Kohata: Thank you for your kind attention. We are コアラモード who wrote the OP for "April is Your Lies".

Ishiguro: I already knew that (laughs). It's a pleasure to have the opportunity to chat with you like this today.

INTERVIEWER First of all, how did you write the theme song "Symphony of Seven Colors"?

Kohata: We watched the original before the anime aired because we liked it. I wrote this song with the idea of "not only combining the works, but also expressing my own characteristics in what way". The song "Symphony of Seven Colors" uses a theme that I had wanted to write before, but in the process of writing it, I realized that the relationship between the two people in the lyrics was exactly the same as that of Gongsheng and Kaoru in "April". So the inspiration for the song kept coming up. A song written like this became the theme song for this time......

Ishiguro: That's amazing!

あんにゅ: So when we decided, we were happy from the bottom of our hearts.

Ishiguro: I'm the producer of ANIPLEX and told me that "it's okay to have such a group and let them sing the second theme song", and I listened to this song. After entering Part 2, I was originally going to change to a new OP, and the first song was sung by Goosehouse, so who are you looking for for the second song? We've been talking about this for a long time. When I heard this song by コアラモード, I was surprised to find: "...... Isn't this the worldview of "April"! I didn't know the process of creating this song, and I thought they had introduced you to the work beforehand, but I didn't expect it to be written like this, so it is.

あんにゅ: Also, because this song is still our commercial debut, I wanted to make it as gorgeous as possible.

Ishiguro: Not only the title of the song, but also the creation of the lyrics and melody are colorful. I had this feeling when I first heard this song. When doing OP animation, special attention is paid to color matching and other details.

INTERVIEWER In the original work, music and color were two important elements, and in the anime these elements are even more prominent.

Ishiguro: Yes. Anime is basically in color, but works in the form of manga are not in color unless there are special circumstances. So having color is one of the great things about animation. It is possible to further show the charm of the original. Especially this time, I put the impression I had when I read Mr. Shinkawa's original work first, including the use of dots, etc., and I was very careful in the color scheme of the animation.

あんにゅ: It's so professional......

Ishiguro: Whether I'm talking to the singer who writes the OP and ED, or to Katsu Yokoyama, who writes the accompaniment, it's not about the sound, it's about the color, the transparency, or the light. The same is true of the "Symphony of Seven Colors", not to mention the title of the song, and the melody that can be reminiscent of colorful pictures is also well written. It can be integrated into the work without any sense of disobedience. By the way, Mr. Shinkawa should have heard this song before me, which means that Mr. Shinkawa had already selected it before it was sent to me.

——The two members of コアラモード think the original work is good?

あんにゅ: First of all, the story has a feeling of being surrounded by a spring breeze, and it can also be said that it is the atmosphere, which attracts me. Secondly, not only is it beautiful, but I also like the entanglement between the protagonist and other characters who appear on the scene. Fell in love with the whole worldview.

Kohata: What were I doing when I was 14 like the protagonists? I don't think it's so fulfilling......

Ishiguro: I've thought about this too, too (laughs).

あんにゅ: These places are so enviable (laughs).

Ishiguro: The lines are very poetic. This is the characteristic of Mr. Shinkawa. In the video, it's a monologue, and the first impression of what the characters are thinking in their heads is like the lyrics of a song.

あんにゅ: Ah, I understand, I understand.

Ishiguro: Maybe it's because of the musical theme, for example, when I play at a concert, not only himself but also other people around him have psychological monologues. These monologues should be as integrated into the live music as the lyrics, right? It's my own thoughts. Because of this, this work will resonate a lot with people who are engaged in music. Actually, I've been running bands since I was a student.

あんにゅ: Really!

Ishiguro: To be honest, I've been doing animation for as long as I've been doing music for as long as I've been doing for a long time. Not classical music, though, but a regular rock band.

Kohata: I see. You're right, those lines like poetry in the original work can really be written in one or two songs. So for those who write lyrics, this manga has a lot to learn.

