"Teenage Hollywood": The story behind the icon

Another TV anime "Shonen Hollywood-HOLLYSTAGEFOR49" with the theme of idol boy groups has been broadcast since July and has attracted the attention of female audiences. Unlike other idol animations, the boy group in this work is not a dazzling idol group, but an obscure small group that is still developing. Compared with the shining acting performances, this work pays more attention to the authenticity of the characters and stories, so that everyone can see the other side behind the light of the idols. So, what is the charm of this work in the eyes of the voice actors? And how did they get their roles? You'll find out after reading the following interview.

■ Teenage Hollywood member

Kazamisa (CV: Ryota Osaka): When I was working part-time, I was photographed by the president, and I felt that idol activities were like an upgraded version of club activities.

Ikuma Kashigi (CV: Kakihara Tetsuya): After dropping out of high school, he became an idol trainee and the captain of the teenage Hollywood. Clumsy and reliable.

Nozomi Saeki (CV: Daiki Yamashita): A talented child star who starred in morning dramas when he was a child, but later he was gradually forgotten.

Taiki Tomii (CV: Shota Aoi): I really love singing and immerse myself in music. Dream of becoming a world-class star.

Haruru Maiyama (CV: Kensho Ono): A teenager who always has a smile on his face, he grew up in a welfare home and worships the last generation of teenagers Hollywood.

■ Both individual and realistic! An idol man of equal size

Q: This is the story of a group of new idols. What was your first impression when you first came across this game?

Osaka: This work is about the world of idols, and everyone has their own "representative lines" during the audition, so I don't know how to perform at all.

Kakihara: Whether it's hot-blooded or shiny, it's hard to express the worldview if you're not sure, and we're trying to do these things at the same time. At the time of the audition, in addition to the natal role, other roles were auditioned. Later, we were adopted from the perspective of overall balance.

Ono: Actually, they asked me, "Would you like to try all the roles?" (laughs).

Kakihara: Actually, in addition to the five people I auditioned for, there was also the president (CV: Daisuke Nanikawa) (laughs).

Q: What are the charms of each character?

Osaka: When I first saw Sa, I thought he was handsome and tall. Among the 5 protagonists, it's a very orthodox hero.。 When I auditioned, one of the lines I had to read was, "Your universe is my universe." My universe is your universe". I thought to myself, this kid would still say such things (laughs). However, in fact, he is a very ordinary child, and he is the character who can resonate with the audience the most. At first, I thought that Sa was so ordinary in a group of characters with distinct personalities that he didn't feel like he had any sense of zài at all, but then something gradually appeared that made me feel that he was not ordinary. For example, when other members are troubled, he will complain and say, "Hey, what's there to worry about? ”

Aoi: It doesn't make people feel annoying.

Osaka: Yes, all in all, he's a very pure person. It's hard to see this charisma of him without the other 4 people. From this point of view, his friends have helped him too much. He gave full play to his absorptive capacity and is in the process of trying to change himself. However, in our eyes, he is still a person who can easily enter his own world in a monologue (laughs).

Yamashita: As soon as Sa's monologue appears, the story will come to an end (laughs).

Obaka: No matter who the episode focuses on, the one who ends the episode must be Sa.

Kakihara: Although the person who made the summary was Sa, the captain was a raw horse (laughs). Ikuma is the oldest of the members, and he used to be a delinquent teenager. Therefore, he is a very, very reliable, the so-called "very manly captain". However, in fact he is a bit clumsy and natural, and is a bullied character. From this it can be seen that he is a great measure.

Aisaka: Each character has a different feeling than it did at first. I originally thought that Sa was a more ** child, but Toshimasa Kuroyanagi supervised and said that "he is an honest and cheerful child", which completely subverted the image of Sa in my mind. Also, Sa couldn't do it more than I thought. Basically, it was discovered because of the handsome face, and the technical aspect is not up to par. Especially when I sing, I don't know how bad I have to sing, it's very hard (laughs). All the characters will gradually grow up in the story, and the person who has grown most obviously physically should be Sa.

Kakihara: Everyone is still growing up, and you can see that they are changing little by little. Although each of them has their own troubles, I think the life of Sa and Raw Horse is the most normal.

Hirosaka: The characteristics of the other 3 characters are very obvious.

Kakiwara: It was only after Ikuma met Sa that he had time to discuss the future, and perhaps this had a great influence on him. Aside from his height and appearance, his strength is the closeness that makes people feel ageless. No matter how Heesung and Haruto bully him, he just "Huh? "One glance, and the next moment it was back to its original state (laughs). He used to be a bad teenager, probably because others thought he was easy to fit into, I think so.

