Chapter Seventy-Six: Decision

In March 1885, for the new editor of The Lancet, Edward ? Schmidt was definitely one of the luckiest months for vocals.

Shortly after joining the editorial board of the magazine, Edward was only responsible for doing odd jobs for the editors of Graham and David, but by chance he took over a paper from Mr. Graham from Berlin - a paper on surgical sterilization practices.

As a staunch supporter of Mr. Liszt, Edward was initially unimpressed by the paper, but when he saw the man who signed it, John ? When the surgeons of Huntelaar proved it with the results of the real yĆ n room, this disbelief quickly disappeared without a trace. Famous surgeons now, such as Joseph? Mr. Liszt, it is common to use the patient's postoperative condition to illustrate the effect of disinfection, but this is the first time that the results of the real room have been used to illustrate it like that paper!

At a time when bacteriology had just been established, this was definitely a groundbreaking idea!

A graduate of the Edinburgh Medical School and an admirer of Liszt, Edward sensed the great value of the paper almost the first time he read it, and then recommended it to Mr. Graham as soon as he read it. Graham, though he was very concerned about what Mr. Huntelaar was doing without the theory of blood grouping, as a qualified editor, he nevertheless personally sent the paper to Professor Liszt of the Royal Society, asking him to help judge its value.

But before Liszt's reply came back, Edward, who couldn't hold back his excitement, gave it to John in his personal name? Mr. Huntelaar wrote a letter expressing his curiosity and admiration for this new way of research, but Graham did not know whether it was because of the awkwardness in his heart, so he never replied, or whether he intended to wait for Mr. Liszt's conclusions to come back.

Thereupon......

Wait until Graham starts writing to John. When the manuscript was about to be published, his little henchman Edward received a letter from Berlin. This is John's reply to him, in which he thanked him for his support and answered some questions and details about surgical sterilization. Then, less than two weeks later, Edward received another letter from the University of Berlin, a long letter of surprise to him.

Said it was a long letter. But when Edward opened it, he found that it was actually a text message and three papers.

Is the text message John? Mr. Huntelaar wrote to him, in addition to thanking The Lancet for accepting his paper, he also made an unexpected invitation, and Edward, who saw this invitation, instantly opened his mouth wide and his heart fluttered......

ā€œā€¦ā€¦ Edward! ā€

A cry that can accentuate the tone of voice, put Edward? Schmidt called back from his hard work.

"Huh? Who called me? ā€

Looking up in the direction where the voice came from, Edward's face was dazed, and at a glance he knew that his mind was still on what he was thinking about.

Mr. Fass stood in the doorway of his office. He shouted, "What are you looking at? I shouted several times but didn't hear it...... The coffee is gone, hurry up and get another pot! ā€

"Oh, yes, sir!"

Edward quickly stood up and trotted away.

In this era, there was no instant coffee, and naturally there were no fully automatic coffee machines, so if you wanted to drink it, you had to grind and brew it yourself, so Edward must have been busy for a while. Just as he walked away, though. Fass walked up to his seat with some curiosity and muttered in a low voice, "What the hell is this kid looking at?" ā€

Edward, a young man, was still very fond of Fas. Young, energetic, and very diligent, usually there is something to do as long as you say hello to do it properly, but just now I haven't heard him say hello, it is indeed a relatively rare situation.

Picked up the stack of white paper on Edward's desk and flipped through it. Mr. Fass quickly snorted softly, "Huh? This seems to be a thesis...... And there is more than one, how can it be in Edward's hands? ā€

As a matter of thumb, the first year of the new Edward's job is not allowed to review manuscripts independently, but only to see the manuscripts that the veteran editors have decided whether to admit or not. And these manuscripts had to go through Fas's hands, so he was very strange to see that Edward had manuscripts in his hands.

Surprised. Fass naturally looked at it.

"Huh?!"

After flipping through a few pages, Mr. Fass sighed again, but his voice was much louder and his voice was much higher, and his expression, which had been calm just now, quickly became stern......

……

"Gotcha! Get! ā€

When there was a crisp knock on the door, Bergman was packing his things and getting ready to go home.

Today was a busy day for him, because in addition to the surgery, he had just taken in two more students to study, namely John's companions, Paul and Robert. Therefore, as the master of the surgery, Bergman had to receive them well, at least arrange for a period of study and work in the future.

Therefore, when he opened his mouth to say "please come in", Bergman's voice was inevitably much lower than usual.

"Professor, are you going to leave right away?"

After entering the door and seeing Bergman packing his things, John's brow furrowed slightly, and he asked with a smile.

"Hmm."

Seeing that it was John, Bergman couldn't help but have a headache, and asked with a wry smile in his heart: "John, is there something to find me?" ā€

After a slight hesitation, John nodded and said, "Yes professor, the school notified me to submit a dissertation as the basis for conferring my MD degree in May, and I chose the paper on lumbar puncture sampling cerebrospinal fluid, which requires your signature!" ā€

"Oh? Why don't you choose the one with the disinfection specification? Isn't it sure it's going to be published? ā€

Naturally, Bergman knew about John's graduation for a long time, so he was not surprised, but he was slightly puzzled by his choice of thesis.

And......

The thought that John could get a doctorate diploma just two years after he came, Bergman was also secretly amazed in his heart.

In fact, the University of Berlin's medical doctorate generally takes at least four years, and although most American students choose to study here, very few can actually get a doctorate, and many will go to the UK to get a degree at the end. In other words, American students generally learn real skills in Germany, and then go to the UK to mix a diploma and return to China, because German diplomas are really difficult to get!

But John is clearly an exception!

Perfect access to all exams and at least three independently signed papers before graduation, which is also quite rare among graduates of the University of Berlin. So in any way, there is no reason why the school should not give him a doctoral diploma!

However, it was obvious that John didn't care much about this, and he smiled slightly: "It doesn't make a difference, anyway, any article will be published quickly, and I just have this one ready-made, so I don't need to rewrite it." ā€

"Uh...... Also. ā€

Hearing John say this, Bergman nodded silently.

The method of lumbar puncture to extract cerebrospinal fluid is very simple and very easy to demonstrate, so it is conceivable that it will only be published sooner or later. But Bergman also knew that it was not easy to think of this method, and that it required a very good familiarity with the anatomy of the nervous system, and being able to think of it.

In this regard, John is undoubtedly very good.

Perhaps even Johann himself did not know that if he had been a few months later, another German physician would have discovered the secret, and the person who had invented the waist wear would have to be replaced......

"So, I don't know what you're thinking about that matter?"

Without waiting for Bergman to think more, John said the main purpose of coming to him today.

"This ......"

Hearing this headache, Bergman hesitated again.

However, John, who already knew the bottom of his mind, didn't plan to drag it out today, and then said: "Sir, in a month at most, I will be able to get a doctorate in medicine from the University of Berlin, so I hope to be able to confirm it as much as possible, otherwise I will have to make plans early!" ā€

John's expression was very solemn and his attitude was very resolute!

If the surgery at Charlotte Hospital didn't allow it, John would immediately go to another hospital, or even simply build a clinic that could do surgery himself! In this era, although the Germans were ahead of the Americans and had begun to pay attention to the question of medical qualifications, a doctorate in medicine from the University of Berlin was sufficient anyway.

Looking at John's calm expression, Bergman knew that if he wanted to keep this promising student, he would have to give him a clear answer today...... (To be continued......)

PS: This volume is finally over.

I'm a little tired of writing it myself, so let's get to the point, haha.