Ishiguro: Shinkawa-sensei is good at using repetitive descriptions. It's like the chorus part of the music. There are many situations where the same sentence allows different people to have a conversation in an inner monologue. Under normal circumstances, it is impossible for the other person to know what is in your head.

Kohata: Yes.

Ishiguro: But in this work, it's possible. For example, there are some places where Gongsheng and Kaoru can hear each other's inner lines. These places are very musical. It's as if the same resonance is felt with the music you hear. I appreciate this way of watching. Mr. Shinkawa must also be very fond of music. It is a sketch and storyboard drawn with music. I hope that this will be inherited from the anime as well. But it's hard.

"Something a little troublesome."

あんにゅ: However, some things that are difficult to get out of the video table, such as subtle changes in expressions, are actually made. And it's not just made of it, it's so beautiful that it can suck people in.

Ishiguro: I'm really glad to hear you say that (laughs). Well, although I participated in the production of this work as a supervisor, the animation is the collective labor of many people, and it is not my own effort, but the love of all the staff for the original work. Thanks to the fact that everyone is working very actively with the idea of how to better reflect the original work. It's really hard to make a dynamic performance.

あんにゃ: Everyone's movements must match the music.

Ishiguro: Exactly. I was going to do it casually, but it's rare to animate a piece of music so carefully, and I felt that I couldn't miss this opportunity, so I tried to do my best.

あんにゃ: How do you make the subtle movements when playing?

Ishiguro: About this...... For example, if you want to draw an afterimage of the moment when the bowstring vibrates at high speed in an animation, you need to draw an afterimage. Make the screen in this state move continuously, so that the speed will appear faster than the actual screen.

あんにゃ: Ah-

Ishiguro: The most important performances were drawn directly from the performance videos that were taken for reference, but in many cases the results were not satisfactory. There needs to be a little variation, such as not bending so much, just adding a slightly more curved bowstring. Even if the picture only appears for about a few tenths of a second, it can make the action look more accurate. That's the magic of animation. If you just look at a still picture, you might think it's strange and wonder, "This picture is wrong?" but when you turn it into a picture, it looks very good.

Kohata: I've never seen an anime that makes music so realistic.

Ishiguro: There are other works of piano playing, but there is no such thing as a violin. The most famous animation played by the violin is probably "Listen Closely", where "Country Road Takes Me Home" is played.

あんにゅ: Classic.

Ishiguro: But I've never seen an anime where someone with the skills to participate in a concert can play the violin so seriously. So when I decided to "do it seriously", I already had an awareness. It must be very painful. However, when I actually started to make videos, I honestly felt like I was shooting something that was a little troublesome. While telling myself that "there will be no second chance like this", I continued to work hard...... In my mind, I actually respect the two people who make a living from music. Because I gave up the path of music.

It's fun to use music to make use of your animation

Kohata: When did you change direction?

Ishiguro: When I was a senior. Running a band and joining a club for school music activities has been the way I've been since high school. However, there are too many powerful people around me, and I lack self-confidence. Looking back now, I wasn't mentally prepared. What I like is the '60s psychedelic, underground kind of music, like TheVelvetUnderground, which is in the minority. When I was listening to the song "naked のラリーズ" at home, my mom asked, "Why does the broken speaker keep ringing?" (laughs)

Kohata: It's a minority (laughs).

Ishiguro: If you want to keep this interest in it, you have to be conscious. But I didn't. However, the animation can add a variety of sounds such as music, and the painting style will try to follow the mainstream route as much as possible, so you can play with the sound. For example, this is often the case with the works supervised by Kunihiko Kihara. I entered the animation industry because I thought I could make fun of something interesting with my music knowledge.

- What was the trigger for the two of them to decide to embark on the path of music?

Kohata: When I was in elementary school, I thought I had a lot of fun playing with everyone. Because he sat next to the drum kit at the beginning, he wishfully thought that "I can only play the drums". That being said, my main job right now isn't playing drums (laughs). I want to be a musician. In a sense, I was too obsessed with this, didn't think about other paths, and pushed myself into a corner. It turned out to be sitting here like it is now.