Yamashita: He's one of the most popular characters!

Kakihara: But some people say that he wears sportswear too dirty (laughs). Perhaps among these 5 people, Shengma is spiritually a mascot-like being. The façade is filled with a star and a tree.

Yamashita: Xixing used to be a child star and has been in the entertainment industry for a long time, so although he is the youngest, he has the highest self-esteem, and at first glance he seems to be cold. However, he also has an emotional side that matches his age, and he doesn't seem to understand himself and feels uneasy. This kind of contradiction is where his charm lies! As the plot progresses, he gradually becomes more honest, and I hope everyone can follow his growth.

Q: What about the big tree?

Aoi: He grew up in a welfare home, and he was an extroverted teenager who admired the previous generation of "teenage Hollywood". He is really kind to people like a puppy, and he always has a smile on his face, this is his "real side". However, he sometimes has a sentimental expression as he recalls his former teenage Hollywood. The difference between before and after should be worth paying attention to. Of course, he's still laughing most of the time!

Ono: The other four people have their own personalities, and the most realistic person in the troupe is probably Haru. Isn't it often said that there is a high school student in every class who can't fit into the group...... He's just been discovered and debuted, so he hasn't experienced any tests, but it may appear in future stories. It's not yet the number of episodes centered on him, so even I don't know what his inner world is like.

Kakiwara: I just talked about "having personalities," but if you look at the substance from the surface, you can see that all five of them are very ordinary children, and you think that there are people in the world who think this way. In reality, there should be children like Sa, and there should be child stars like Xixing. This sense of realism is the great charm of this work.

■ The performance of the natural guò can express the individuality

Q: In this work, the troubles of boys of their age are depicted, such as "what is life" and "what are dreams?"

Hirosaka: Yes. This is a realistic work that resonates strongly with people. So, we will also try to speak in a normal way.

Kakihara: I'm close to Osaka and Ono's voices, and if I really play in my true colors, you probably won't be able to hear who's voice. However, since it is a story about the growth of a teenager, it would be strange if the characters were portrayed too differently.

Osaka: Yes, so don't be too deliberate, try to be natural, listen carefully to what the other person is saying, and then respond honestly.

Kakihara: We wanted to keep the character's individuality, but there were many scenes that we couldn't perform. This makes it easiest for us...... It may be mistaken to say this, but we will try to be as plain as possible. This should be the charm of this work.

Q: Are the other 3 characters like this?

Hirosaka: Yes. We talked about it during the break in the recording, and all five of us felt that we had similarities with the characters. Sometimes it's hard to tell if it's a character or an actor (laughs). It's because we act so realistically that we can express the personality of the character. Yamashita was excited when he said that Nozomi's representative slogan, "I live in the country of stars."

Kakihara: I mistakenly thought that Yamashita had been a child actor before. In fact, it was because Xixing had been a child star before that he made a mistake. When I talk about this when I record other works, everyone else complains that I'm not the one (laughs).

Osaka: The pure and straightforward place of the big tree also resembles Aoi. Haru is a little loose and weak, and his appearance is also a bit similar to Ono.

Kakihara: You too. At first glance, it doesn't seem to talk much, it's cool, but when you encounter something, you become enthusiastic. It's a lot like Sa.

Kakihara: Acting naturally becomes very similar. There are probably not many places where so many young voice actors gather and everyone works with their imaginations. From this point of view, "Young Hollywood" is really a work worth participating in. I'm very glad I was able to be a part of it.

■ I didn't expect such a lineup at the audition?!

Q: Did everyone guess when they auditioned that they would win the role they were in?

Hiraka: Well, that's it. I guess if I can play it, I should be able to play a sa or a raw horse. After seeing Yamashita at the audition, I thought, "Ah, this Xixing is definitely not me!" (laughs)

Ono: I've known about "Shonen Hollywood" before, so I have always had a vague idea of wanting to be a part of it. However, the only thing I can be sure of is that Hesung is definitely not me (laughs).

Kakihara: That's what everyone thinks. To be honest, I think I can play it...... It should be able to play spring or Xixing!

Everyone: Wow?!

Kakihara: I can even say that I have a lot of doubts about my role as a raw horse (laughs). It is strange that someone with the motto "Rome was not built in a day" would say something like "a soul like no other". The original scripts of the auditions didn't include the background of the characters, so we didn't know how passionate they were. Also, the role of Ikuma is usually given to an older voice actor, but I didn't expect to be the oldest (laughs).

Aoi: I have a high pitch, and when I auditioned, I felt that I was the most likely to be a hither. In the end, I was really surprised when I heard that it had been decided that I would be paired with a big tree. When I played Xixing, I kept my voice low and didn't have much confidence. However, I think this feeling of confusion may be very suitable for playing the innocent boy who grew up in a welfare home.

