Chapter 144: Testing

On Billy Olson's Facebook page, Michael Newman found his contact details and was sure that the call wasn't a trick tricked by his goofy friends. The Boston metropolitan area is not far from the town of Cambridge, where Harvard is located, and Michael Newman took a taxi the next day.

Michael Newman was a first-time student at Harvard, and it might have been difficult to find a dormitory in a school that was connected to town, but the Kirkland dormitory was an exception. First Mark Zuckerberg, followed by Lin Mingyang, two major figures made the Kirkland dormitory the most talked about dormitory building at Harvard.

Standing in the dimly lit aisle, Michael Newman stared at the door number marked H33 to make sure that he was not looking for the wrong place, so he knocked on the door, but after a long time, there was no response inside.

Michael Newman knocked again, and the result was still the same, and then he remembered the code that was definitely a bit silly to shout, and with the mentality of giving it a try, he knocked on the door for the third time, and shouted at the top of his voice: "I'm a fool!" ”

As soon as he finished speaking, the door opened like a ghost, and then a head stuck out from behind the open door, and Michael Newman was startled. He recognized it as Billy Olsen, and then patted himself on the chest, "Thank God, why did you jump out all of a sudden, I thought I saw the hell in broad daylight!" ”

Billy Olsen tilted his head into the room, "You knocked on the door three times before you remembered to say the code, and your brain was slow enough, come in, everyone is waiting for you in the house!" ”

Leading Michael Newman into the room, Billy Olsen first pointed to Lin Mingyang, who was sitting on the side of the sofa, "He doesn't need me to introduce more, right?" ”

Michael Newman nodded, he wanted to go up and shake hands with Lin Mingyang at this time, but was stopped by Billy Olsen, he turned his hand pointing at Lin Mingyang to the right, "Don't worry, there is another one over there, his special adviser to the crew of "Three Fools", and he is also one of the judges. ”

Greene Nat nodded at him mechanically, with a hollow expression, and honestly Michael Newman wasn't his type of person. As an interviewer, Michael Newman would have been devastated if he had known that the judges' first impression of him was so bad. But if he knew about Greene Natt's "gay plot", he would probably rejoice about it.

Billy Olsen invited Michael Newman to sit on the other side of the couch, and he himself sat on Lin Mingyang's left-hand side.

Flipping through the roster, Billy Olson asked in a thoughtful manner: "Auditioner No. 26, Michael Newman?" ”

Hearing that he had already had 25 auditions, Michael Newman was nervous, he straightened his waist, and his expression was no longer as casual as before. The fact that there is no interviewer at all but him is a trick that Billy Olsen has come up with, and even the numbers are made up by him.

Seeing that the trick he came up with was working, Billy Olsen secretly rejoiced in his heart, and then he went on to ask a few questions such as "Do you have a girlfriend?" "Do you have a history of drug abuse? This lack of nutrition left Michael Newman confused.

Greene Nut's question was very direct, asking Michael Newman if he had read the novel "Five Point Man", Michael Newman shook his head honestly, and Greene Nutter did not follow the question.

As soon as Lin Mingyang came up, he asked Michael Newman if he would be nervous in front of the camera, and Michael Newman told him that he and a few friends often shoot some interesting short films, to be precise, this is not a real acting experience, but Lin Mingyang still nodded, and carried a camera from behind the sofa like magic and put it on his shoulder.

"Then you have an impromptu performance, you're a freshman now, you've been assigned to our dorm, how do you greet us when you knock on the door and come in. I'll be in charge of the shooting, and then Olsen and Nat will go along with your performance. ”

Michael Newman thought about it for a few moments, then nodded, stood at the door of the living room, and signaled that he was ready. Lin Mingyang set up the camera and made an OK gesture towards Newman.

As soon as he entered the shooting state, Michael Newman's face immediately changed to a curious look, and he did not rush to greet the others after entering the living room, but looked up and down, left and right, and then muttered: "This house is really broken!" ”

"If you don't like it, you can go out and stay in a hotel!" Green-Nat snorted coldly in his nostrils, and although it was only an audition performance, he was also very dedicated.

"But I don't have that much money!" Michael Newman spread his hands very rugly, "At least not yet, hello, my name is Michael Newman!" ”

"If I were you, I would never shake that guy's hand!" Billy Olsen put down the magazine in his hand and said with a wicked grin.

