashed. He clearly took in the obvious impatience of those around him. "I'm old, I'm useless, and I'll fall asleep after a while." Cheng Mengqiu returned to his old state in an instant, and his muttering chatter well concealed his displeasure.
"What time is it?" Cheng Mengqiu half-squinted.
"Cheng Lao. It's eleven o'clock," a middle-aged man who looked like a butler who had been standing on the side replied in time.
"What about Kevin? He hasn't come out yet? Called him? Cheng Mengqiu still didn't raise her eyelids.
"Go in a few times. The young master did not react. The butler replied respectfully.
Cheng Mengqiu frowned slightly. He opened his eyes and glanced in the direction of the bedroom upstairs.
Looking around again, Cheng Mengqiu groaned for a while.
"This kid, it's too sudden, let's take care of it, he's a child after all. I'll call him, and you can get ready. By the way, the curtains were pulled back a bit, and we old fellows felt like we were about to see God. Hehe. Cheng Mengqiu smiled at the end.
As Cheng Mengqiu slowly walked up the stairs, as the sunlight poured into the living room, the guests' emotions suddenly brightened.
Cheng Mengqiu pushed open the bedroom door, and a musty smell penetrated his heart. He frowned, trying not to pinch the wings of his nose. Because the thick curtains block out the sunlight, only the light of a table lamp makes the view in the bedroom very dark. Cheng Mengqiu paused, he tried his best to keep his eyes open, so that his presbyopia could adapt to this place more quickly.
Seeing clearly the handsome young man holding the hand of the middle-aged woman on the side of the **, Cheng Mengqiu's heart twitched. He really didn't want to break the warm atmosphere. But the miserable whiteness of the woman's face without a trace of blood reminded herself that she must be ruthless to divide the relationship between the two worlds.
"Kid......" Cheng Mengqiu pondered his words while caressing the young man's thick black hair. Your mom is gone. She went to another world. What you have to do now is not to linger here, you should send her away with dignity like a man, and then inherit her career and do her unfinished business well. Get up and go out and tell everyone that you are your mother's pride. Cheng Mengqiu finally grabbed the young man's shoulders hard.
The young man slowly raised his head, his red eyes full of earnestness. There are still undried tears in the corners of his eyes.
"Uncle Cheng, tell me what's going on? How could my mother suddenly have a heart attack. How there is no warning at all beforehand. Mom is only forty-five, and a woman of this age should not have this disease. You should know, you're her uncle, you must know. Tell me. The young man excitedly grabbed Cheng Mengqiu's arms.
Cheng Mengqiu twitched the corners of her mouth a few times in pain.
"Let go of me, you want to break up my old bones? I'm not the rugby ball in your hand......" Cheng Mengqiu frowned and stared at the young man.
The young man suddenly woke up from his ignorance, and he embarrassedly squeezed out a trace of apologetic smile.
"I can't tell you the answer you are going to get, but John will tell you. He's Fu'er's lawyer, and he has Fu'er's will, and maybe Fu'er has something to tell you. Cheng Mengqiu shrugged her shoulders and expressed her attitude.
"Yes, I'll go to John. I want to read the will. The young man turned around and started to leave in a hurry.
"Come back" Cheng Mengqiu broke off his drink, making the young man's movements freeze.
"This is the etiquette you've learned over the years? With so many people outside, you can do your own business, and leave your mother's funeral to ask for a will. You can't bear to see your mother unable to settle down? What are you going to tell everyone? Tell them you care about your property? Tell them that your mother's death is not worth mentioning? Tell them that you, as a U.S. citizen, don't know the most basic etiquette of punctuality? I remind you that John will only announce his will after the funeral, will give you all the documents that your mother has kept with him. Don't insult John's work ethic. If you want to know everything sooner, hurry up and let the funeral end. Sober up, boy. Cheng Mengqiu finished what he wanted to say in one breath, as if he was afraid that this reckless kid would do something stupid if he didn't listen. Because of the rapidity of his voice, he finally gasped for breath.
"Yes, thank you, Uncle Cheng. We immediately began the funeral. The young man instantly regained his life, he rushed to the bedroom door, took a deep breath, and wiped the tears from the corners of his eyes. Then he opened the door with determination.
Sunlight poured into the bedroom. The breath of life suddenly poured into the otherwise lifeless room. The female body lying quietly on it also seemed no longer so stiff and cold. The sun cast a faint glow on her face.
Cheng Mengqiu didn't leave the room, he stood in front of the ** and looked at the deceased lady.
"Xiaofu, child, you left like this? Since you've been here, I haven't seen a single day you're truly happy. Maybe it's my fault, I shouldn't have helped you get here, I'm sorry for you, and I'm sorry for your parents. Although the days when we went out to sea to fish together were hard, we were happy. I thought you were a happy little girl too, but I was wrong, have you been punishing yourself? I can't help you get rid of the past, I'm guilty. Child, be happy in heaven and leave everything in your past life, God bless you, our child......"
Cheng Mengqiu raised his trembling hand and gently stroked the face of the deceased, his cloudy eyes filled with crystal tears.
