Chapter 211: Ph.D. students in NB Labs
Something big happened to the Soviet "Big Brother"! Ding Aiguo, who had just taken up his post, but was laid off again because the experimental workshop was assigned to the NB laboratory, was more anxious than anyone else.
What is really happening in Moscow will not be known until the evening when you watch the news broadcast. The two major television stations in Hong Kong do broadcast broadcasts, but the broadcasts are broadcasts after all, and the reports are not comprehensive, and they are all spoken in Cantonese, so they can only look at the images and not understand a word.
The most comprehensive and timely is BNB International.
Satellite receivers have been installed in the NB Industrial Park, and there are many people who are proficient in English, but considering that it cannot affect people's work, Ding Aiguo took Wu Xiufeng and Zhang Shuren early in the morning and rushed to the beach villa where the satellite receiver was also installed, and asked Zhang Hui, who had just returned from Hong Kong in the morning, to be a translator and watch the live broadcast of the BNB international channel.
The day that has just passed, the Soviet "State Emergency Committee" was stunned that no major action was taken. So much so that Yeltsin's supporters took to the streets in defiance of the curfew, and the number grew rapidly. The armored forces outside the Houses of Parliament either defected or were "occupied" by the citizens, and the Emergency Committee missed the worst moment while waiting.
As soon as Zhang Hui finished translating an interview, he said with hatred: "The emergency committee seems to be powerful, but in fact it is as fragile as paper. Not only is there no strong man, but they also have their own ghosts, wolves and dogs can't get up, and they lack confidence.
The "Letter to the People" is simply ridiculous, first saying that 'Gorbachev's perestroika has reached a dead end' and then saying that 'he was dismissed for health reasons'. Shameful answers, contradictory to themselves. It's obviously an illegal act. but they prefer to put on the cloak of legitimacy.
A coup d'Γ©tat is not a dinner party! I want to step into history. But I can't take a step, if I go to the end in the dark, even if it is illegal, I will continue to do it with my neck. As long as you hold the authority, everything that is not lawful becomes legal. Seventy years after the founding of the Soviet Union, how many things are really legitimate? β
I really can't talk to them together, and after being a translator for a long time, Zhang Hui is really tired. got up and said with a smile: "Uncle Ding, Uncle, Uncle Zhang, the three of you sit first, and I'll go upstairs to see the long river." β
My son understands English, but as the executive director of NB Electric Group, he has no time to be a translator for him every morning. The daughter-in-law also understands English, but she needs to recuperate after giving birth, so she can't be a translator either.
Zhang Hui's words made Ding Aiguo's eyes light up, and he pointed upstairs and said with a smile: "Changhe is a college student, he must know English, go ahead." See if he's done, and let him come down to watch TV with us when he's done. β
When her daughter-in-law Chen Baolin and her son Ding Wenming got married. From here, I moved back to a new house closer to the company. The room had only been empty for a few months, and Chen Changhe, the son of Chen Shikang, a subordinate of Zhang Yuanchao, moved in and got along with Wu Xiaolian, who had never returned to his home.
Cultivating feelings, these elders are optimistic.
The children of cadres, graduated with a bachelor's degree, and looks like a talent, and the Chen family said that they will have two children in the future, one surnamed Chen and the other surnamed Wu, so Wu Xiucheng, the director of the furniture factory and the decoration boss, has no opinion.
It's just that in Chen Changhe's work, he put forward a request that surprised everyone.
Today's college students are state cadres as soon as they come out, but the treatment of state cadres is really not very good. What's more, he was assigned to his hometown in Jiangnan, thousands of kilometers away from the Special Economic Zone, and Boss Wu had money, but he didn't want his daughter and future son-in-law to suffer the slightest grievance.
At first, I wanted them to take over the furniture factory and decoration business, but I thought that Chen Changhe was a serious college student, and I felt that it was a bit overkill; And NB Electric Group is making a big adjustment, what to do in line with international standards, college students like him also need to start from scratch.
