Chapter 11: Discovery
On Sunday morning, Joshua and Funk arrived at Huntelaar's house.
Yesterday because of Old Huntelaar's birthday, the two of them could only honestly not go anywhere, but today is Sunday, they can't sit still, and they run over to take John to the factory to have a look.
The newly purchased factory is just across the river, an hour away.
"I'm not going, am I?"
John, and he has no interest in these things at all, he just wants to get dividends in a down-to-earth manner, how can he have the heart to go to any factory? And for the past two days he has been thinking about Miss Philip, curious and worried, and even more reluctant to go out.
However, Joshua did not let him go, and patiently persuaded him: "John, you are the majority shareholder of the factory, but you have never been to the ...... except when you first bought it."
"That's right, that's right!"
Feng Ke smiled, dragged John up from the sand, and said loudly: "Go, go, how can you go out to breathe in such a good weather?" â
Looking at the sunlight outside the window, John was speechless.
At the insistence of his two friends, John had no choice but to talk to his grandfather in the study, and got into Joshua's carriage and drove in the direction of the factory. It's just that he has only been walking for ten minutes before he secretly cries out bitterly. Although it was still early, the temperature was not too high, and the breeze from the carriage was very comfortable, but this damn carriage was something he couldn't enjoy, and after a while, he felt uncomfortable.
It was impossible to turn back, so John had to honestly look at the scenery on the side of the road and divert his attention.
There is really nothing to see in New York in 188o, and you may be more curious the first time, but after staying for a long time and going to the streets more often, it feels very monotonous to John, and those "ancient" buildings look awkward, and the messy carriages and pedestrians on the road are even more headaches.
"When the bike goes on the market, I'm afraid it's even more messy."
The thought of the mixed streets of bicycles, horse-drawn carriages, and pedestrians suddenly made John grin and feel good to be a part of and make ZĂ o history......
"Huh?"
Just when John's mind was scattered, and he didn't know what year and month he had run, he suddenly saw a familiar figure out of the corner of his eye, and suddenly sat up straight.
"What's wrong?"
Joshua was also taken aback by him, and hurriedly asked.
Ignoring his friend's question, John first hooked up and looked behind the carriage before saying, "Joshua, do you think that carriage doesn't look like our family?" â
"Your carriage?"
Joshua hurriedly turned his head to look, and immediately nodded again and again: "Yes, it is indeed your carriage...... Hey, isn't your grandfather at home? Why is the carriage outside? â
"It's Henry!"
Almost at the same time, both reacted. Henry, the coachman and valet of the Huntelaar family, must have come out in a carriage.
Only, what is he doing here?
Watching the family's carriage fade away, John had long lost interest in observing the scenery around him, his eyebrows tightly locked, and he soon fell into deep thought......

"Mr. Elber, do you know anything about Miss Philip?"
On Monday morning, after attending theology and having lunch, John had just sat down and nodded at the butler, motioned for the other party to come to his side, and then asked in a low voice.
"This ......"
Hans hesitated for a moment, and then replied in a low voice: "Sir, your grandfather has already dealt with this matter, and I don't think you should care anymore." â
"It's my business, you just have to tell me what I want to know."
John had already guessed the possible reaction of Mr. Butler, so he was not surprised, and said in a calm voice.
It's just that although John's tone and expression didn't show a trace of fluctuation, Hans's heart jumped violently after hearing this. As a housekeeper, he naturally heard John's determination, and he also heard the unquestionable taste.
This feeling is too similar to that of old Huntelaar!
This time, Mr. Butler hesitated for a long time, and only after a while did he take a deep breath and said in a low voice: "Sir, the day before yesterday Mr. Huntelaar ordered me to find Miss Philip, sent her $1oo in cash, and then informed her in writing that she had been relieved of her position as tutor...... I don't know much else. â
1oo dollars, which is exactly two months' salary for Miss Philip, although the old Huntelaar fired the other party, but it was not too much, and if you save a little money, this money is enough to make a person live for a few months.
"But you didn't go out the day before yesterday, did you?"
After a moment's thought, John suddenly asked. The day before yesterday was old Huntelaar's birthday, and Hans must have had to prepare at home all day, and of course it was impossible to go out, which John remembers clearly.
Hans nodded, and hurriedly added, "It was yesterday, I asked Henry to go yesterday!" â
"Henry?"
John's heart moved, and he immediately remembered the carriage he saw on the road yesterday, but he didn't ask any further, but exhaled and said, "Why did Grandpa fire her, don't you know?" â
Shaking his head, Hans said with great certainty: "I'm sorry sir, I really don't know anything else, I just sent cash and the dismissal letter." â
After staring at the butler for a long time, and seeing Hans's calmness, John finally nodded and said softly, "Mr. Elber, can you please write me the address where Miss Philip lives?" â
"Sir!"
Hearing this, Hans's face, which was originally quite calm, suddenly changed greatly, and he said hurriedly: "That kind of place is not for a gentleman like you to go, if you have anything to convey to Miss Philip, just tell me!" â
Seeing Hans's anxious appearance, John became more and more puzzled, and he frowned and asked, "Mr. Elber, is the environment where Miss Philip lives in a bad environment?" â
"Yes, very bad!"
After a slight pause, Hans said in an accentuated tone.
Seeing that John didn't seem to believe it, Hans sighed and said, "Sir, the place where Miss Philip lives is not only a poor environment, but also full of dangers, and there are Italians everywhere, so ......"
The butler didn't finish his sentence, but John understood.
In this era of New York, the Italians are synonymous with danger. Unlike Germans, who are mostly skilled workers, Italians are mostly uneducated and unskilled, and it is difficult to find a job with sufficient income after coming to the United States. Therefore, in New York City, Italians, like the Irish, are the kind of people who are unwilling to come into contact with and provoke.
Knowing this, John hesitated in his heart.
But after thinking about it for a moment, he nodded at Hans and said, "Mr. Elber, I need you to write down Miss Philip's address!" Don't worry, I won't be there personally, but there are some things I want to know about......"
âŚâŚ
John didn't end up getting Miss Philip's address either.
On the one hand, it is because Mr. Butler resolutely refuses to give, no matter how much he coerces and tempts. Hans knew very well that John might be the future owner of the Huntelaar family, but the old Huntelaar was in charge of the house. On the other hand, it was because on Wednesday afternoon the postman brought him a letter from Miss Philip.
The letter was simple, just a few lines: "Dear John, I'm sorry I can't go back to Huntelaar's house, I'll pay you back your hundred dollars, thank you again for helping me." â
There is only payment, no address.
Looking at the somewhat scribbled handwriting on the letter, but it was indeed Miss Philip's, John's eyes sank, and he couldn't help worrying for the governess......
