Chapter 10: The Empty City
86_86324The city is silent, and occasionally there are a few dog barks, but I didn't expect the pet dogs in the city to survive so strongly. It seems to have been raining for several days, and the road has been flooded. I looked at my watch, and sure enough, my previous estimate was wrong, and now it was five o'clock, and the already gloomy sky had become a little darker, and the place where we were at present was still some distance from my house.
Empty city, absolutely empty city. Except for the stench of the corpses, there was no human smell. It seems that even if you return home, you won't find any surprises. I wasn't embarrassed to mention this idea to Duan Ke, after all, I insisted on coming. However, the two of us should have known in our hearts that this was the result.
Duan Lili was on a pickup truck on the sidewalk, waved at me and said, "I can't go any more today." β
I looked at her pale face and realized that we had been walking in the rain all afternoon, and we would definitely have to get out of the problem if we left. I unscrewed a bottle of mineral water and handed it to her, saying, "Okay, if you say stop, let's stop." β
Duan Kebai glanced at me, snatched the mineral water from my hand with all his might, and said angrily: "Now you have a conscience to find out?" Have you ever considered that I am a weak woman? β
"I thought you had been exercising for more than ten days after me." I said, handing her the cap as well. Duan Ke didn't speak, didn't pay attention to the bottle cap in my hand, and stared at me with slanted eyes while drinking water, I couldn't bear to guess what she was thinking.
"Okay, Miss, let's pick a place to settle down tonight." I withdrew my outstretched hand and said helplessly. We are already in the city, the streets are lined with buildings, and the streets used to be full of shops, and although most of them have roller shutters, we still have a lot of options. There was a store in the back that was still open, and I walked over and found it was a clothing store. I knocked on the window glass, turned to Duan Ke and said, "Why don't you just live here and get some clothes to wear by the way?" β
Duan Ke walked over, looked at it for a while, and then shook his head. "No, no, absolutely not, you look at those models, how horrible they are at night." She said timidly, and raised her hand to point in a direction, "And, look there." β
I followed her gesture and looked, and sure enough, there were two people lying on their stomachs in front of the cash register in the clothing store. To be precise, judging by their decaying Cheng dΓΉ, it should be two dead people. I looked at the mannequins used to display the costumes inside, with rudimentary paint on their faces, pestled in the corner of the clothing store. On weekdays, I don't realize that it's really a bit crazy to be said by Duan Ke. At this time, several models in the store were facing me, and their expressions were eerie, as if they would come to life if they looked at them more. I didn't dare to continue imagining, so I quickly turned around and said to Duan Ke: "Then let's go, there should be something ahead."
Faced with the empty and dead streets, I struggled to search my brain for some valuable memories, such as the fact that so-and-so was only fifty paces away from us, but found nothing. As we walked along the street-side shops, there was a row of shutters that used to be locked, and even if they were open, most of them were filled with unsightly dead people. Duan Ke said that her nose was blocked, and she kept sniffing. I said it was God's reward for you, and the smell was blocked out of your nose.
The rain began to fall again, and the sky became darker. We turned the corner and came to an intersection.
Duan Ke and I had to hide under the canopy of a grocery store to avoid the rain, looking at the dark sky and not knowing what to do. Looking at the street in front of me, I remembered that when I was in junior high school, my dad used to work in the neighborhood and used to come here. After the evening self-study, my dad would pick me up in the company's car and wait for him to get off work. While I was waiting, I liked to wander around the neighborhood, where there were a lot of factories, and every day I would come across the point where the workers would leave work, and many people would rush out of the factories. So my impression of this place is that there are so many people.
But who knows, a few years later, I will be faced with a street without voices.
"Do you want to stay in the supermarket?" Duan Ke asked me in a thick nasal voice, and she pinched her nose, "There seems to be a family in front." β
I followed her gaze and saw that there was indeed a supermarket sign about three or four hundred meters in front of us. I don't have any memories of this supermarket, probably I only took it after I went to college. I instantly enumerated in my mind the benefits that the supermarket could bring us, and without hesitation, I took a step forward, so excited that I forgot to answer her.