Ishiguro: I see. You're more than ten years younger than me, and you must have been in the late 90s when you were in elementary school.

Kohata: Yes. People don't listen to foreign songs much. At first, I listened to L'Arc-en-Ciel, SOPHIA, and other local rock music.

INTERVIEWER It was the heyday of visual kei rock.

Kohata: Yes, I used to love visual kei.

Ishiguro: Oh, I thought I was young, but I didn't expect to be so old (laughs). あんにゃ should be younger than Kohata, right?

あんにゃ: I was born in '92. I originally liked musicals, but when I was in junior high school, I joined the acting club and wanted to do musicals, but it backfired...... Also, the interpersonal relationship in the performance department is difficult (laughs).

Ishiguro: Ahahaha (laughs). I understand, I understand, I understand!

あんにゃ: I thought a lot about it, and I thought about my strength, so I gave up this path, but I still love music, and I joined the light music club in high school. Since then, we've been on the way.

Ishiguro: Was it the lead singer in the first place?

あんにゃ: Yes. Although I tried a lot, I finally decided to be the lead singer. Later, he learned to compose.

Ishiguro: By the way, I would like to ask you how the lyrics and composition are divided.

Kohata: There is no clear division of labor. Every song is different.

あんにゃ: "Symphony of Seven Colors" was written by two people together.

Kohata: Among the additional songs on the single disc, the second song is written and composed by あんにゃ, and the third song is written by me.

INTERVIEWER Is there an object or goal of worship?

Kohata: When I was an arranger, I wanted to look up to famous people, and I was greatly influenced by Takeshi Kobayashi, who wrote songs for the stars of the Southern Heavens, and Seiji Kameda. Their status is very high, and I can be happy if I can get a little closer to them.

あんにゃ:Me...... The first person to worship this was Yumi Matsutoya.

Ishiguro: Hey, young people like her too?

あんにゃ: Create a atmosphere and worldview like hers, and that's my goal as a singer-songwriter.

Ishiguro: Is it really not the Arai Yumi era, but Matsuren Yayumi?

あんにゃ: I used to listen to songs from the Yumi Arai era a lot.

Ishiguro: The style is completely different.

あんにゃ: yes. The genre is very different, but they are all objects of my admiration.

Ishiguro: Kohata, do you like old singers too?

Kohata: Words from an old singer...... I like foreign Bill Withers.

Ishiguro: I know! I like it too, but he's very different.

Kohata: I like his soul music. I listened to the concert discs.

I want to write music that I can remember in my memory

INTERVIEWER Next, we will talk about the topic of musical experience, but this time the two of you are writing about anime songs, do you have any favorite anime or anime songs?

Kohata: I love Macross F. I started to like music. "This song is so good?!" Shocked. The arrangement was also greatly influenced.

あんにゃ: I also like it very much. I'll be singing Macross F with everyone at karaoke.

Ishiguro: Yoko Kanno is a strong man.

Kohata: Ah, I also like ClariS. I like the theme song of "My Sister......

– What songs did you indulge in when you were a child?

あんにゃ: Too much...... Sometimes I unconsciously sing the theme song of "Shinobi ペンまん Maru" (laughs). I don't know why, but I unconsciously sing it when I take a bath or walk. It's unforgettable. Animated songs will remain in my heart for many years to come. So this opportunity is very rare.

INTERVIEWER Finally, please tell us about your goals after your debut.

Kohata: Following on from the topic I just asked, I wanted to write about the kind of music that can be remembered by listeners from their youth. No, I had to write this kind of music!

あんにゃ: Well...... My personality is too indecisive, and I am always "a little uneasy" in my life, and I feel that "if I did this at the time, I would have done it", and I am worried a lot of the time. But it's the music that encourages me every now and then, and we want to write songs that can make people who work hard more motivated and motivated.
