Hiroichi Yamadera talks about "Space Battleship Yamato 2199"
From April 2012, "Space Battleship Yamato 2199" was released in theaters in the form of a total of 7 chapters, and was broadcast on all Japanese televisions such as MBS from April ~ September 2013. This work can be said to be the modern revival of the 1974 masterpiece "Space Battleship Yamato", so not only some loyal old fans, but also many new generations of viewers were deeply attracted to it, setting a remarkable record.
This year also coincides with the 40th anniversary of the birth of the Yamato series, and from October 11th, the official will also hold an exclusive event for the special episode "Space Battleship Yamato 2199 Memories of Sailing". In addition, from December 6th, the completely new theatrical version of the anime "Space Battleship Yamato 2199 Star Cruiser" will also be officially released throughout Japan.
This work also invited many big-name voice actors to join, among which President Desla was voiced by the well-known voice actor Koichi Yamaji. In fact, Koichi Yamadera once played the protagonist Gu Jin in "Space Battleship Yamato Resurrection Chapter", and this time he transformed into a "president", which also surprised many fans. President Desla is Yamato's enemy character, but he has been extremely popular for many years. Recently, some Japanese media conducted an exclusive interview with Yamadera Koichi to explore the charm of "president" from his mouth.
Q: Mr. Koichi Yamadera was selected to voice President Desla for "Space Battleship Yamato 2199", so first of all, would you like to tell us about this? You previously dubbed the late Kei Toyama in Space Battleship Yamato Resurrection Arc as the voice of Kosu. This time, however, he has become the president of the enemy.
Yamatera: I was surprised, too. Since I've been dubbing the ancient of "Space Battleship Yamato Resurrection Chapter" for many years, when I heard the news about the production of "Space Battleship Yamato 2199", I just thought, "There are a lot of young people with great strength now, so I guess I won't dub young people anymore." So when I was invited to join, I wondered, "Do you want to work hard to play this young role?" Unexpectedly, the other party replied: "This time it's not the ancient, but Desla." ”
This arrangement made me feel very stressed. Because I think fans of previous works will definitely complain, "Why don't you let Mr. Takeya continue to voice you?" "I'm also a huge fan of Desla's voice actor Mr. Ibu Yato. And now his voice is still very outstanding, and he is also a great actor. In fact, we also started working together from the recording of "Space Battleship Yamato Resurrection Chapter". And when I knew that I was going to be voicing Desla, I didn't know what to do.
Q: We heard that Mr. Yamadera watched the live stream of "Space Battleship Yamato" when he was in junior high school. So what do you think is so appealing to Desla?
Yamatera: There's no doubt that it's his extraordinary side. He was always able to stay calm and not waver until the last moment. Although in the later series, there has also been a plot of his heart-to-heart with the ancients, but in essence, he is a very calm and sober person. Even though I was a kid at the time, I said, "This is different from the antagonist characters in the previous anime." ”
I'm thinking, as long as you've watched "Space Battleship Yamato", there shouldn't be anyone who hates the role of Desla**? He's from the Gamilas Empire, so he has that side of the idea. So Yamato itself is not a work that punishes evil and promotes good. I think that kind of setting ties in with the fun of the set.
And then there's Mr. Ibu's voice. The phrase "all the people of Yamato" is intoxicating. I'm just imitating him. And the same is true of antiquity. “targetscopeopen! Wave Cannon Fire! This line is also something I often repeat after changing my voice. However, at that time, I didn't expect to be able to play Ancient and Dezla later.
Q: With so many emotions involved in the role of Desla, how did you work when you were recording? In Space Battleship Yamato 2199, did you make any changes to your character image?
Yamadera: If you've seen the artwork, you'll know that the style of painting this time is a little different from before. All the characters have become more beautiful, and Sado-sensei has become cute. Tokugawa also has sparkling eyes (laughs). Compared to the previous series, Desla has also become younger this time, and is very stylish and seductive.
Q: Under such circumstances, how did Mr. Yamadera come to play Desla?
Yamatera: I really like Desla as voiced by Mr. Ibu, and I feel like I'm not as good as him anyway. That's why I don't think about "how to do it if I do it myself", but I perform in every episode and series with the mood to portray the lines.
