In one episode of the comic book, several members of the Avengers, including Hawkeye, Black Panther, Black Widow, Wonder Man, and the X-Men, appear on the Letterman show. They are ambushed by only one villain, a weak villain who tries to shoot them using a laser weapon. It was Letterman who saved the accident by slamming the scoundrel's head with a massive doorknob.
