Zhao Mengfu has a lot of handwriting, and his representative works include "Thousand Character Text", "Luo Shen Fu", "Words of Return", "Thirteen Treks of Lanting" and so on. He is the author of 12 volumes of "Notes on Shangshu" and "Songxuezhai Anthology". Relatively speaking, there are only a few paintings handed down, such as "Self-Portrait", "Strange Stone and Clear Bamboo", "Bamboo and Stone", and "Dead Wood and Bamboo and Stone".
The work in front of me is on silk, ink pen, 100 centimeters in length and about 50 centimeters in width. The picture is composed of two dead trees, a mountain rock, and several clumps of green bamboo. Among them, green bamboo grows from two directions under the stone, with a natural form and vitality. The author only used a few brushes, and the tenacious and hard-working spirit of green bamboo jumped on the paper, which formed a sharp contrast with the dead wood behind the stone.
On the left side of the scroll, the signature "Song Xue Weng" is three words. In the upper left corner, "Zhao Ziang's" and "Songxuezhai" are printed on two sides.
Zhao Mengfu painted dead wood, bamboo and stone, on the basis of inheriting Wentong and Su Shi, the brush of calligraphy was integrated into the painting, he advocated "calligraphy and painting of the same origin", that is, the book into the painting, its well-known ancient and modern painting famous poem "Stone such as flying white wood such as a tree, writing bamboo is also in the eight laws." This picture embodies this theory, using the "flying white" of calligraphy to write stones and dead tree trunks, the chapter is concise, the brushwork is vigorous and free, revealing the strength. Bamboo with a smooth tone, with the word "individual" or "jie", stroke by stroke, both powerful and subtle, rich in pen and ink taste, embodies the elegant charm of literati painters.
