Interview with Mamoru Miyano: A new song recorded in the United States
Voice actor and singer Mamoru Miyano's 11th single disc "BREAKIT! is already on sale. This is his first new album after about 9 months after "NEWORDER". For the first time, the album contains 4 songs, incorporating elements of R&B and disco music, and it also includes new songs recorded in the United States! Mamoru Miyano, who is getting better and better, can bring different surprises to fans every time he returns, so let's take a look at his new album and recent situation in the following interview.
[Try it with STY and make a new rock]
――Title song "BREAKIT! is a powerful song, as if someone was pushing me from behind. Did the animation producer have any requirements for this song?
Miyano: Thank you! This song is the theme song of the TV anime "Card Battle Pioneer G", and I was really happy when I first heard that we could work together. Because it was a new series, the animator wanted to try something new, so I combined the theme of the work with my own ideas to bring a song that could express the sense of galloping and the momentum of the future. The animation producer said that if he could, he wanted to add some game language, so "STANDUP" and "TRIGGER" were perfectly integrated into the lyrics by STY. In terms of music, I wanted to do something new, and STY, which I'd worked with in the past on dance and electronica, wanted to create a new rock song.
――What do you think is the most indispensable element of "rock 'n' roll"?
Miyano: I said to TRY at the time, "Let's rock together," but I didn't really know what the difference between rock and non-rock music was. Prior to this song, TRY and I had also collaborated on electronic-style dance music and BPM fast songs, and found that the sense of galloping was the intensity of the song. Of course, when you add an electric guitar sound, it becomes tougher and more manly, but I think whether it's EDM or rock varies from person to person. I told SÙ about this point of view, and I vaguely said, "I can definitely do it" (laughs)! However, he also felt very much about it, which strengthened my confidence.
――When you first got the song from STY, did you have a rock 'n' roll feel?
Miyano: Well...... The DEMO I got from TRY is very close to the final finished version, and it is very graphic. The humming is also sung by TRY himself, and he gave me a lot of guidance during the recording, and he is a singer who is very easy to get close to. On the day of the recording, we discussed how to sing with a murmuring feeling, and how to express new characteristics.
――Is there anything that stood out to you in your discussions with STY?
Miyano: One of the words that stood out to me was "I originally wanted to write the theme song of an early morning anime that would make children's blood boil, but as soon as you sang it, it suddenly became a hero." "I don't know why I did this myself, but I said it because I was moved, so I really felt that what we were pursuing was the same.
――How did you choose the location for the MV?
Miyano: "BREAKIT! I wanted to shoot it in "a place in Japan that has an American feel", so I searched everywhere for the location, and I found it...... That's the Arizona of Ibaraki (laughs)! I'm standing in the Arizona wilderness dressed as a band, and such a handsome picture has been filmed in the MV, please be sure to watch it!
[The recording in Los Angeles made me realize what "meritocracy" is]
――I heard that this new album also includes songs recorded in the United States.
Miyano: The second track, "Magic", was recorded at an established studio in Los Angeles. The U.S. is really exciting and everything you see is fresh. The mood is happy!
――What was the reason for writing this song?
Miyano: I wanted to write a dance song that would stir up the atmosphere of the concert and at the same time be cool in the R&B style, so I asked Jin Nakamura, who has written many good songs for me. It was Jin who invited me to record in the United States, and I was very happy to be able to record abroad with him. For me, it's a very meaningful song.
――What kind of communication did you have with Jin about this song?
Miyano: Actually, going to Los Angeles to record is Jin's suggestion, and he works not only in Japan but also in the United States. I've been cared for by him since my debut, and I've worked with him for many wonderful moments when I first started writing lyrics...... Every time I recorded and had a meeting, he taught me a lot of things and I learned a lot. Last year, when I recorded "Identity," the title song of my fourth album "PASSAGE," Jin said to me, "Miyano, the job of a singer is to constantly export to the outside world, so you have to make sure that you have time to import new things. "It's okay to just take a break and recharge, but you can also get in touch with some entertainment that you have never been exposed to before, listen to the music works of various singers, and discover that "there is still this way of singing" and learn. Be moved and inspired.
――Why did you go to Los Angeles?
Miyano: During that time, Jin had a lot of jobs in Los Angeles and other places, so he invited me to go to Los Angeles too, and let's go and see a lot of things and record together, so it's great to get new inspiration."
――What a happy invitation!
Miyano: yes, Jin was very happy just saying that. Even though I'm still so immature, Jin has come to see me as a singer and is mentoring me...... I can't thank him enough for that thought alone. However, it is certainly not easy to go to the United States, right? So, I'm really grateful to the staff who worked so hard to help me make time to go to the U.S. to make that happen. The experience in the U.S. was a very rewarding first step for me.
[I also go to musicals in my spare time]
――How did you feel when you actually recorded it?
Miyano: In general, the recording method is very powerful. For example, when checking the recording effect, the staff will say, "Let's sing a cappella first......
――"Magic" is a song with a lot of lyrics and a fast tempo, so it must be difficult to sing a cappella suddenly......
Miyano: To be honest, I was really "Huh?!" For a moment (laughs). It was stressful to sing a song that wasn't quite finished yet, but I learned a lot from it. I take cappella singing for granted and can't do it because the studio is of a very high standard, and I have the confidence to challenge myself and want to sing my best to the best I can.
――The melody gently drifts into your ears, and it is a song that makes you feel comfortable.
