Chapter 343: Volcanic Eruption

The weather in November has turned cold, and this month also happened something that Zhao Chen did not expect: a volcanic eruption in Colombia, which killed more than 25,000 people, the largest natural disaster in recent years.

This is the eruption of the Nevado del Ruiz volcano in Colombia, and it was two large-scale eruptions in a row, leading to a large amount of magma and rocks engulfing several towns around the volcano, and it is not surprising that the death toll is so high.

It has to be said here that Colombia is far less densely populated than many other countries, and if such a massive volcano were to occur in the territory of a populous island country, the death toll would only increase many times.

The volcano had its first eruption on the afternoon of the 13th and again in the evening. Among them, the town of Amero was the most severely affected, and after the eruption, the entire small town was buried by seven or eight meters of magma, rocks and volcanic ash, and 80% of the residents of the city are estimated to have died, which can be said to account for the majority of the deaths.

Due to the melting of the snow around the volcano throughout the year, the water level of several rivers near Daozhì has risen sharply, threatening the lives and property of tens of thousands of people in the river basin below, affecting an area of 30,000 square kilometers and 130,000 people, and the material damage is even more difficult to estimate.

It can be said that this volcanic eruption alone has caused countless economic crises in Colombia, and the country's economy has not known how many years it will take to go backwards, at least much greater than the crisis caused by the so-called 911 in the United States.

After receiving the news of the eruption, Colombian President Betancourt immediately convened an emergency meeting to analyze the situation and take relief measures, designating an area of 180 kilometers around the volcano as a disaster area.

In the aftermath of the eruption, large numbers of Colombian soldiers, Red Cross members and volunteers flocked to the disaster area to rescue and evacuate the victims. In addition, tens of thousands of citizens and many official and private organizations donated cash, tents, food, medicine and household utensils to the disaster area.

The capital is Bogotá alone. On the 14th and 15th, more than 1,000 tons of relief materials and about 30,000 US dollars were collected in two days, among which the site of the Bogotá Expo has now become a centralized place for donating disaster relief materials.

At such times, there is a spontaneous cohesive formation of people who bring goods there by people from all over Colombia in cars, on motorcycles or bicycles, or even on foot. Many others, including children, took off their clothes on the spot to help the victims.

After a disaster. Countries around the world, especially Latin American countries, immediately mobilized to aid Colombia. A large number of rescue workers and relief supplies from various countries are being transported to the affected areas.

In addition to these Colombian residents, the United Nations General Assembly unanimously adopted a resolution calling on all Member States to generously provide emergency assistance to Colombia to help the affected Colombians rebuild their homes. Nearly $30 million has been provided in funding alone, but the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) accounts for the majority of these funds, which makes one wonder how 'generous' other UN members are.

It must also be said that the International Committee of the Red Cross provided 1 million Finnish marks for relief to the victims of the Colombian volcanic eruption, according to the 1985 ratio of the mark to the US dollar. That's less than $20,000.

In addition to these funds and supplies, the U.S. government decided to send 12 helicopters to the disaster area shortly after the disaster occurred to assist the Colombian government in locating, relieving and evacuating the victims.

In fact, this disaster could have been prevented, at least it would have reduced most of the damage. Because the eruption was a clear foreshadower, the Ruiz volcano, which was covered with snow all year round, had begun to eject fine sediment, and the sediment particles were gradually increasing. At night, the snow melts quickly, setting off huge waves of sediment and pouring downward.

At that time, someone in the village near the volcano called to report the situation, but the reception was skeptical, and the mayor Rodríguez and the pastor Osorio kept reassuring the residents. Considering that the situation is similar to that which occurred in August 1985, it should not be a big problem.

And that's not all. The pastor also led the crowd to Mass at 5 p.m. that day, and said in front of the public that it would be safe, which also convinced most of the people who were skeptical.

It wasn't until 11 p.m. that the mayor hurriedly made a radio speech asking residents to evacuate, but it was obviously too late. Twenty minutes after the evacuation order was given, it had not arrived. The torrent of sediment was the first to collapse the substation, and for a time the whole city was pitch black, and then soon entered the town of Amero, which was located in the canyon, and the mayor himself was not spared.

Without any preparation, the casualties can be imagined. This eruption is arguably the largest natural disaster in Colombia's history.

Although the intensity of the eruption was relatively small, the ash and gas associated with melting snow and ice formed a mudslide. As the mudslide rolled down, it added mud and rock, increasing its volume and density, causing the 39-metre-deep terror to sweep across the inhabited river valleys at breakneck speed, destroying everything they passed through and causing road damage.

This eruption is enough to be included in the top ten catastrophic volcanic eruptions in history, and the losses can be ranked in the top five compared to the number of deaths, and it is also the most severe disaster for mankind in recent years, far greater than the two plane crashes in 1984.

However, due to the relationship between Colombia and the country, the volcanic eruption has undoubtedly shrunk a lot in other countries' reports, after all, this is Colombia, not the so-called developed countries such as the United States and island countries.

After the eruption, Dias, the secretary of the church of Lleida, who had personally experienced the disaster, reported with great sorrow: "You can't treat nature with experience and imagination, you should adopt a scientific attitude!" ”

In his opinion, if it were not for the suspicion of the top and not taking any measures, the losses would not have been so great. And the death of so many people directly broke the bones of the country of Colombia.

Zhao Chen obviously hadn't seen the report of this disaster in his previous life, so naturally it can be said that he was unexpected, although he had the experience and memory of his previous life, but not all international events were clear, after all, Zhao Chen in his previous life was not born in this era, not to mention that this is still a major event in other countries.

As for the two aviation incidents in 1984, it was entirely because of the so-called Malaysia Airlines incident that occurred before the crossing, that Zhao Chen at that time searched for aviation incidents in history, which can be said to be a mistake.

However, although this incident was unexpected for him, Zhao Chen still reacted, for him, who was already worth more than 10 billion US dollars, money was simply a number in addition to being a symbol of status, and his property could be opened in a bank.

Among them, the anime that brought him the most was not "Dragon Ball", which created the miracle of Zào's single book, but "Pokemon", "Gundam", "Yu-Gi-Oh" and "Transformers". You must know that even if the output value of these four animations in history does not reach 10 billion US dollars, the difference is not big. Even if they are still in their 'infancy'!

In addition to the output value of animation, Zhao Chen still has a lot of other investments, among which the best returns are undoubtedly Microsoft and Apple, which have entered a period of rapid development, in these two companies, he controls a lot of stocks, and these stocks have increased by at least dozens of times in just two years, which can be said to be completely standing on the shoulders of giants in history to make money.

In terms of Zhao Chen's current wealth, the chances of being first on the Forbes rich list may not be great, but at least he can enter the top ten, after all, it is still 1985! Also judging from the growth rate of his assets, it may not take two or three years to stand in the first position, and it is likely to stand in this position for continuous re-election, mainly due to the rapid growth rate of his industry.

It is precisely for one reason or another that the current Zhao Chen has long attached little importance to money, and has reached the point of ignoring it, even if he spends so much money crazily, he can't use it at all, but will gather more and more like a snowball.

When he heard that Colombia was affected by the disaster, Zhao Chen once again extended a helping hand and donated 100 million US dollars to the disaster-stricken areas in Colombia in his personal name. In order to prevent the funds from being exploited by other organizations for no reason, he was afraid that there would be a situation similar to the Red Cross's 'prices that have risen several times or even dozens of times after the disaster', so the organization that runs the money is also a foundation set up by himself.
