Q: Can you tell us how you came to be the original character of "M3~That Black Steel~"?

Onixian: The guy at Mag-garden said to me, "We have an anime like this here. The reason why I accepted this job was simply because I wanted to try my hand at working as a designer. In manga, the writer needs to do all the work, and the anime character needs to create the characters according to the other party's requirements, so I wanted to try this experience and tell the people at MAG-GARDEN, "Please let me do this job!" ”

Q: Specifically, when did you be notified that you would take over this task?

Oni String: Just to inform me, it must have been a long time ago. At that time, I just responded a little. After a while, I was officially entrusted with the character design of the animation.,It was probably around the end of 2012~the beginning of 2013.。

Q: Did you participate in script discussions and planning meetings?

Onixian: No, the process of this work is basically like this: first create a rough plot, then set it up to some extent, and then ask me to design the characters at the last time. I first drew a rough blueprint, and then further processed it on the basis of the characters and plot settings, and finally submitted the character design of the finished painting. After that, it was time to have a meeting with director Junichi Sato. It was at that time that I first met him.

Q: It looks like everything is going well until it's finalized.

Ghost String: It's not so much that I said "it went well", but I didn't do anything other than "draw the original plan". Draw your character and submit. As for the work related to the use of characters in animation, it is basically left to the people at SATELIGHT.

I'd love to see how the characters I designed are used in the animation. Therefore, I do not touch any work that is not related to the original project to ensure this freshness. And when I saw the anime broadcast, I sincerely sighed: "The characters have become like this!" ”

Q: Did you feel smooth about setting up each character?

Oni String: Both Maa and Iwato were determined effortlessly. However, this is not the case with Pingren and Laixia, and I was very nervous in the design stage. And it was also redesigned at one point.

Akaji-kun was originally wearing glasses. At the time, I thought the glasses man was also quite good. Sasame's bangs now look very neat. However, this is still a little shorter than the image I originally set. The two versions of the artwork look very different from each other in terms of bangs.

■ "Let the drawn characters be animated".

Q: After watching the anime, how did you view the characters that you designed?

Onixian: The facial movements of the characters are very fresh, and I was more moved by the fact that the characters can speak, not so much their movements. Because the movements of the characters can be imagined to a certain extent, but even if you draw a manga, you can't make up the voice of the character. When the characters I drew were given voices, the image of these characters in my mind suddenly became clearer. I was very moved to think, "The realism of the original characters is reflected in my heart through this form!" "This feeling makes me feel like I am raising my child little by little. When I saw the characters in the anime version, the words that came to my mind were, "Will everyone die......" and "If only I didn't die......

Q: Don't you know the plot behind the anime?

Oni String: As I said before, I set it up with these in mind after I got the general outline. But after all, everything I was given was an early setting. For example, in the first episode, there were some characters who were in a different position than the one I saw at the time. So I think maybe the whole story is different from the plot of Lu Dao that I know.

■Entanglement in the face of new challenges

Q: Is there anything you need to pay attention to when working as a designer?

Onixian: I had to realize that "what I want to create is a character that can be used in the final part of the work". This time, because it was an anime, I started with a challenge at first, and the characters also had strange hairstyles. It's also because I haven't tried these things before, and I just want to try them. However, the person who drew these drawings could not get a job as a designer, and I wondered for a long time whether the work that others wanted should reflect my tastes. ”

Q: In other words, there is a collision between new challenges and self-tastes?

Ghost String: Yes. As a result, when I created the characters, I made it my first priority to satisfy the producer. After that, it's time to try to make these characters seem to have their own characteristics. For example, double ponytails and the like.

Returning to the role, the initial draft I provided set Emmy Lou as the eldest lady of the school. Then I thought that the words of the eldest lady would definitely fit the double ponytail, so I designed it this way. Unexpectedly, when the first episode appeared, I found that she was suddenly doing the work of cleaning the toilet, and exclaimed, "Huh~!? Liarious, right!? (laughs)

Q: Did you see it for the first time at that time?

Ghost String: Uh-huh (laughs). When I took on the character job, I thought I would do my best to create it, but the plot at the time of creation has changed a lot from now, so there are some places where I am trembling, "What if the plot doesn't match the character image?" ”

■I feel like everyone is going to die, and I have uneasy thoughts (laughs)

Q: What is your impression of the work "M3~Na Black Steel~"?

Ghost String: I've only watched the first episode (during the interview) now, but because I'm in charge of drawing the impressions, I still have some feelings about the outline of the entire world. I think this work is different from the royal robot works that generally emphasize "friendship, hard work, and victory". However, the work is not just dark, but the efforts of teenagers and girls also portray their youth. I'm very interested in content that includes elements of juvenile books, so I was excited to watch M3 as such a work.

I just feel like everyone is going to die, so I'm very upset (laughs). The animation of robot + horror elements has never been heard of before, and the plot of the road that I know has changed a bit, and this series of differences also makes it more enjoyable for me to watch.

Q: If there is anything that impresses you, please let us know.

Ghost String: Well, I only care about a few small things. It's the scene where the boobs keep shaking in the first episode (laughs). At that time, I smiled like a teenager and shouted "Wow~". (laughs)

Q: That scene was drawn by director Sato, and the finished animation was faithfully reconstructed.

Ghost String: Is that so? I said, what the hell is this! No, that's great.

Other impressive plot ...... Well, I care more about the overall color scheme than the plot. I didn't color the characters. It's really just that after drawing the characters, they submit it to the production team. Therefore, what kind of colors the characters will be matched with has become a highlight that I am very much looking forward to.

The tone of the work is very depressing. I think this was carefully set to create a terrifying atmosphere and give the audience a premonition that a tragic story will follow. I was like, "Ah, this is amazing!" ”

As for the main robot, I've only seen sketches before, so I'm looking forward to the finished product as well. So I just enjoyed this anime as a viewer.

Ghost String: I feel the same way. During the design phase, I felt that Maamu and Iwato had sharp eyes, but neither Sasa nor Jishi had a hanging eye. But when the animation came out, everyone gave people a feeling of sharp eyes. I didn't realize this myself. However, such a sharp eye is impressive. It seems that the characteristics of my paintings are that I need to be processed by other people to make myself aware of them.