Almost all the cars in the city are squeezed into the highway, so the road is now quite wide, with only scattered cars parked on the side of the road. I simply took Duan Ke over the guardrail and stepped into the middle of the road. The rain fell steadily and did not get any heavier. Except for the sound of our footsteps, the sound of raindrops hitting the road. Naturally, the street lights were not turned on, and everything on both sides of the street was hidden in the darkness under the street trees. Without the assistance of artificial light, the situation of the shop is basically impossible to see. I thought of the models in the clothing store before, with wooden expressions, and perhaps they were standing under the street trees, looking with empty eyes at the two living people who broke into the road.
My scalp tingled with fear from my own imagination and I subconsciously quickened my pace.
When we reached the door of the supermarket, we were greeted by several cold roller shutters. I crouched down and pulled, and sure enough, I was locked. Duan Ke kicked the door angrily, and an extremely discordant sound sounded in an instant. I quickly grabbed her, there must be a way, I said.
"I don't believe you can crack it with a hammer." Duan Ke replied without looking at it, and then sat down on the ground rudely against the roller shutter door, and there was another piercing crash. I took a few steps back, taking in the dim light of the buildings around me.
From the few signboards hanging on the building, I immediately concluded that the building in front of me was a large commercial building. And this supermarket is connected to the shopping mall. This kind of shopping place is usually equipped with an underground car park, and it may be feasible to enter the supermarket from the parking lot. In addition, if you can't get in from the parking lot, you can barely get through the night by finding a car inside, after all, the air inside will smell much better than outside.
I told Duan Ke my idea, and I took her around the building and started looking for the entrance to the parking lot. It was already completely dark and I had to turn on my flashlight. When a lot of things are illuminated by a flashlight, it feels different. The normal promotional posters and shop signs on weekdays look a little weird in the light of the flashlight. I try not to think, not to think about the things around me, and just pray not to touch things in human form. Perhaps it was because during the government's disease prevention period, few people still had the leisure to go out shopping, the roads around the mall were very clean, and there were no dead people or anything that challenged our nerves. After a few minutes of trotting all the way, we finally stepped on the downward-sloping concrete pavement.
I poked inside with my flashlight, and the toll booth was empty, and the railing used to stop incoming and outgoing vehicles had been broken and staggered next to the speed bump. Inside, it's frighteningly dark.
Duan Ke hid behind me, pushed my backpack, and motioned for me to hurry in, and to go ahead. I exhaled, and said that I could not lose such face in front of girls, so I took a big step. As I walked over the speed bumps, the rain outside was blocked, but from time to time the wind blew in and blew on our backs, and I couldn't help but shiver.
The surroundings were as dark as paint, and the light from the flashlight was scattered, so it couldn't illuminate anything, and even the echo from the footsteps seemed to be sucked into the parking lot. I felt like I was being swallowed up by darkness. Fortunately, Duan Ke grabbed my arm tightly, and this feeling was only a matter of an instant.
Rounding a bend, the road beneath your feet becomes gentle. The echo from the footsteps is smaller, and the temperature inside is much lower. I immediately realized that the idea of "sleeping in the parking lot if you can't get into the supermarket" was wrong, because it was so cold inside that it seemed that you had to find the entrance to the supermarket. By the light of the flashlight, it can be found that there are still many cars parked in the garage, and it is possible that their owners have been infected before they can take them out. Duan Ke was still holding my arm, and he could feel that she was shivering, and he didn't know if it was because he was scared or because he was too cold. I turned around and whispered to her, gesticulating, "Let's walk around the garage and see if we can find a door." β
I don't know why I'm whispering, maybe it's because it's in the dark. Human beings are environmental animals, and they will always subconsciously feel that there will be things in the dark that you don't know.
After walking around the concrete wall of the parking lot, I finally found a wooden door embedded in the wall. There was a sign on the door that said "idlers are not allowed to enter", and I subconsciously thought about whether I was an idler. The current situation may not be idlers, I thought, so I reached out and knocked on the door wickedly, wondering how to open it.
The door was locked, and the entire block was so smooth that no point of focus could be found. It's going to be hard now. I asked Duan Ke to help me lift the flashlight and light, and I kept touching the door to find a way. Just as I was at a loss, the sound of the lock turning from inside the door sounded, and before I could react, the door slammed open from the inside and hit me on the head. Then a hand grabbed me by the hair and pulled it in, and in an instant my neck was stuck between the doors. I felt a wave of vertigo and was about to curse, but the next second, I felt a blade against my Adam's apple