After thinking about it, he finally thought of a job with identity, status, and face: to go to the NB laboratory as a R&D personnel, and to be a professional counterpart.
Among the juniors, there are three who can be admitted to university: Chen Baolin, Zhang Lin and Chen Changhe.
Chen Baolin is a junior college student, and she is studying foreign trade, so she naturally can't do research; Zhang Lin has studied at several universities from home to abroad, and is currently studying for an MBA, and will not engage in research in the future.
Chen Changhe graduated with a bachelor's degree in applied physics, has a good mathematical foundation and basic experimental skills, and masters the basic application knowledge, basic experimental methods and techniques in electronic technology, computer technology, optical fiber communication technology, biomedical physics, etc. Able to engage in scientific research, teaching, technology development and application, management and other related fields such as physics, post and telecommunications, aerospace, energy development, computer technology and application, optoelectronic technology, medical treatment, automation control and other related fields.
Their relatives and friends who enjoy the dividends of NB Electric's development have money, but few of them are educated, so Wu Xiucheng's request was approved by everyone as soon as it was put forward.
The lab isn't that easy to get into!
Four years ago, I began to recruit new people with graduate degrees, and after entering, I have to go through a year of vocational skills training, and if I want to become a researcher in the NB laboratory, I have to work hard like Zhang Lin's classmate Zhu Hui at Hujiang University of Science and Technology.
Wu Xiufeng didn't want to delay the future of his niece and son-in-law, so he hurriedly said: "Director Ding, the children have children's affairs, let's look at it like this." β
Ding Aiguo realized that the request just now was a bit excessive, and said embarrassedly: "Yes, yes, Xiufeng is right, we can look at ours, just have a picture." Xiaohui, you can get busy, leave us alone. β
The study room on the second floor was full of books, some of which were borrowed from the small library of the experimental workshop, some of which were brought back from abroad but did not have time to be delivered to the small library, and some of which were books on business management and finance left by the eldest brother-in-law Liu Siwei.
Most of them are in English, and many of the books even have handwriting left by the charter.
Chen Changhe struggled to see it, the language barrier was one thing, and the main thing was that the content was too profound, and many professional terms I hadn't even heard of when I was in college.
He is a very strong person, and he has always been excellent in character and learning since he was a child.
Before coming to the Special Economic Zone, I always thought that NB Electric was a company that made its fortune by speculation, and the regulations that my parents could not do anymore were just a trendsetter of the times. The reason why there is today. It is completely thanks to the country's reform and opening up policy. I only found out after I came. The actual situation is completely different from what you think.
Managers at or above the level of supervisor in the NB Industrial Park. Most of them have a bachelor's degree or above. NB electrical appliances, NB electricians, NB electrical complete sets of technical personnel, not only have a bachelor's degree or above, but also have assistant engineers, engineers, and even senior engineer titles. After several years of vocational skills training, even the team leader on the production line is a technician.
Applied physics is a very miscellaneous and comprehensive major, learning everything, and in the end not being proficient in anything, even general technical work is not competent. Not to mention going to the NB lab where you are either a doctor or a master.
As for the charter, it's nothing short of a freak. I didn't graduate from junior high school, but I actually achieved so much academically through self-study.
It's too shocking, if it weren't for Wu Xiaolian, who didn't like the temper of the eldest lady in his heart, and saw Wu Xiaolian who was always blushing when he saw him, he really wanted to pack his luggage and go back to his hometown in Jiangnan. Because only after he goes back, can he have a little sense of superiority.
"Changhe, don't always be stuffy in the room, and go out to go around when you're tired of watching." Just thinking about it, Zhang Hui walked in with a smile.
I saw it when I was a child. It is said that his mother said that Sister Zhang Hui hugged him when she went to visit relatives in the army, and Chen Changhe hurriedly got up and said, "Eldest sister." How did you get up? β
"Come up and take a look."