Yamashita: I also thought I would be a good fit for Hesei, or Taiki, so I auditioned for the roles of Ikuma and Sa (laughs). However, when the director asked me to "give Xixing a try" during the audition, I was secretly proud (laughs). Xixing best embodies my characteristics, and I am very happy to play him.

Ono: That's how the five of us came to terms with that. Episode 1 should be recorded with a balance that "tries not to overlap the characters."

Kakihara: The feeling of Xixing and Taishu is always very similar.

Hirosaka: On the one hand, we are summarizing and exploring, and on the other hand, as the story progresses, we can act more and more naturally.

Yamashita: The self-introduction in episode 1 is really awkward. However, Xixing had to speak a little more confidently. Now I have to act better, and the pressure is getting bigger and bigger (laughs).

■ Unexpected performance nostalgic and novel animation

Q: What are some of the episodes that have aired that have left a lasting impression on you?

Aoi: AirVoice......

Hiraka: Sure enough, that's it.

Yamashita: Until the end of the episode, the whole episode was a work within a play. Even the passengers are played by us.

Aoi: The situation in the audience before the start of the show is so real, it's like there are actually people coming to Hollywood Tokyo to watch the show, and this is a very new practice. After the recording, even we wanted to watch it.

Kakihara: The cheers of the theater are also very real. It really feels like this idol group is still developing!

Q: The president will also sting your hearts with very spicy speeches.

Yamashita: There's a scene where he scolds his idols for being "a bunch of trash" (laughs).

Ono: He also ridiculed Haru's self-introduction as an example of shame (laughs).

Kakihara: However, as a voice actor, I think the president's words are actually quite right. Many of us have had similar experiences. For those who want to work as voice actors, or who are already voice actors, you may have a lot to think about after watching this anime.

Hiraka: yes......

Q: I really want to know what happened next.

Ono: It hasn't been broadcast yet, but in the future, there will be some things that have not been glorified that people at this age have to think about these things if they want to be idols. These are the highlights.

Kakiwara: If those things were exposed in reality, it would definitely cause a big problem (laughs). "Young Hollywood" delicately portrays the immature side of idols. I added a lot of things that are different from other idol-themed works. Looking forward to their entry into Idol Street.

Hirosaka: "Shonen Hollywood" itself is based on idols, but it exudes a sense of "Showa era". There are many attempts represented by AirVoice in the work. It's a work that has a lot of surprising innovations in the show.

Yamashita: In Episode 7, there is a higher-level attempt to surpass AirVoice!

Kakiwara: Don't start from the middle.

Ono: If you look at it from the middle, you might think that "Shonen Hollywood" is terrible (laughs).

Kakiwara: The musical in episode 7 is to promote the plot through everyone's singing.

Hirosaka: I'm so impressed (laughs).

Kakihara: Only this one episode has not been rehearsed, so I started the official recording directly. It's basically improvisational, and it's impossible to sing the same thing again. This is a magnificent prank brought by the staff and us (laughs)!

Amisaka: Yes, there are no words to describe it other than "prank" (laughs)!

Kakihara: This kind of performance only appears in "Teen Hollywood".

Hirosaka: The entire episode of Episode 5 is a drama within a stage performance, and this episode is also very impressive. Usually works add a plot like "Let's do our best to perform" at the beginning, but this one doesn't have it at all. Each time, there will be practices that are unimaginable in other works. How exactly are we supposed to perform? Try it again and again every time in a pleasant atmosphere.

Q: What do you want people to pay attention to in this work?

Osaka: Although this work tells the story of an idol group, it is not only glamorous on the surface, but also strict and wolf-like behind the scenes. I hope you will pay attention to these places.

Kakihara: There are many places where I overlap with my dream of becoming a voice actor.

Hirosaka: That's right. In this industry, we often feel that "there is such a thing, it does exist", which is very resonant. So I think it's a work that shows the real state of the industry.

Kakihara: Since this is an anime about a male idol group, most of the audience is women, but I hope that men can also watch it. The character setting does not take the handsome route, but has a certain authenticity. There is also a male-specific style in the script that seems to be written by a male student.

Hirosaka: At first, some people may be surprised at how different it is, but when I recommend it to my friends, I say, "Let's just think it's a comedy from the beginning." If you look at it, you will be stuck in it and you will not be able to extricate yourself.

Kakihara: There are all episodes of stage performances, all episodes of musicals, and there will be all episodes of music shows in the future, so it's very interesting like a variety show that incorporates a lot of elements. People of any age will enjoy this work, and I hope you will all check it out!
