Chapter 31: Tracking the Orcs (4)
The number of clicks exceeded 300,000, which is gratifying.
What kind of destructive power does an entire tribe of orcs erupt when they go into madness? In tracking down their target, the team learns the answer to this question: during the five-day march, these orcs are almost indistinguishable from locusts, doing only two things a day, running and hunting, and whatever material they can use in their path, whether it's a fern that is ferocious or a fern that only herbivores eat, is their target. Wherever the orcs passed, there was no life left but barren land and a messy trail of footprintsβthe same orcs who had lost their lives fighting wild beasts had entered the bellies of their own people.
"If they can maintain this state of affairs forever, no army will be able to defeat them head-on. Haim, who saw the orc's every move through the Magic Eagle, said in admiration: "These orcs have now become a bunch of monsters, they are not afraid of death, they do not feel any pain, even if they lose their hands and feet, they will use their teeth to fight the enemy." β
"They're just overdrawing their potential. "As a mage, no one in the squad knows the mysteries of life better than Rhaeggar," many races have such methods, and when there is a crisis, some people will be singled out to perform these secret methods, but these methods have all had great side effects, and I doubt that when the celebration is over, how many orcs will be able to stand up on their own. β
"That's just right," said Tomahawk, "and we can cut off the heads of those stinky fellows one by one without much difficulty..."
Mer, who was running at the same speed as the orcs a few kilometers ahead, suddenly stopped, and the next moment, the upper half of the swamp monster that had transformed into a giant python stood tall, and its thick body began to expand rapidly.
Moments before Mel stopped, Rhaegar had already flown into the air from its body, several ropes dangling from his waist at the same time, wrapping around his companions and carrying them away from the monster's back.
"What's wrong?" the tomahawk that fell back to the ground looked in surprise at Merr, who was rapidly growing dozens of meters away, "What's wrong with it?"
"It has completely absorbed the crystallization of the power of the Earthwalking Worm," Rhaegar replied, "and now that it is evolving, I'm afraid we won't be able to use the power of this monster anytime soon." β
The geist made a few quick gestures, and a series of strange symbols that shimmered yellow flew out of his hand, landed around Mel, and then vanished, and the huge body of the swamp monster disappeared from everyone's sight at the same moment.
"This magic will allow it to evolve undisturbed," Rhaegar said, "but no one knows how long it will take to complete, and we'll have to go our own way." β
This was obviously not good news for the team, and without Mel, the explorers had to chase down the frenzied orcs on foot, and although Rhaegara's magic allowed them to keep up with them, the constant chase made them feel extremely tired, and almost everyone breathed a sigh of relief when Heim, who was in charge of observing the target, announced that the orcs had stopped.
"The lair of the orcs is in a valley five kilometers away from here," Haim used his sword to trace the terrain seen through the Eagle, "It was a very secret place, the mouth of the valley was covered by a lot of rocks, there was only a narrow gap at the top, and the whole valley road seemed to lead to the ground, even the Eagle could not see the specific situation in the valley. β
"We are now faced with two choices," Heim looked up at his companions, "in a sense, we have found the lair of the orcs, once the ritual begins, all the orcs will not leave that valley for at least half a month, and the next thing we have to do is to inform Norn and his men where the valley is." β
"But we don't know what's going on in the valley," Heim continued, "We don't know if the orcs have other passages, or what defenses are in place throughout the valley, and if Norn attacks according to the information we've provided, we're likely to run into some big trouble." β
"So," said Nack, "we're either going to stay here and wait for the barbarians to come, or we're going into the valley and finding out what's inside." He looked at the precisely proportioned topographical map drawn by the elves of the ground, "From such a treacherous passage, where there is hardly any hiding place, into an unknown place, filled with countless crazy orcs..."
"I'll go," Rhaegar said categorically, "my magic should be better than any of you at this time, and," he paused slightly, "an alliance with the Chatula is my offer, and it must be up to me to fulfill my promise." β
"I'll go too," Willy, who had been silent since the end of the last battle, suddenly spoke, looking at Rhaegar as she looked at her, "I'm sure your magic doesn't go beyond the limits of one more person, and, as a spellcaster, you need someone to protect you from disturbing you while you're using your magic." β
"We don't know what's inside..."Rhaegar tried to dissuade Willy from being unceremoniously interrupted by the latter, "I won't let you go alone," the samurai's attitude was resolute and almost stubborn, "As a partner, I won't leave you alone in the face of unknown dangers." Maybe you're stronger and wiser than any of us, and maybe you, once a god, didn't take the orcs below seriously, but I believe that even you have times when you need others, especially in an unfamiliar environment, and maybe just a little help can make you do things that are difficult for you to do alone. β
"She's right," said Tomahawk, "but I think it's better for me to take on such a task, and don't forget, I'm a dwarf who has worked with caves and tunnels for generations, and no one knows the underground environment better than I do." β
"You're too slow to react," Willy said sharply, "and in a strange place, you have to be quick enough to judge. β
Although Willy's words were not unreasonable, the dwarf blushed from the blunt comments, but before he could retort, Haim gently tugged at his clothes and stopped him.
"I agree with Willy," said the elf, "in fact, she and I are the only ones best suited to conduct this reconnaissance - Nack is too big - and I need to stay out and command the Eagle in order to contact Norn, so she is the best candidate." β
Rhaegar turned his head and looked at Willy, the beautiful face of the warrior with a stubborn expression on her face, her eyes revealing an unchangeable determination, and she looked at the geist without flinching.
"Since you insist," Rhaegar finally backed down, turning and walking first in the direction of the valley that Haim had indicated.
"Why did you let her go?" asked Nack, puzzled, after the two had walked away, "she might be in danger." β
"Rhaegar will protect her," replied the elf, "and, do you think that if we disagree, she won't go with her?" β
"When do you think Rhaegar will understand?" After a moment of silence, the sub-giant asked again, but this time Nack didn't get an answer, Haim just shrugged his shoulders, and it was the tomahawk who answered his question.
"Understood what?" asked the dwarf.
Nack glanced at the curious tomahawk on his face, sighed helplessly, and then turned his head and continued to discuss his next move with Heim.