Zhang Hui glanced back at the study that was too familiar to be familiar, pointed to the next door and asked with a smile: "Xiaolian, why haven't I seen her all morning this Sunday?" β
Chen Changhe was very embarrassed to be asked, and hesitated for a while before whispering: "She went to the Linhai Hotel to participate in the training, and she won't be back until the afternoon." β
The group affairs said that it didn't matter, Zhang Hui really didn't know what to do, and asked with a puzzled face: "Training?" Financial staff also need to be trained? β
"Hmm."
Chen Changhe nodded heavily and confirmed: "She told me the day before yesterday that the chief financial officer of the group will teach in person, and all the financial personnel of the Chinese company will participate. β
Not to mention that he doesn't just ask about the affairs of the group, even if he asks, he can't help the future brother-in-law in front of him, after all, the NB laboratory is now under the management of the newly appointed senior principal, and there is a council above, and the academic committees of each department below, even the power to recruit how many people and what kind of people to recruit are delegated to each project team.
Thinking of what her husband said casually before leaving in the morning, Zhang Hui suddenly smiled and said, "Changhe, don't read books yet, accompany my sister to Xiangjiang University." β
"What are you going to do?"
"If you go, you'll know the way." After finishing speaking, Zhang Hui took his arm and left.
It was already 12 o'clock in the afternoon when they arrived at Xiangjiang University, and after a casual meal in a small restaurant outside the school, the two of them squeezed into a large classroom of the Faculty of Science, along with many students from the inner provinces.
Chen Changhe didn't know why, and was about to ask, when he heard a girl wearing glasses in the front row, and said to her companion worriedly: "Han Ying, did you see the boys in the third row, I met them when I went to the shop just now, and they are all from Qing H." There are only 30 places in total, and there are more wolves and less meat, so it seems that our trip is likely to run in vain. β
"There's still a chance to come, but there's no chance to come at all. Don't suffer from gains and losses, it's a big deal to settle for the next best, and directly submit your resume to the human resources department of NB Electric. β
"That's the way it has to be."
The girl with glasses sighed lightly and said helplessly: "It's really untimely, if we had graduated a few years earlier, we would have been able to enter the NB laboratory directly like my senior sister." β
Job fairs?
Chen Changhe understood as if he had been enlightened, and looking at his suddenly realized look, Zhang Hui shook his head slightly. After waiting for about half an hour, a man in his thirties, wearing glasses, a blue plaid shirt and black trousers, accompanied by a middle-aged man who looked like a professor, walked up to the podium with a spring breeze on his face.
"Please be quiet."
The middle-aged man looked at the black head in the lecture hall and said with a smile: "Students, friends, you are very well-informed." It was only decided on Tuesday that the introductory meeting was held, and so many people have come today, and as the deputy dean of the Faculty of Science of Xiangjiang University, I should do my best to be a landlord. But as a teacher, I really can't welcome you, because there are three of you students, and they may lose a chance to enter the NB lab because of you uninvited guests. β
Everyone immediately burst into laughter, Vice President Zhou paused, turned around and said, "Okay." Straight to the point. Next, I would like to invite Dr. Xiong Yongwang, who has just returned from the Leibniz Society in Germany. Let's take a look at some of the NB Labs. β
In order to increase the number of doctoral training places, the Hong Kong and Macao Working Committee has done a lot of work, and even found Mr. Gao Kun, the former president of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, the newly appointed chief scientist of NB Electric Group, the director of the academic committee of NB Laboratory, and the Hong Kong affairs consultant of the Hong Kong branch of New H Society.
ββ¦β¦ As the infrastructure works on Clear Water Bay Peninsula will take three years to complete, the laboratory will borrow sites from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, the University of Hong Kong, the Faculty of Science of the University of Hong Kong and NB Electric (China) Co., Ltd. respectively. Due to incomplete facilities and other reasons, the number of doctoral training places has been reduced from 300 to 90 per year.