I thought it was presumptuous to think that I would create a character with my own voice, so I left it to the staff. As long as it can make a Desla voice that matches the style of "Space Battleship Yamato 2199" this time, then it is enough.
Q: What was the atmosphere like at the dubbing scene?
Yamatera: There are a lot of characters in "Space Battleship Yamato 2199", so the Yamato side and the Imperial side are recorded separately. And because of my work schedule, I often record alone, which makes me feel like I'm fighting alone, which is in line with Desla's mood (laughs).
In addition, the voice actors on the side of the empire are all powerful people with great personalities, such as Mr. Norio Wakamoto and others. In the work, despite his young age, Desla is still a high-ranking character, and he must be able to dominate them. I don't think I can lose to Desla emotionally. At the time, I sometimes thought it would be nice to record separately. If I record with them, I'll probably be terrified (laughs).
Q: So how did you overcome the pressure to play Desla?
Yamatera: Overall, I'm not a very good type of person who is good at fighting blows. So I'm not going to listen to what other people have to say. After all, as long as I listen to it, I will definitely feel frustrated.
This time, though, I stumbled online and stumbled upon a website built by former Yamato fans of Desla. And the webmaster said, "This time Desla's voice acting is also great," and then I felt like I was being praised. When I saw this, I was pleasantly surprised and thought, "I've been praised for my role as Desla." So I wept with joy. I really cried. Because I always felt that fans of the previous "Yamato" series would definitely not be satisfied with my dubbing.
In other aspects, of course, I have to believe in myself and work hard. No matter how uneasy you are, once you stand in front of the microphone, you have to understand that "only I can do this role". I thought to myself, "I'm Desla," and then stood in front of the microphone and voiced it in high spirits.
In front of the microphone, when the lines match the screen, the recording switch will be turned on. This time, I was able to create a new character that was different from the previous Desla, and I have to thank the staff for that.
Q: What are your thoughts on the work "Space Battleship Yamato 2199" in general?
Yamaji: Because Yamato is a work that I have loved since junior high school, I have always been very emotional about it. However, I think this new work is very delicate in the details of the depiction, overflowing with everyone's love for "Yamato". Led by the director, all the production staff and voice actors are people who love this work, so this 2199 also carries a tribute to previous works.
In addition, traces of "Revival Yamato" can be seen everywhere in this work, and even those who have not seen this series of works before can enjoy it. The audience has become wider.
Q: The battle plot is also very oppressive.
Yamadera : It's been a long time since the first Yamato (1974) was launched, so the imaging technology has changed. Even when I watched Yamato for the first time, I was impressed by the battle scene and sighed, "How can there be such a great animation", but all in all, the new work is also a very powerful work.
In addition, this work is full of welfare shots. It's rare for Yamato to have so many cute characters in the past. And there are also some sexy plots. I never dreamed that there would be a picture of me taking a shower (laughs).
The plot is also different from the previous style of "Towards Iskander", which is more in-depth and touches on the stories of many characters. However, although the stories of various characters are told, the overall plot is not chaotic. The composition of such a series is fantastic.
Q: Finally, the Yamato series will have infinite possibilities in the future, so as a fan, Mr. Yamadera himself should be looking forward to "Space Battleship Yamato 2199". Can you tell us about the joy of the work from the perspective of a voice actor?
Yamadera: I think it's important to be able to connect with a variety of age groups as Space Battleship Yamato 2199. The Yamato series does not end as a "previous story", and even young anime fans can find this work "very exciting" and willing to look back on the past works. It's a really great work, so I hope that Yamato's momentum will continue.
In addition, what I care about most is the future plot of Desla. In fact, I don't know about the follow-up plot at all. Will he continue to play in the future? Anyway, if I can't appear in this work in the future, but the work continues to expand, it will make people feel lonely. That's why sometimes I think, "If only my role was from Yamato's side" (laughs).
Q: Actually, there's no direct depiction of Desla's death.
Yamatera: From a personal point of view, I hope he will be able to appear again and show more charisma to the audience.
