Interview with the author of "The Shape of Sound": Every character is my doppelganger

Since it began to be serialized in magazines, the manga "The Shape of Sound" has aroused strong reactions from all walks of life. Recently, this work was officially announced in the 7th volume of the single book. The manga once won the "This manga is amazing!" 2015 "The boy won the first place in the work, and you can see that he has always had a good popularity.

The author, Ryotoki Oima, is the first time to serialize an original feature-length work, and a Japanese media interview was recently conducted about it. Through the interviews, we will learn about the secrets of the creation of the work, as well as the author's own experience.

Delicate, soft serial vein

This work, which won the Newcomer Award, was first serialized in "Bessho Shonen Magazine". A few years later, a remastered version of the short story was published in the "Weekly Shonen Magazine". The work received a strong response at the time, so Shun Lì was officially serialized. So when the serialization was suddenly confirmed, did Daijin feel confused?

"This work is based on a comic I submitted when I was 18 years old. After winning the Newcomer Award, I began serializing the manga version of Okikata-sensei's "Girl in the Shell". The whole process of this work seems relatively gentle. In my mind, I had the feeling that it had been serialized from the beginning. Therefore, after the publication of the short story and the start of serialization, I was ready to face Nishinomiya and Ishida. ”

Drawn at the age of 18, this work reveals the world of children from a very thorough perspective. We have a rough impression that the protagonist Ishida spent his middle school years alone in the cycle of being bullied and bullied, but slowly he realized the existence of his "companions".

I'm sure everyone has wondered, "What is a friend?" The work directly portrays the delicate relationship between adolescents and girls in adolescence. So how did this work, which can shake the hearts of readers in their teens, come about?

"At the time of this submission, I was still living in Gifu. I thought I would come to Tokyo one day, but my parents were against it, so I couldn't do it. However, I had already made up my mind to go to Tokyo, so I wanted to draw something that was only available in Gifu at that time. This is the story around me, school life, and the scenery of Gifu. ”

With a sharp eye of observation, explore the matter of "forgiveness".

Since Daijin's mother was a sign language interpreter, she was very familiar with sign language since she was a child. In addition, her personal experience is fully integrated into the work. One of them is that the author had difficulty adjusting to school life when he was in his teens.

"I got a lot of help from my friends. Thanks to this, I never had any doubts about the concept of 'friend'. However, school life was very painful. The school I went to was a school that cared a lot about tradition. One aspect of this is joint and several liability. No matter what you do, there is an air of joint and several responsibility. This kind of strict school spirit makes me feel that it is very troublesome. I didn't go to school for the last half of the year. I want to paint at home more than I go to school. ”

In addition, the author also has doubts about adults who always make unreasonable demands, and he brings this question to the work. She has had a calm gaze for people since she was a child. And such an old-fashioned vision is also very similar to the sister of Nishinomiya Yuzuru who appears in the work.

"In school life, the attitude of the teachers made me think a lot. Sometimes, boys would play pranks on me and break my things. Although it can be seen that they reflect from the bottom of their hearts, the teacher will not take it seriously at all. Although the children are aware of their mistakes and want to apologize, they are not forgiven. Why is that? ”

No matter who you are, you will experience failure. So how can such a mistake be forgiven? This question is also asked in "The Shape of Sound". In the story, Ishida bullied Nishinomiya and had to change schools because of this. This is a serious mistake that will affect him for the rest of his life. In this regard, what should he do to get the forgiveness of the person concerned and the people around him......

"The moment someone realizes that I'm wrong, I want to be able to forgive them. However, for example, Ishida, who bullied others, neither himself nor the people around him forgave him. ”

However, one answer to this question is now presented in the final volume. The companions who gathered together to make the zuò movie fell into a crisis of separation after learning about Ishida's bullying past. However, because of the actions of Ishida and Nishinomiya, the bond between them is stronger than before.

All the characters are their own doppelgangers

Just as we can think of The Shape of Sound as a microcosm of society, we can also find a real sense of reality in the characters who appear in the work. For example, Miki Kawai, an "honor student" who doesn't know how to read words and looks. Nishinomiya, who thinks that "one qiē is all his own fault", and so on. And what makes people feel interesting is that Naoka Ueno is such a storage zài who can directly express his opinions.

She has this line in Volume 3 "Episode 27 Nasty":

"You don't understand me, either."

Ueno bullied Nishinomiya in a girlish way. And no matter what form it takes, bullying is absolutely unforgivable. However, because it is a child, it also makes people feel a kind of pain.

Just because the seats are close, I am always asked for help, and to be honest, this kind of thing can really feel troublesome. This kind of problem, which is caused by the school's arrangement and the imperfection of the system, is now the responsibility of the children. Therefore, it is natural that children will be dissatisfied. But if you say the truth, these words are "forbidden words".

"Ueno is a character who can deliberately say things that people can't say. She is always in the midst of a rampage, which makes people feel very pitiful. Although it's a virtual character, if you don't even think the character is convincing, then it's still not good, right? As everyone said, the characters who appear in the work are all their own doppelgangers. Therefore, when portraying Ueno, I also had the same painful feelings as Ueno. And the same is true of Ishida and Tomohiro Nagazuki in the same grade...... And the closest to me should be Miyoko Sawara, right? Although it is portrayed from a very ideal form. ”

For Sahara, he was snubbed by the girls because of his relationship with the shelter of the West Palace, and as a result, he chose to give up school. However, because of this painful experience, she was more tolerant than anyone else.

When Ueno, who said vicious words and fell into a state of self-abandonment, said, "We're not friends anymore, are we? When asked, she gently replied, "We're friends." ”

"Because Sawara is under a lot of pressure, he is also a person with a strong ability to resist pressure. She knows very well what kind of girl Ueno is. Even so, she still tolerated the other party. ”

And when we ask the question "What exactly is the definition of a friend?" I believe that the plot of this scene has already given the answer. No one is perfect. And being able to accept the personality of a friend is what can be considered a friend, right?

What is the idea for the next work......?

Daijin has always been obsessed with what he did when he was 10 years old, and he has fulfilled his dream of becoming a manga artist. In addition, she expressed her wish to young people who feel the same way as herself and are troubled by the inability to understand the meaning of school:

"Even when you're not in school, it's very important for the person involved. We have to face the question 'Why don't you go to school?' And hopefully you will be able to come up with your own answers. The only way to be a junior high school or high school student is now. If people can realize the preciousness of this time, then I don't think it would matter if you don't go to school, right? ”

After the end of the series, Daijin is exploring the idea of the next work. So what kind of content does she want to create?

"I watch movies in Tongguò to get creative. Before the Shape of Sound awarded, I had also drawn some fantasy works. Now I need to spend time thinking about the question: What exactly did I want to draw at that time? ”

Now, the news of the release of the theatrical version of the anime has also been confirmed. Let's look forward to this theatrical version and Daijin's new manga!