With the approval of the laboratory council, the quota for the first recruitment will be allocated according to 5:3:2. There are 45 students from Hong Kong, 27 international exchange students, and 18 from China. The scale is small, but the three departments of the laboratory will enroll students twice a year. At the same time, some teachers who work in schools or research institutes may also recruit doctoral students according to the needs of the project. β
Xiong Yongwang, who had just returned from his studies in Germany, looked around at the crowd and continued in a low voice: "Compared with some universities and research institutes, our admissions process is relatively simple. The research groups or research teams of the three university departments will release the enrollment requirements and some project information in mid-August and mid-January each year. In about a month after the release of the enrollment information, we will accept applications from outstanding students in the world.
After the application deadline, it takes about a month or so to select the best students. After that, interested students will be invited for interviews. Most students are invited to the lab for an interview, and the lab will reimburse the cost of travel and lodging.
The interview lasts for three days, and on the first day, students will be allowed to visit the laboratory, understand the laboratory, understand the scientific research instruments of the laboratory, communicate with supervisors, and communicate with doctoral students and postdoctoral fellows, so that students can have an objective and comprehensive understanding of the NB laboratory.
On the second day, a public report meeting will be organized, and the supervisors will introduce their respective projects, research content and enrollment requirements of the research group. Students who participate in the interview need to publicly introduce their scientific research experience, and each student will have about 8 minutes. The tutor and other students attending the interview will ask questions for about 2-3 minutes.
On the last day, the tutor will conduct a separate interview with the student who is applying for his or her own project, and the purpose of the interview is to increase the mutual understanding between the student and the tutor, and the tutor will re-judge the student, and the student can also re-determine whether he or she likes the topic he is applying for......"
This is the enrollment regulations that President Zhou has just formulated after taking office, and Chen Changhe realized Zhang Hui's good intentions.
But for him, listening to it is also in vain. There are only 18 people recruited in China, and they are recruiting doctoral students, and he is really not qualified to move forward as an undergraduate.
He was disheartened, and the others listened with relish.
Xiong Yongwang seemed to look at Zhang Hui beside him, paused slightly, and then introduced: "Each doctoral student is generally equipped with three supervisors, one supervisor is from the laboratory, and one supervisor is from the university, because the laboratory itself does not have the right to confer doctoral degrees, and doctoral students need to register with the university that awarded the degree in the future.
There is also a mentor from another research institution. It is worth mentioning that the students of NB Lab will ask to visit other research institutions for about three months, and most of the third supervisors are from the schools they will visit in the future.
Generally, within three months of starting the doctoral study, the doctoral student and the supervisor should discuss and determine the other supervisors. Complete the writing of the research plan within six months of the start of the PhD, discuss the details with all supervisors, and obtain the consent of all teachers.
After one year of doctoral degree, doctoral students should report the research progress to the supervisor again and discuss with the supervisor to adjust the future research plan. In the next two years, doctoral students are also required to sit with their supervisors regularly to discuss research progress.
Please note that these exchanges introduced above are very long, profound and specific each time, and they are definitely not going through the motions, which will be very painful for doctoral students. Because the mentors ask all kinds of questions, they have a very wide range of knowledge, and they are also three mentors with different professional backgrounds sitting together and communicating.
Of course, doctoral students can also discuss with their supervisors at any time if they have any questions. After all, the main responsibility of the supervisors is to ensure that the research of doctoral students is feasible and that the research plan is completed within the specified time......
Unlike other countries, our doctoral students are on scholarships, which is not much different from signing jobs, and there is no tax, and it is not a salary. Each person has 1,200 US dollars per year and three months for attending conferences, summer courses and other forms of study, and other funds can be used to reimburse the transportation and accommodation expenses of the three months or so.
But we have an exit mechanism! At the beginning, the contract will be signed with the student who passes the interview, and the second two-year contract will be renewed by the tutor based on the performance of the first year.
The last thing to say is that the NB laboratory has gathered many of the world's best scientists and young scientists, has the world's most advanced scientific research facilities and equipment, and has a strong free scientific research and academic atmosphere. As a person who has come before, I would like to advise you to make some preparations and sincerely welcome you to make your dreams come true and become our colleagues. (To be continued......)
