House Power Daily UP! Interview with rookie voice actor Kana Yuki

Every year, a large number of newcomers emerge in the Japanese voice actor industry, and for this reason, the Japanese media specially produced a program called "New Voice Actor Illustrated Guide". The show interviews and reports on some of the most promising rookie voice actors, to understand the behind-the-scenes stories of their entry into the industry, and their prospects for the future. In the latest issue of the "Rookie Voice Actor Guide", we will introduce Kana Yuki, who has performed well in works such as "Extremely Black Brünnhilde" (Kashiwagi Service) and "The Sword Dance of the Elven Messenger" (Lislet Lauren Frost).

Q: First of all, would you like to tell us about your desire to become a voice actress?

Yuki: Okay! Actually, I don't really remember why I wanted to be a voice actor. However, in the graduation book of elementary school, it was written that "I want to become a voice actor". I've had a bad temper since I was a child, and even when I'm praised by others, I always reply, "That's not the case!" "This kind of tsundere character is cute in the second dimension, but it is a very troublesome type in the third dimension (laughs). But I don't know why, if it's my voice that people compliment, then I'll be very frank with this point of view and be very happy! That's why I wanted to become a voice actor. And at that time, I also loved watching anime.

Q: After that, you graduated from elementary school......

Yuki: When I entered junior high school, I became an otaku through and through. I often talk to my friends about my favorite works and draw things with great interest. Now that I think about it, it's obvious that I'm a dead house (laughs).

Q: So, what happened to you after you went to high school......?

Yuki: My home level has improved even further. But this time it was the game that got me hooked. After school, I would run to the game center and play until the evening before coming home. That's how often I go every day.

Q: Every day!?

Yuki: Yes. I was keeping a diary at the time, so I tried to count how many times I had been there. It turned out that I had been playing at the game center for 500 days in a row (laughs). Even if I just go shopping, I spend Chinese New Year's Eve, New Year's Day and Christmas there. I mainly play some music games at the game center in my hometown. Ah, even though I'm always playing games, I'm also studying hard, right? (laughs)

Q: Does the local game center feel like a "home yard"?

Yuki: That's right! The store I frequented was near the station, and because I had a good relationship with the clerk, I felt like a place to relax.

Q: After that, you gradually embarked on the path of voice actor?

Yuki: That's right. As I continued to move forward on the path called "Otaku", I couldn't help but think, "When I graduate from high school, I want to become a voice actor." However, at that time, I participated in some auditions for singers or voice actors, and the people who reviewed me said, "You're not fit to be a voice actor." "Since my singing voice was well received, I did some vocal training in private and improved my singing skills. But to be honest, I'm already in a state of semi-abandonment for voice actors. However, after a while, I realized that I hadn't worked hard enough to become a voice actor. So I decided: if you really find that you have no talent after working hard, then give up completely. Finally, I went to study at the Japan Commentary Acting Research Institute.

Q: What was Yuki-san's first job as a voice actress?

Yuki: I played a character in a game. Since I didn't audition, I was a little surprised when I was told about the voice work. When I got home, I looked at the character's drawing, and the joy finally came to me: "I'm going to dub this kid!" And when I realized, "I'm a voice actor," I couldn't help but cry.

Q: Starring in "The Sword Dance of the Elves" is the first time that Yuuki has voiced an important role in TV animation. Can you tell us a little bit more about the character of Lislet Lauren Frost?

Yuki: Although Lislet is a strong and aggressive eldest lady, she is very helpful in nature, and she is a very gentle girl. Although none of us admit it to "にーそっくすす" (a group composed of voice actors Kido Yubuki, Yuki Kana, Shizuka Ishigami, Saori Onishi, and Ai Kakuma), I still think there are some similarities with her. For example, not very frank and so on. It's also my favorite role since reading the original, so I only tried to play Lislet when I auditioned.

Q: Why don't other people admit this (laughs)?

Yuki: According to them, the only thing Lislet and I have in common is that I have long hair (laughs).

Q: I put a qiē chip on the role of Lislet, and I auditioned. It's sure to make you happy.

Yuki: Yes. It was also the first role I got through the guò audition, and I was overjoyed when I was notified. In fact, I never had the opportunity to audition before, and I thought about whether to give up altogether. Before I got this audition, I was upset. And when the agent told me the news of the success, I didn't know what to say (laughs). But on the train home, I cried anyway. I'm such a good cryer (laughs).

Q: Yes, yes (laughs). But you're always crying (laughs).

Yuki: I'd feel shy if I cried with joy in front of others (laughs). But if I get provoked, I'll cry even in front of my agent (laughs). I was also told before, "Don't cry~" (laughs)

Q: Speaking of which, which song is your favorite?

