――Morning \ Nihon Shin \ News Interview \ Visit Tomino Yuyuki

One of the more popular Gundam works recently is the UC Unicorn, as an orthodox work of the UC era, even after Tomino, the father of Gundam, faded out, he can still strongly feel Tomino's style, after all, it was Tomino who laid the foundation for the huge worldview of the UC era. There are many works by Yuki Tomino, but the works that have been known to ACG lovers of all eras are still Gundam. Although the Gundam works of the new century no longer have a half-dime relationship with Tomino, the three lepers still have to write the words "original Yuyuki Tomino" on the beginning of each film. Many of Tomino's own works end with the death of all the members, and the legendary giant god Idean, who made Zuò before Gundam, has wiped out all mankind. In February, the Asahi Shimbun did an exclusive interview with Yuyuki Tomino, mainly talking about Tomino's own worldview and other issues, in fact, it also talked about the Sino-Japanese fishing \ fish \ island issue, as well as Japan's internal politics \ governance, in general, Tomino's old man's thoughts always give people a gloomy feeling.

Q: You've been creating "giant machine war animations" for almost all the time, why are you so persistent?

Tomino: In order to make this powerful weapon as a giant machine more or less realistic, I can only express it in the form of war, which is the starting point of my creation. My original intention was not to describe war. At the beginning of the creation, my question was very simple: why is the order on the battlefield so absurd, and why should it be obeyed? Why was he able to watch his husband and son go to war? Why can you watch the people around you dedicate themselves to the country? At the time, it was felt that only the consensus of the era could explain these problems.

In World War II, Japanese soldiers could "for the sake of His Majesty the Emperor" and carry out "special attacks" and "jade shattering" (all self-killing attacks); Ordinary people do not advocate so-and-so-and-so, but they can shout the words "traitor" and "traitor"; People close to the past can be called traitors -- this was the consensus of the Japanese at that time.

Since we can now appreciate the error of the consensus of the time, it is not necessarily true that the consensus of all eras is not necessarily correct, not only in wartime.

Q: But in modern society, unreasonable "common sense" like "traitors" obviously doesn't have much influence, right?

Tomino: No, finance is a straightforward example. Exchange rates and stock prices fluctuate in seconds, and there are huge gains or losses. Although it is an unreal world, it is common sense that both markets drive the world.

"Wages should be raised every year" may be true today, but from a macro perspective, the fact is that people are hoping to further expand consumption even more despite knowing that the earth's resources are limited.

This economic common sense has only been formed in the last 5 or 60 years, and it is by no means a natural phenomenon. We take this common sense as a premise for our own lives, so the situation cannot be improved. Even if everyone thinks that there is absolutely something wrong with this understanding, they cannot challenge this "common sense" because of the importance of daily life.

Q: Even if you realize that it is not normal, you still move towards ruin. Is it difficult to change both in terms of war and economy?

Tomino: For example, in the case of Jian, Ge, Zhu, and Dao (called Diaoyu/Yu/Dao in China), if human beings have to survive for another 10,000 years, then the resources of the sea area can only be jointly managed by the neighboring countries for a long time. It is understandable that countries want to monopolize resources, but once it turns into war, then resources will only be further wasted.

The history of mankind can be said to be the history of war, and this has been true so up to the 20th century. However, judging by the increase in the earth's population and the consumption of energy, the era of war between countries to solve problems has long passed. So why hasn't a new "consensus" been formed yet?

Q: You mean that the premise of human existence is the formation of a new consensus?

Tomino: Looking at his grandson, he thought, "If his descendants can continue, then I will be able to rest in peace." If the earth's energy resources are depleted and humanity is extinct in Sun Tzu's generation, then he will die blindly. However, in today's Japanese society, the more common pursuit is the happiness of one's old age. I want you to understand that such an idea can no longer be the basis for moving the world forward, and that we are just one of the world's 7 billion people.

I don't understand, is it necessary for Japan to have a special minister to countermeasure the declining birthrate? If we consider it from the perspective of the limited resources of the earth, then the declining birthrate is definitely expected. If the world's population were reduced to 1/10 of what it is now, then humanity would be able to continue, as was the case hundreds of years ago.

Q: Frankly, that sounds a bit extreme, doesn't it?

Tomino: Indeed, it is imperative to reconstruct the entire world system, including capitalism, capitalism, and righteousness. Even if it can be done in a fictional world, it will not work in a world where realism prevails. Doesn't this just reflect the development of reality in a form that is extremely unrealistic?

The kids who grew up watching the original Gundam are now in their 40s, and I know they've been thinking about how to reflect the central idea of "how humanity should survive" in their work. I learned that it is difficult to make a sudden change in the consciousness of those in power in society, but through the medium of guò animation, it is possible to instill the right ideas in children in their teens.

Q: Do the "Gundam generation" in their 40s and early 50s expect social change?

Tomino: No, Gundam provides the idea, but it doesn't give a way to realize it. Therefore, there is no government in the "Gundam Generation" that can unify the one-party government, and the democratic, the sovereign, and the democratic, democratic, and democratic parties are all the same.

Q: So, where do you start to apply the concept of virtual worlds to displays?

Tomino: I would like to put into practice the management theory of the huge organization that runs the earth. But the larger the organization, the easier it is for the counterculture to start, and there will be gangs. Even on the insignificant planet Earth, different climates and terroirs can give birth to different hearts and religions. It is extremely difficult to rule a planet without understanding this.

Everyone has selfish desires and wants to protect the people who are important to them so that they can live a healthy life all the time. For this, there must be an economic base in any case. When we can't afford to protect each other, all negotiations will break down.

The sequels "Gundam Z" and "Gundam V" depict the civil strife of the Earth Federation and the terrorist regime in the cosmic colonies. In order to pursue reality, I introduced a plot such as the protagonist's mental abnormality, and then I was stuck in a bottleneck and couldn't think of a solution.

Moreover, the real world is like adding insult to injury, with successive wars, terrorist attacks, attacks, etc. I don't know how to try it in the fictional world, why is this happening in the real world? There was a time when I was in a difficult situation psychologically and couldn't create.

Q: In 1999, five years after the end of Gundam V, you created TurnA Gundam, which was active in the distant future of the Gundam era. Compared with the tense relationships between the characters in the past works, the characters on the stage are broad in measurement and calm in bearing. Although there are wars, there is still the possibility of negotiations, and war can be avoided at the last moment. Do you want to say, "If everyone changes, the outcome may change too"?

Tomino: That's right, the protagonist Roland is caught between two camps, and he can't give up the idea that "people on both sides love it". At that time, I wanted to pin my thoughts on him. No matter what the story is, it can't be completely fictional. Even if the character is fictional, his breath must be real, isn't that creation?

Q: Do you think the possibilities that Roland is showing are anything but in the air?

Tomino: If you think with a mind steeped in the common sense of capital, capitalism, and righteousness that only seeks growth, you may only see the end of ruin, but there are still people in the world who don't think so.

If you collect a collection of foreigners who visited Japan from the end of the Edo period to the Meiji period, there is a book called "The Faces of the Lost World". If you read it, you will know that the Japanese people at that time did have a clear face, and even foreigners were able to interact with each other generously, giving people the impression of harmony between young and old.

If that's the case, foreigners won't be wary of Japanese people. The Edo period in Japan was an almost self-sufficient society, and the people were cheerful, welcoming, and happy, and I think the Edo period is very valuable. ”
