Interview with Maaya Sakamoto's new book: A delicious day in 1200 words
Maaya Sakamoto, music, stage, voice actor, radio presenter, writer...... With multiple identities, she may only be able to use the word "talented girl" to describe her. Maaya Sakamoto's latest book, "A Full Belly," has been on sale since the 28th of last month, and this collection of essays includes every essay she has been serializing since 2008. Perhaps speaking of which, everyone can already recall Sakamoto Masaya's words full of happiness and full of life. Recently, the Japanese media ddnavi conducted an interview with Maaya Sakamoto, talking about her feelings about the release of this essay collection and some of her thoughts on this essay collection. Tencent Comic Animation Channel will send you a full translation of this interview, fans should not miss it!
――Why did you come up with the title "A Treatise on Full Belly"?
Maaya Sakamoto: The title of this book is a direct reference to the name of the column that I have been serializing. Before the series began, I was very interested in "eating" and thought that "every meal should not be wasted" (laughs). Eating, I think, is the easiest way to enrich one's life. If you eat happily, you may be happy about other things. I thought so, so I came up with the title "Full Belly".
Note: In Japanese, "full stomach" means "to eat, to fill your stomach, to be satisfied".
-- This is what the book says, "Attitude towards food reflects attitude towards life." But then again, this book contains 81 essays, and although it took 7 years to write this book, it must have been quite hard to find a subject matter to write so many essays.
Maaya Sakamoto: In the past seven years, I can say that I have lived while thinking about the subject matter of writing in my head (laughs). Keeping a keen eye on the occasion at all times, he visits a variety of newly opened stores like interviews. By the way, maybe a trip abroad a while ago can be summed up in this. On the other hand, I look for writing themes from my previous memories, and there are many memories related to "eating", and I once lamented that I remember so many things.
-- Each essay is condensed into 1,200 words, and the "taste" is very fresh. It's not easy to write these words that are just right and uplifting.
Maaya Sakamoto: In the beginning, I thought it would be quite difficult to include the theme and ending of the article in 1,200 words. However, I gradually realized that the difficulty of the challenge made me happy. It took me a while to read the original manuscript and try to revise the details of the article as much as possible before the deadline, but after 7 years, I think I have gained some insight into the 1,200-word essay (laughs).
――In terms of content, I feel your persistence. This dedication is very much in line with the worldview of "The Theory of Full Belly".
Maaya Sakamoto: After a year or so of the serialization, I finally came up with an answer to the question of what and how to write the book. Since then, I've been no longer wavering in my heart and can write naturally. I'm a serious person, and if I don't think about how to write first, it's easy to write something very gloomy, so I always remind myself to keep my mood good and cheerful every time I put it down. At first, I tried to write about current events, but then I thought that I might publish a book in the future, so I switched to writing about general topics. I was a little embarrassed to re-read the article from that time.
-- Most of your essays end with the phrase "satisfied." But there are some sentences that are not used, is there any other profound meaning in this?
Maaya Sakamoto: You read it really carefully (laughs). But the answer is, not at all (hilarious). Originally, I was going to end every essay with "satisfaction" no matter what it was, but sometimes I didn't feel "satisfied" at all, so I didn't write it. It probably depends on how I'm feeling. Sometimes, I really don't want to play a cheerful self, maybe I can't play a cheerful state of mind at that time (laughs).
-- Chapter 6, "The Leek Pork Liver Incident", are you in the state you just mentioned?
Maaya Sakamoto: It was really a very low time in my life. At that time, I couldn't even taste any of the food! Some time before I was about to turn 30, I seemed to unconsciously think about many things too complicated, and the loss of taste made me realize my low state and limits. It's a reflection of my dedication to food (laughs). Even in such a state of ultra-low state, it is a great feeling to take out your cheerful side and write an essay before the deadline.
-- You also talked about the loss of taste in the epilogue of the book.
Maaya Sakamoto: I've never been able to talk about it, but I've always thought that if one day I tell about it, I'll probably really get back on my feet. So this time I was finally able to write about it, and I felt much more comfortable inside.
――When you say that, I suddenly feel that the phrase "introspection and contentment" at the end of the sixth article is really full of meaning, and it is super touching!! The meaning of "The Theory of Full Belly" is really profound! By the way, what is your favorite essay in the book?
Maaya Sakamoto: Of course, I was forced to carry a big stick during the borrowing run of the athletic meeting (Part 38, "Long Stick"), and I really liked this one. At that time, I was even in the mood to die, after all, I was still wearing briefs (laughs)! When I wrote it myself, I thought it was super incredible and super funny. Then there is "Indian Style Scones: Kinno" (Part 40), the one that eats his house (Part 29, "Beef Donburi, I Miss You"), and the one that I often mention in Malaysia (Chapter 81, "Under the Blue Sky of Kuala Lumpur"). Malaysia was there to shoot the cover of the book, where I understood the meaning of my name. Ah, it took me 7 years to get there, and I felt like "everything is connected"! It made me think, it's great to have published this book!
――The name "Maya" comes from the word "MAYA", and I was really touched when I read the meaning of the word and the story of your parents in the book. This book is a collection of your "Color, Food, Fitness, Beauty" every day, who do you want to read your book?
Maaya Sakamoto: Originally, this was a serialized column in the magazine, so I didn't have any special readership, and it was suitable for everyone who happened to turn to this page. Of course, I hope that people who don't know me will also enjoy this essay. This may be a bit off-topic, but when we announced the release of the book to fan club members, we did a small survey, and the results were unexpected, and most of the members said they hadn't read the column (laughs), and some didn't even know about the column itself.
――This isn't the time to laugh!! Dear members of the fan club, please read this collection of essays after deep reflection!!
Maaya Sakamoto: But in this way, I feel very happy. Because this shows that most of the people who usually praise me for writing funny every month are neutral readers. I'm so glad to have the approval of others, and thanks to their support, I'm able to publish this book today.
――Finally, I know that the series will continue, but what is your ambition for the next seven years?
Maaya Sakamoto: When I finished this volume, I felt like "everything was over", and I even forgot about the deadline for next month (laughs). It turns out that it is still going on, and my deadline and thinking about the subject matter are still going on...... (laughs)
Maaya Sakamoto sat next to the editor-in-charge with a blue face, showing a child's mischievous smile, looking at Miss Sakamoto like this, I really want to spread what she said to more people, so that more people can feel the words of this attractive woman. Lately, have you been feeling less energetic? Is your appetite not very good? Do you feel that you should be very satisfied, but there is still something in your heart? I recommend you to try this book full of happiness, and when you finish reading it, you will definitely say it with a smile on your face - satisfied.
That's the end of this interview with Maaya Sakamoto's new book, thank you for reading. In the future, Tencent Animation Channel will continue to provide you with more and more exciting information, so stay tuned!