Miyano: Yes, this song is just right in terms of melody and lyricism, and it's very charming. Amon Hayashi, who is in charge of the lyrics, brings a sense of exaltation with a poetic form of expression, which is exactly what I wanted!
――Did this trip to the U.S. spark any new desires in you?
Miyano: Of course! Whether as an entertainer or as a singer, I want to broaden my possibilities. Don't limit your possibilities, just keep pushing the envelope. My experience recording in the U.S. inspired me deeply and made me record good songs.
――What are you doing other than recording and filming?
Miyano: I also have time off to see the palm prints of celebrities at the Chinese Cinema in Hollywood, and I look at the logo of Hollywood from afar (laughs). Also, I went to see a musical, which was a great opportunity to recharge. At an old theater called "Pantages Theatre", just across the street from the Chinese theater, I watched the stage version of "GHOSTTHEMUSICAL" from the movie "Ghost Love". Sure enough, watching the musical live was shocking, and I felt the power of the American entertainment industry, so touched!
――I think there's a lot of good food over there, right? What food have you been indulging in lately?
Miyano: It's not like it's recent, maybe it's because as I've gotten older, I've come to think that mushrooms are actually very tasty. I didn't like it very much before, but now I like it very much. I was touched by the deliciousness of the oyster mushrooms. "It's not a mushroom, it's meat!" So, I want to eat Matsutake mushrooms this year! Eat whole! In fact, it's surprisingly hard to have the opportunity to eat whole! The staff told me that there is a place where I can eat delicious matsutake tempura, and I must try it (laughs).
[Cute and sweet songs written for the ** festival]
――Is there anything you'd like to say about the song "MarshmallowLove"?
Miyano: The third song, "MarshmallowLove", is a healing song written for a nationwide tour that will be held between the Festival and the White Festival. Because it's a song that's sweet and light, I'm eager to sing it in a voice that's both relaxing and narrative.
――The cost of writing this song, Jimi is your old partner, right?
Miyano: Yes, I've been working with cost since my debut. I often get new songs from her. She writes very well every time, really appreciated it. Actually, I got this song not long ago. It's a very cost-effective style, and it's a song with a very gentle atmosphere. I've always wanted to "try this style", but it's hard to get a chance to sing such a sweet and cute song. Coincidentally, the next concert tour will start after the release of this single disc, and the concert will start a few days after the **Festival, and the White** Festival will end in a few days...... The timing was so coincidental (laughs)! So, having such a cute song will definitely make the listeners even more happy. So it was included.
――However, the content is cute, but the style is mature R&B, and it is a real dance song.
Miyano: You're so keen (laughs). Actually, it's a little bit fused. It was originally supposed to be a narrative poem style, but the arrangement was slightly changed to help stir up the atmosphere of the scene. Also, I'm a little obsessed with this song, and the theme setting is very strict. In order to express the world view of the world of the song Yan sù, I tried to sing it in a gentle voice as much as possible. That's the key to the song.
――Did you already have the lyrics when you did the demo?
Miyano: Yes. Actually, the demo was sung by women, and at first I was worried about "whether I can do it myself" and "whether I can sing it well", but I still wanted to challenge the wonderful song worldview created at a cost. The focus of this song is the protagonist's fluttering mood like a juice gummy, and I tried to convey his happiness.
――The fourth song, "VOICE", is a psychedelic dance song that is very personal.
Miyano: Actually, this song was originally written for me by TSUGE, but when I was asked to sing the theme song of the game "PRINCEOFSTRIDE", I thought it would be a perfect fit, so I revised it and sublimated it to a version that is closer to the game's world view. On the basis of respecting the worldview of the game, I incorporated my ideas and finally completed this song with a sense of galloping. The theme of the game is a virtual sport called "STRIDE", which is constantly jumping over obstacles set up in the streets and doing relay races, so I tried to add the sound of breathing, and I refined and improved it to come up with this song.
――Do you have any requests from the game producers?
Miyano: There are a lot of requests for lyrics. The theme and stage of this work are "summer", and in the end, this worldview is expanded by UCIO.
――Do you have any requirements for the lyrics?
Miyano: One of the key elements of this game is the "VOICE" in the title of the song. The athletes who appear on the stage use "VOICE" to cheer for the girl who is the protagonist of the game. In addition, "VOICE" is also very important to me...... Therefore, I hope that the mood of "guiding others with sound and saving others with sound" can coincide with the worldview of the game. It's important to get your ideas out there and resonate with the audience...... As a result, a lot of these thoughts of mine are incorporated into this song.
[Please pay attention to the new album cover and concert tour]
――You mentioned the concert tour, how are you preparing now?
Miyano: Right now, I only have a very hazy feeling in my mind (laughs). Every time an idea comes to mind, it's a hard fight, and after the concert, I'm always worried about "what should I do next time?" and rack my brains until the end to squeeze the idea out. I have a lot of thoughts in my heart to get to this point, and my heart is actually very enthusiastic. So I have to take it seriously and convey my ideas to the rest of the staff. However, as I said earlier, because there are both ** and white ** festivals during the tour, I have been thinking about how to express the song "MarshmallowLove". Please look forward to it!
――Finally, would you like to say a few words to the reader?
Miyano: There is the title song "BREAKIT! There is also "Magic", which was recorded in the United States, and this single disc includes 4 songs for the first time. The style and expression of each song are different, which can bring everyone different enjoyment. Also, the cover photo is one that I took with all my might! It's been decided to pick and choose, so I hope you can pay attention to this cover.