"You're Billy Olsen?" Michael Newman blinked, pretending to be surprised and looked at him, "I've heard a lot about you, and your homepage has the highest number of hits on the Harvard online community. I didn't expect that we were in the same dormitory, and I left you a message, have you forgotten? ”

"I usually only reply to messages from beautiful women!" Billy Olson posed what he thought was cool, "If you don't already have a girlfriend, I can introduce you to one!" ”

"Stop!" Lin Mingyang put down the camera, he felt that it was already possible to shoot here.

"How's my performance?" The first person to ask was Billy Olson.

"General!" Lin Mingyang's cold answer seriously hit his self-confidence, and then Billy Olson pointed at Michael Newman, "What about him?" ”

"Not bad!" Lin Mingyang nodded, and he extended his right hand to Michael Newman in a friendly manner: "Welcome to join us!" ”

Michael Newman felt like he was in a dream, and he didn't have any nervousness in front of the camera, and his fingers actually trembled with excitement. "So I passed?"

Lin Mingyang smiled and nodded: "As you wish!" ”

――――After it was determined that Michael Newman would play the protagonist Lancher, among the three fools, only Lazu, who had a poor family, was left, and the role candidate had not yet been decided. In the novel "Five Point Man", Lazu is a young man who dreams of becoming an engineer, but has no self-confidence and is superstitious about gods and Buddhas. His family is very poor, his father was a postmaster who is now paralyzed at home, his mother is an extremely nagging Obasan, and his sister has become a leftover daughter because she has no dowry. Later, he experienced a suicide awakening life, and finally succeeded in the interview before graduation.

This role, Lin Mingyang originally planned to find a black man to play the role, but then he suddenly changed his mind. In the novel "Five Point Man", I want to use the role of Razu to reflect the reality of the serious gap between the rich and the poor in India. In order to make the adapted script closer to the reality of American society, Lin Mingyang positioned the role of Razu as the descendants of Mexican smuggled immigrants.

Mexican smugglers have always been a major problem in American society, and although the United States has set up various checkpoints on the border and used unmanned reconnaissance aircraft to patrol back and forth along the long border, it still cannot stop the steady flow of smugglers to the United States. Every year, more than 10,000 people in Mexico infiltrate the United States by various means.

In the U.S., even though they live at the bottom and do the coolest and most tiring jobs, they get paid more than they do in Mexico, and then they save money and send that money back to Mexico to support their loved ones.

In Lin Mingyang's screenplay, Razu's parents are Mexican, and they successfully infiltrated the United States before Razu was born, met and gave birth to Lazu. According to the laws of the United States at that time, you could acquire U.S. citizenship by being born on U.S. soil. Razu was born American, but his parents were still Mexican, and because they didn't have a hukou, they were eventually discovered by immigration and both were deported home.

With the support of a local charity, Razu was successfully admitted to the North Harmon Institute of Technology. His greatest wish is to win social status through his own efforts and bring his parents to the United States to live together.

The same role to reflect social reality, because of the difference in overall living standards, the gap between rich and poor in the United States is not as severe as in India. At first, Lin Mingyang was limited to the idea of the novel, so he considered positioning Lazu as a black man living at the bottom of the United States. But considering that there are many films that focus on the survival of black people at the bottom, in addition to the gap between the rich and the poor, there are other problems in American society, and the living conditions of marginalized people are more worthy of attention.

And Billy Olson's Fahan has been a photographer since he was a child in the original book, but he was forced to go to engineering school under pressure from his family, and has always been Lancher's loyal friend, he went to the dean's office with Rancho to steal the roll for Lazu, and finally gave up the opportunity to interview with his father to show his ideals, which was recognized by his father, and finally became a famous animal photographer.

Obviously, the author's background in the original novel is set as the middle class in India, but when it comes to interfering in their children's growth choices, American parents do not have the same strong mentality as Indian parents who want their children to become Jackie Chan. If this character is transplanted into the script, it is obviously not appropriate.

In the process of reshaping the story of the novel in the script, Lin Mingyang set the family background of Fahan as the wealthy class in the United States. His father opened a company and wanted Fahanzi to follow in his father's business. Although Fa Hanzhi is not here, his father used his living expenses as a threat to force him to choose a subject he didn't like.

The most troublesome thing for Lin Mingyang is the setting of the protagonist Lancher, the poor boy impersonating the master's son to go to college will not work at all in American society.

Lin Mingyang really encountered a problem this time, he was thinking and thinking about it every day. His mind runs fast, his mind is chaotic. Then they all gather in one place, tangled together, and cannot be unraveled. The more he tried to solve it, the more he couldn't solve it. The more I thought about it, the more chaotic my heart became, and my mind seemed to have been stuffed into a stone, and I couldn't figure out my thoughts.
