The weather in November has turned cold, and this month also happened something that Zhao Chen did not expect: a volcanic eruption in Colombia, which killed more than 25,000 people, the largest natural disaster in recent years.

It can be said that this volcanic eruption alone has caused countless economic crises in Colombia, and the country's economy has not known how many years it will take to go backwards, at least much greater than the crisis caused by the so-called 911 in the United States.

After receiving the news of the eruption, Colombian President Betancourt immediately convened an emergency meeting to analyze the situation and take relief measures, designating an area of 180 kilometers around the volcano as a disaster area.

In the aftermath of the eruption, large numbers of Colombian soldiers, Red Cross members and volunteers flocked to the disaster area to rescue and evacuate the victims. In addition, tens of thousands of citizens and many official and private organizations donated cash, tents, food, medicine and household utensils to the disaster area.

The capital is Bogotá alone. On the 14th and 15th, more than 1,000 tons of relief materials and about 30,000 US dollars were collected in two days, among which the site of the Bogotá Expo has now become a centralized place for donating disaster relief materials.

At such times, there is a spontaneous cohesive formation of people who bring goods there by people from all over Colombia in cars, on motorcycles or bicycles, or even on foot. Many others, including children, took off their clothes on the spot to help the victims.

After a disaster. Countries around the world, especially Latin American countries, immediately mobilized to aid Colombia. A large number of rescue workers and relief supplies from various countries are being transported to the affected areas.

In addition to these Colombian residents, the United Nations General Assembly unanimously adopted a resolution calling on all Member States to generously provide emergency assistance to Colombia to help the affected Colombians rebuild their homes. Nearly $30 million has been provided in funding alone, but the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) accounts for the majority of these funds, which makes one wonder how 'generous' other UN members are.

It must also be said that the International Committee of the Red Cross provided 1 million Finnish marks for relief to the victims of the Colombian volcanic eruption, according to the 1985 ratio of the mark to the US dollar. That's less than $20,000.

In addition to these funds and supplies, the U.S. government decided to send 12 helicopters to the disaster area shortly after the disaster occurred to assist the Colombian government in locating, relieving and evacuating the victims.

In fact, this disaster could have been prevented, at least it would have reduced most of the damage. Because the eruption was a clear foreshadower, the Ruiz volcano, which was covered with snow all year round, had begun to eject fine sediment, and the sediment particles were gradually increasing. At night, the snow melts quickly, setting off huge waves of sediment and pouring downward.

At that time, someone in the village near the volcano called to report the situation, but the reception was skeptical, and the mayor Rodríguez and the pastor Osorio kept reassuring the residents. Considering that the situation is similar to that which occurred in August 1985, it should not be a big problem.

And that's not all. The pastor also led the crowd to Mass at 5 p.m. that day, and said in front of the public that it would be safe, which also convinced most of the people who were skeptical.

It wasn't until 11 p.m. that the mayor hurriedly made a radio speech asking residents to evacuate, but it was obviously too late. Twenty minutes after the evacuation order was given, it had not arrived. The torrent of sediment was the first to collapse the substation, and for a time the whole city was pitch black, and then soon entered the town of Amero, which was located in the canyon, and the mayor himself was not spared.

Without any preparation, the casualties can be imagined. This eruption is arguably the largest natural disaster in Colombia's history.

Although the intensity of the eruption was relatively small, the ash and gas associated with melting snow and ice formed a mudslide. As the mudslide rolled down, it added mud and rock, increasing its volume and density, causing the 39-metre-deep terror to sweep across the inhabited river valleys at breakneck speed, destroying everything they passed through and causing road damage.

This eruption is enough to be included in the top ten catastrophic volcanic eruptions in history, and the losses can be ranked in the top five compared to the number of deaths, and it is also the most severe disaster for mankind in recent years, far greater than the two plane crashes in 1984.
