Chapter 320: The Ruins of St. Paul's

With a population of 610,000 and only 32.8 square kilometers, Macao has no rivers and mountains, and no forests and wilderness, so its natural tourism resources are seriously insufficient. However, Macau has successfully transformed from a manufacturing economy dominated by the textile industry to a service economy dominated by tourism, and tourism has become the most important industry in Macau.

In addition to the important reason why the gambling industry attracts a large number of tourists to Macau, this is inseparable from the efforts of the Macao people themselves. In addition, more than 400 years of history of the intersection of Chinese and Western cultures in Macao have left many places of interest and historical sites, creating a unique culture and customs, including antique traditional temples, solemn churches, many historical and cultural heritages, and beautiful seaside scenery along the coast.

According to relevant surveys, there are more than 40,000 immigrants in Macao every day.

"I didn't bring you here last time, make up for it this time!"

After shopping on a large scale, Erya still did her best as a landlord and took Ye Zhengzheng for sightseeing. Erya seemed very positive and took Ye Zheng to the Ruins of St. Paul's, one of the eight scenic spots in Macau.

The Ruins of St. Paul's, whose official name is the ruins of St. Paul's Cathedral, are generally known as St. Paul's or the Archway. It is the site of the front wall of the Church of the Mother of God in Macau, which belongs to the landmark building of Macau.

It is about 27 meters high and 23.5 meters wide, with five floors, and is an Italian Renaissance "Baroque" style building.

Baroque, that is, bizarre, also known as "misshapen pearls". This anti-classical, deviant style of architecture was popular in Europe in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. It is characterized by fine carving and a strong sense of three-dimensionality; Rich in imagination and heavily religious; Unconventional, with ornate decorative arts; In particular, the pursuit of dynamism with curved surfaces and curves has outstanding free-spirited feelings.

There is also a baroque art archway in Nanjing, China. It is located in the gate archway of the Jiangnan Water Master School in Rujiang Gate, was built in the sixteenth year of Guangxu in the Qing Dynasty, is about 10 meters high, brick and concrete structure, fan-shaped to both sides of the spread, the arc-shaped façade is evenly distributed with 10 square decorative columns. The central pillar is slightly higher, and the two sides are divided, and the momentum is magnificent. At the top of the archway, there are five layers of retreats on both sides obliquely, which are decorated with dynamic swirl ornaments.

There is a pair of stone beasts in front of the archway, named Xuanyi, the appearance is Xuanang, it is the mount of the Buddha Manjushri Bodhisattva, there is the general office admiral building and the British teacher office building behind the archway.

"I think you want to come!" Ye Zheng stood in front of the steps. Turning her head to look at the woman full of pride.

Hearing this, Erya showed a perfect smile on her face and said, "You're quite smart!" ”

"I've actually been here! This looks quite flavorful in the front, but the back is really ruined! Ye Zhengzheng looked up at the carved archway on the stone steps, and swept the bustling crowd rushing upward, and didn't understand what was so good about it.

When Ye Zhengzheng was studying, Gu Jiao would often take Ye Zhengzheng out for travel. And the first time I came to Macau, I was brought here. It's just that Ye Zheng is not interested in historical relics. He prefers complete landmarks.

"Ruined walls? I...... I really want to hit you! When Erya heard him slander like this, she suddenly felt a violent tendency.

"I'm telling the truth!" Ye Zhengzheng didn't mean to admit his mistake, and followed her up the steps.

Although this is said to be an archway, it is actually a product of coincidence, and the essence is a relatively complete front wall.

More than 400 years ago, the Portuguese invaded Macau. At the same time, Catholicism was brought to Macau.

In 1562, the Portuguese built St. Paul's Church in Macao over several years, and then spread the religion to the people of Macao, who did not believe in religion. Later, the church was destroyed by fire twice.

Year 1602. St. Paul's Church was rebuilt again and completed in 1637 after 35 years.

In 1835, a fire destroyed the church again, leaving only the front wall costing 30,000 taels of silver, which became today's Ruins of St. Paul's.

After St. Paul's Church became a ruin, it was called an archway because the front wall was similar to the traditional Chinese memorial arch. Because there were two St. Paul's churches in the local area at that time, one large and one small, and the Portuguese pronunciation of "St. Paul's" was close to the Cantonese "Samba", so the big one was called "St. Paul's".

In fact, in addition to the front wall, the 68 stone steps in front of the church are also historical relics, as if intact preservation.

……

Erya obviously liked it very much, standing on the steps, spreading her hands, and for the first time took the initiative to let Ye Zhengzheng help her take pictures.

Click!

Ye Zheng adjusted the camera and helped him capture a very good picture, including the three statues of the archway.

The front wall of this church is a combination of European Baroque architecture and Chinese culture and art, and the carvings are exquisite and magnificent. It is worth mentioning that the three carvings have non-traditional Catholic content, but rather stories of Chinese Buddhism.

Among them, three statues are engraved with Chinese character diagrams: "Ghosts are tempting people to be evil", "The dead are not guilty", and "Our Lady steps on the dragon's head". For example, "Remembering the Dead Do No Sin", which is a relief of a skeleton lying with its head facing to the left, the words are intended to warn that people should have the virtue of forgiveness for their dead kind, and that even the guilty should be given a proper home.

Obviously, China has slowly moved away from Buddhism, and some things have been abandoned. This tomb, which often exceeds 100,000 yuan, is a typical example, even for the innocent, it is difficult to find a suitable home.

When Erya was looking for someone to take pictures of the two of them, Ye Zhengzheng's mobile phone rang inappropriately, especially when he saw the name of the caller ID, which made him a little embarrassed. Erya seemed to guess that it was Zuo Chuchu, and glared at him dissatisfied.

In the end, Ye Zhengzheng chose to hang up the phone first and followed Erya to complete the group photo.

"Let's take it!"

Erya took back the mobile phone from the man's hand, heard Ye Zhengzheng's mobile phone ring again, and said lightly. She naturally knew about Ye Zhengzheng and Zuo Chuchu, but when the facts were put in front of her, there was still something unpleasant.

To Ye Zhengzheng's surprise, this time it was not Zuo Chuchu who called, but an unfamiliar number in Hong Kong, and the number was still very coherent.

"Tiger girl?" Ye Zhengzheng never thought that it was Hu Niu who used this strange number to call him.

"Brother Politics, I'll tell you!" The voice of the tiger girl came from there, and she looked very serious.

"What's wrong?" Ye Zheng asked curiously.

"Aunt and uncle are in Macau!" Tiger Girl deliberately lengthens her tone to show that she is not lying.

"How do you know?" Ye Zhengzheng was slightly puzzled, after all, Zuo Chuchu had no contact with his mother, and it stands to reason that Hu Niu would not know about this kind of news.

"What Grandpa Ye said! I came to his house to play, and he told me! Tiger Niu said again.

"Grandpa Ye?" Ye Zhengzheng seems to have captured something.

"I woke up and couldn't see Sister Chu Chu, so I went to Grandpa Ye's house next door to play, I listened to him!" Tiger Girl simply told what happened.
