Suzi is Jobs? Chong Fang Ding talks about "Ghost in the Shell"

Starting in April 2015, "Ghost in the Shell ARISEAlternativeArchitecture" will be broadcast as a TV anime. In fact, there has been a version of "Ghost in the Shell ARISE" before, and it tells the story of how the 9th section of the public security was established that has never been seen before. This TV animation will be reconstituted based on the original plan of the 4 films from 2013~2014. And also added two episodes of the plot linked to the "Ghost in the Shell New Theatrical Version" released in the summer of 2015. Therefore, it has aroused the attention of all parties. Recently, a Japanese media interviewed Oki Fangding, who is responsible for the script and series composition of this work, and learned about the charm of this TV animation from his mouth.

■ The theme is "Enemies"

Q: The "Border" series, which was previously released in the form of a movie theater, uses 4 60-minute episodes to meet us. So with the TV animation, how is the plot reconstructed this time?

Okikata: First of all, let's talk about the characteristics of the "Border" series, but I guess each episode reflects the personality of a different director. As a result, the plot is sometimes quiet, and sometimes full of action sequences. I think that this kind of relief effect can be applied to TV series. For example, with this new story, we plan to "make the action scenes more gorgeous". In addition, the TV series started with "Border4", so we also put a lot of effort into the timeline transition.

In the final analysis, this TV series is a structure that re-edits the previous works and links them with the summer theatrical version. It's a bit of a mess in terms of demand (laughs). This time, we also had the assistance of Junichi Fujisaki, who was in charge of "Ghost in the Shell S.A.C".

Q: The two new episodes are supposed to be related to the "Ghost in the Shell New Theatrical Version" released this summer.

Okikata: From a point of view, it's the "enemy" that Suko and her face. Through guò, the "enemy", Suzi's relationship with the world also surfaced. That's the framework for what we're working with. Speaking of Suko, she has acquired "ideal thoughts" through intuition in a new era full of confusion and confusion. The reason why she was able to achieve this goal was also because she found the "individual self" and was therefore able to exist as an individual, which is the "body" for her. In an era where the "individual" is similar through the guò network, Suzi still insists on the "self". And in the face of such a Suzi, there is also a role that destroys the barrier of safety and individuality, and even gives up "self". Such a character is not quite the same as Emma and others in Border4.

Q: With the development of technology, the real world is starting to get closer to the world view of Ghost in the Shell. So to create a science fiction world in this context, what efforts did you put in, and what difficulties did you face?

Okikata: In the era when director Mamoru Oshii was in charge, the Internet had not yet penetrated everyone, so I had to explain to the audience what the so-called prosthetic machine qì human was. But if we don't pay attention, we won't find that high technology is everywhere. For example, instead of making Suzi's computer space corridor seem very complicated, it makes more sense to depict it as an ordinary room. If it is too complicated, the person who comes into contact with the work will not be able to figure out what it is trying to express.

In Border1, Suzi's computer space corridor is a structure that is not premised on allowing others to enter. But as the plot unfolds, the corridor gradually allows others to enter. It's hard to describe the structure of "THE·cyber" in the past, but it's precisely because of this that the fun of the show is expressed.

■ A way to dig deeper into the character

Q: In previous series, there were very few stories about young Suko and others, so this aspect has become a major attraction. And the content of "memory manipulation" has also been involved in previous series, but I didn't expect Suzi to be deceived at all, which was surprising.

Okinaka: In "Border1", our goal is to "suddenly let everyone see the weak Suko". In this way, it also shows a completely different Suzi from before. After all, Suzi has been portrayed by us as a character who cares about "self" very much, so she must have had a painful experience in the past. As a result, memory tampering and the way of life as a prosthetic machine are unavoidable topics in ARISES.

Q: In addition to Motoko, Saito as a sniper is also very different from what we used to think.

Okikata: We conceive the story of each person's youth in the form of backwards. What will this guy do in the later episodes, so what is his purpose? How to solve these problems? We will analyze the character from the perspective of their profession and position.

For example, Saito was a high-minded and arrogant sniper, so he was told at the end of the war that "you are useless", so he fell into a state of complete idleness. That is, the standard "disposable". If you are a young person, the more likely you are to fall because of this blow. But it didn't take long for a person who understood his ability and temperament to appear and establish a relationship of trust with him. So after that, Saito would never say any more childish words. In the previous series, we saw all the characters of the "complete body", but in "ARISE", this form is deliberately broken.

■The scene of "ARISE" is the "Nine Lessons of Public Security without Suzi"

Q: The slogan of this TV series is "classless, strength-free". And in the works, Suzi often says this sentence. This era is an era in which there are many outdated organizations, so the nine lessons of public security often give people an idealized feeling.

Chongfang: The so-called network is a kind of existence that flattens the social system. To take a simple example, India is growing IT businesses at an impressive pace, and this progress is also possible because the IT profession is not tied down by the caste system. It has nothing to do with the identity system, as long as you have the ability, anyone can enter the IT company to work.

People who understand the system and structure will set rules and taboos to monopolize interests, and Suzi's value is to "get the system back on the right track". She aims for a kind of supra-classism. In fact, Suzi does not consider this issue from a theoretical point of view, but is just an intuition. However, from her, people feel a kind of enthusiasm of programmers such as Steve Jobs, which is also a sign of the development of IT.

Q: In terms of "organization", do those of you who are in the animation scene also share any values?

Okikata: The desire for teamwork is always there. Although there is an organization, drawing things is basically a form of individual work. We work in a variety of mediums, but what's the difference between a novel and a screenplay? I think that the novel needs to be imagined by the reader, and the script must be understandable to the person who draws it. Some of the lines that have been written will be cut out, but I know one thing: "As long as you can use the picture to illustrate, you don't need to have lines." So I just need to be in charge of the script. And then there's the communication with other people. It's a great pleasure to work on the job.

Q: From the perspective of "organization", what about the scene of Ghost in the Shell ARISE?

Okikata: Production I.G gives the impression of being a strength-minded person, and the chief director, Kazuya Kuse, is also a classless person. To use an analogy, it's like "Nine lessons in public security without a vegetarian" (laughs). We don't have to worry about too many things, we can make all kinds of requests, and I'm happy that I can challenge a lot of things.

Q: Finally, would you like to say a few words to the readers?

Okikata: For those who haven't been exposed to the Ghost in the Shell series, if you can pay attention to the changes in Suko and the tacit understanding with her companions, then other complicated things can be left behind. In addition, in the plot of the new work,For Suzi and others who have formed a team spirit in a sense,There will be enemies who visit from unexpected aspects.,I hope you can look forward to this.。

Q: Thank you for your time today!
