CHAPTER XVI
"Are you sure this disguise works?" Nack asked, uncomfortably touching his make-up face, "I have no intention of questioning your magic, but to have a sub-giant disguised as an orc... I don't want to eat raw food like those stinky guys. β
"Not all orcs eat raw," Rhaegar replied impatiently, "many orcs are used to eating cooked food, and only an orc can compare to a sub-giant." Plus, this is the fourth time you've asked the same question, and if you doubt my camouflage skills, I can think of another way, like using Transfiguration to turn you into a dwarf. β
Faced with such an answer, the sub-giant wisely closed his mouth - no sane person would provoke a mage when he was about to lose his patience.
After a lot of hard fighting, the expedition team that finally eliminated their opponents suffered heavy losses: the tomahawk was badly burned all over, and the stubborn dwarf still had to spend a week in bed even after Rhaeggar's magical healing, Hank's magic missile nearly shattered Willy's shoulder bone, and although the magic potion could heal these injuries quickly, it would take at least a few days to recuperate as freely as before, and in contrast, despite the torment of the electricity that had exhausted Heim, the elf was still in the best condition of the men, and after only one day, he was rejuvenatedγ
In this situation, the whole team realizes that unless they want to go to the swamp to die, they must repair for a while, and then the supply becomes a big problem, so the most powerful sub-giants and the mage with the magic bag become the undisputed purchasers.
"Remember, I'm a mage from the far south," before entering the city, Rhaegar once again told Nack, who was still not very comfortable with the appearance of the orcs, "And you are the orc slave I have subdued, you can't speak or act until you get my orders, and if someone provokes you, you must ask him..."
"Roar ferociously," said Nack, "and try to beat him to a smig before you order me to stop, and I'll do as you say, my esteemed master." β
There was no doubt that Rhaegar's camouflage had succeeded in hiding everyone's eyes, and even the soldiers who had participated in the battle the previous day had not been able to recognize Nack, the giant they remembered, but at the same time, the appearance of being disguised as an orc caused them some trouble.
"This creature is not welcome here," a middle-aged bartender who looked like a bartender stopped them as they finished most of their purchases and were about to enter a tavern to buy some spirits for the grumpy dwarves who were sick in bed, "Orcs can't enter the tavern." β
At Rhaegar's orders, Nack roared angrily at this apparent racism.
"This is my slave," said Rhaegar to the bartender, stopping the somewhat contrived show of the sub-giant, "he won't cause trouble, and if you don't want us in, then please get us some blood liquor here, or tell us where else to sell it, and we'll go at once." β
"Orcs deserve nothing but garbage and feces," said the bartender, "and nothing is sold to them or their companions here." β
This kind of naked provocation made Rhaegar frown, "Very well," he said, "I'm glad you gave me a reason to be angry." A ball of lightning rose in his hand, causing those watching the excitement to let out a burst of exclamation.
"You're a brave man," Rhaegar deliberately raised the ball of lightning in his hand, "but sometimes, pointless bravery has to be paid. β
"Forgive him for his ignorance," said a gray-haired man who hurried out of the tavern, "we have no doubt offended a great mage," the old man said in an almost humble tone, "I apologize to you for the actions of my son, whose wife and son were killed by the orcs. β
The ball of light in Rhaeggar's hand gradually dissipated into the air, and he didn't really want to hurt the middle-aged man, that would only attract the hostility of the city's residents.
However, his opponent did not think so, and as he dispersed the ball of light, the bartender, who had been shocked by magic, suddenly pounced and tried to attack him in close quarters.
A large hand grabbed the bartender's fist, and then, with a ferocious roar, the stout middle-aged man was thrown out by Nack, and after flying more than ten meters, his body fell heavily to the ground.
This caused a commotion in the crowd once again, and the disgust for the orcs and sympathy for the weak made it easy for the men to side with the bartender, and as events unfolded, more and more people began to gather around the door of the tavern to watch the conflict, which made Rhaegar feel a little uneasy.
"Let's go. "It was clear that such an occasion was no longer suitable for any trading, and Rhaegar was the first to walk out of the crowd, and out of awe of magic, no one dared to intercept them.
"We're in company," Rhaegar said to Nack suddenly an hour after leaving the city of Hanar, "It seems that our trouble in the city has attracted the attention of some people." β
They were now walking on a path leading to the mountains north of the city, where Haim and the others were in a hidden cave in the mountains, where elves' natural camouflage skills and Rhaeggar's magic made it impossible for anyone to discover their hiding place.
"What shall we do?" Rhaeggar's words immediately caused Nack to be nervous, the sub-giant was not afraid of any opponent, but the wounded companion could not help but worry him.
"They must be diverted. Rhaegar said without hesitation: "Obviously, there are mages among them, and our whereabouts are completely under the watchful eye of magic, but they are probably just suspicious, after all, there are only two people now, and one of them is still an orc, all we have to do now is pretend that nothing happened, and then walk away from them in Heim, until they give up the surveillance or can't bear to do it." β
"But what about Heim?" asked Nack, "they don't know what we've encountered, what if they meet those people when they come out to look for us?"
Rhaegar was silent. If he had not hesitated to leave everyone behind and flee alone before that battle in the woods, but not now, the enemies of those squads had already made others a member of this team, and no matter where he went, he could not get rid of the entanglement of those people, from this point of view, it was the safest and wisest choice to be with the expedition, at least these strong warriors were a lot of strength.