Yuki: Well, of course, it's still the first recorded song "Sacrifice のエレメンタリア". This is also a song that I put a lot of emotion into. And "Matsuri のエレメンタリア" is the first time everyone has practiced dance together, and the first work to be performed in front of the public, and the meaning is even more different. It reminds me of the emotion I was when I decided to play Lislet, and I still feel like I'm still excited when I hear it.

Q: Do you have any favorite lyrics?

Yuki: Speaking of your favorite lyrics, it's in the ending song of this work, "Elven Sword Dance Festival". "The Arrow of Ice, which moves forward with trust and firm awareness", gave me a great feeling. Lislett-chan's nickname is also "Ice Demon Lislet". I had a period of troubles, but the encounter with Lislett-chan through Guò put my worries behind and I decided to continue on the path of voice actor. And singing this line made me feel the weight of this encounter.

Q: So, I'd like to ask Ms. Yuki about herself......

Yuki: So how about we talk about mahjong?

Q: Mahjong! Why did you get into this?

Yuki: I happened to watch an anime about mahjong. Although I don't know much about this thing, I feel like "draw!" Mahjong terms like that sound pretty cool. This is the so-called "unconscious" (laughs)! This kind of thought of the second disease made me want to move. I also wanted the opportunity to shout "Draw!" After that, I downloaded an online mahjong game and played it in a daze without understanding the rules, and it took me about 3 months to learn it. I have some female mahjong masters among my friends, so I also had the opportunity to touch physical mahjong and immediately became hooked. I went and bought a cheap set of mahjong myself (laughs). I often play mahjong alone in my room (laughs).

Q: Mahjong is also a game.

Yuki: That's right. Basically, I think it's a reflection of my game-madness. For a while, I was addicted to online games, and I played all kinds of games like FantasyEarth Zero, Phantasy Star 2, and REDSTONE. For a while, my friend in Sanyuan called out to me, "Let's go have a meal?" However, I refused with the excuse that "I'm sorry, my companion is still waiting for me to ......" (laughs). Someone complained, "You're a fool, aren't you?" (laughs)

Q: What's your favorite game to play lately?

Yuki: Recently, I started a board game club with people I know. In this department, what poker, UNO, simulation games...... You can play as long as it's a game. At first, there were only 2~3 people, but now there are about 30 people. When it was time to rest, we shouted to our friends, "Let's play together!" "(laughs) Before, we gathered a lot of people and went to a park to play the "wild man-wolf game". Play from the morning until the last train! And the venue is just a plastic sheet (laughs). The human wolf game is a kind of "sound" RPG in the field of board games, so some of the voice actors of the predecessors are very good at playing this (laughs).

Q: Speaking of which, do you have any voice roles that you want to be?

Yuki: Yes, there are a lot of people I want to look forward to. First of all, the predecessor of the firm, Ms. Yui Horie. Whether it's as a voice actor or as an ordinary person, she makes me respect. There's also Miss Saori Hayami. Miss Hayami's character and acting skills make people like it unconditionally. In addition, my Venerable Master, Mr. Ikuya Sawaki, is also one of them. He worked as a lecturer for 2 years when I was in the training school, and he cultivated my own characteristics. If it weren't for Mr. Sawaki, I wouldn't be where I am today. I would be very happy if I learned a little bit about Mr. Sawaki's acting skills.

Q: What impressed you the most about Mr. Sawaki's teachings?

Yuki: He keeps saying "no charisma". Even if you act well, if you can't show that tempting momentary charm, your acting skills can only be said to be a failure. He believes that the audience just likes this kind of momentary touch, and if it can't move them, then it is meaningless. And in the two years of study, when he praised me for the first time, I was so excited that I wanted to cry again.

Q: Finally, can you tell us what kind of voice actor you want to be in the future?

Yuki: With the role of Guò Lislet, I felt like I had taken my first step as a voice actor. In the future, I want to play various roles and challenge characters with different attributes. My dream in this life is to feel no regrets for my life when I am dying. Even though it's hard right now, I hope to be able to cheer myself up and believe that I will succeed one day. Even if it seems insignificant, it is those humble experiences that have shaped me who I am today, and I want to be able to say, "With this experience, my life is amazing." But if there's a more realistic dream, it's that I want to be able to hold an exclusive solo event (laughs)!

Whether it's a handshake or an autograph session, I hope to have time to chat with the fans who support me. It is because of you that I am able to stand here. I hope to further appreciate this sense of reality through the guò exchange. Now I'm going to work hard to get that opportunity.

Q: Thank you for your time today!
