The secret to becoming a voice actor! Jasmine Ise also held a talk show
Nowadays, the profession of voice actor has attracted a lot of attention even in public. It can be said that the voice actor is a person who integrates his own life into the discourse. Today's voice actors not only voice anime and play some foreign works, but also hold concerts as singers, bathing in various spotlights. As a result, more and more people are beginning to aspire to this profession. It is currently known that there are about 300,000 people in Japan who aim to become professional voice actors. However, after the debut of the voice actor, it is not easy to get a role through the guò audition and survive in the industry. Recently, voice actress Jasmine Ise also held a talk show for those who want to become voice actors, which has been reported in detail by Japanese media.
■Once you decide that you want to become a voice actor, you must have an unwavering determination
The venue of the symposium was the comprehensive school athuman, a vocational school that has trained many voice actors such as Rii Murakawa and Asuka Okame. The venue was attended by current students and young people who wanted to become voice actors in the future, and the voice actor Mori Kenhisa, who was a lecturer at the school, was in charge of the event as the host.
Ise became interested in animation in 1998 with Princess Mononoke. At that time, she was still in the third grade of elementary school, and she was so fascinated by this work that she went to the cinema a total of 8 times. At that time, she made up her mind: "In the future, I want to become an animation director and make works that can move people like Princess Mononoke." From that time on, she actively watched movies and musicals, and began to study to become a director.
After that, Ise entered junior high school, and then the encounter that changed her fate came. At the time, she enjoyed Fuji TV's "Full Time Hunter" so much that she went to see a musical performed by a voice cast. At the scene, she stumbled upon a stage drama producer who had published a photo of his face in the brochure. So Ise chatted with the other party and talked about the future development. The producer replied, "I can also make zuò animation, so do you want to become a voice actor in the future?" This is also to persuade Ise to enter the voice actor training center. As a result of this encounter, Ise began her path to becoming a voice actor.
The training facility she entered only had one class a week on Sundays. However, even on days when there are no classes, Ise still considers the importance of daily life, so he thoroughly conducts basic activities such as pronunciation practice and speaking fluency training. She also appears to have participated in Shakespeare's plays at the training center and recited Kabuki's work "Wai Lang Dai". "At that time, to be honest, I didn't really understand why I had to memorize those lines, but I still gained effort and stamina in training. After that, even after her voice actor debut, she continued to hit a wall in her pursuit of roles that were beyond her understanding, but the days of struggle continued. It took her five years to find acting a joyful thing.
■ "First become a human being" is a life experience that is used in acting
Compared to live actors, voice actors have a wide range of roles regardless of age or gender. Sometimes they also play some non-human roles. So what do you do when creating a character that is far from your real self? Ise cited the Killua Puncher (2011), who he played for three years, and pointed out that it is not only the setting, but also the feelings of the characters.
"Even if it's a boy, the difference in pitch doesn't matter that much. And more importantly, the feelings that the characters have. Not only look at the appearance of the character, but also pay attention to his personality, think about the mood of the character, and naturally make a voice that belongs to the character. When Ise was voicing Killua for him, he was thinking about being Killua and then covering his mouth with a towel at home to practice his pronunciation and find the right voice.
Since Ise is fully integrated into the character of Killua, there are often arguments between the director and Pan Hye-mi, who voices Killua's friend Xiaojie, just like the relationship between the two characters in the play. In addition, when she saw Pan on the dubbing scene of other works, "I also had an incredible feeling: Why is Xiaojie here? This is the result of her giving her all for a role for 3 years.
In order to understand the mood of the characters, the specific way is to project yourself into the characters of movies and novels. It's a way to exercise your imagination. In addition, a plump personality is an indispensable and important factor in deducing realistic acting skills. She believes that "if an actor does not know himself by experiencing all kinds of things, then he cannot interpret others well." We need to ask ourselves often: Under what circumstances do you feel angry and sad? This kind of self-study is necessary. ”
■Is it really difficult for a rookie voice actor to make ends meet?
The audience members of the symposium participated in a questionnaire that was prepared in advance before asking questions to Ise. Some of them asked very explicitly: "How much money do you earn every month?" To this end, Ise talked about the "Junior" level that each newcomer has to go through in response to the remuneration system for voice actors.
The voice actor who belongs to the Japan Acting Federation has to go through a rookie period called "Junior" for three years after his debut. During the Junior period, the rookie voice actor had nothing to do with the said firm, and the remuneration for appearing in the episode was 15,000 yen. In this way, the Junior hierarchy system makes it easy for the person in charge of the program to hire a newcomer. During the GuòJunior period, newcomers experience various dubbing scenes and acquire techniques that will make them famous.
The voice actor is also paid to pay the brokerage fee to the office (the price varies depending on the office), and then he has to live with the rest of the money. Therefore, when the number of jobs is low, there are many new hires who participate in part-time jobs with flexible schedules and start voice actor activities.
While explaining the brutal reality of meritocracy, Ise cheered for the attendees: "There is only one life, and I don't think it's a bad thing to choose a safe way to survive. But it's great to have a dream, and if you always chase your dream, it's definitely a possibility that your dream will come true. Before thinking about 'what to do if you can't do it?' give yourself time and make up your mind to take on the challenge, and if you try your best and still fail, it's never too late to give up. ”
■Students of the voice actor major course express their impressions
After the symposium, the students who participated in this exclusive event also expressed their feelings. Among them was a student named Yukari Tabe (19 years old).
"From start to finish, the presentation was valuable. I gained courage from Ms. Ise's words. As Ms. Ise said, we should pay attention to the things we find in our daily lives. I love singing, and if I can become a voice actor, there will be a lot of opportunities to sing, so I have to believe in myself and work hard for it. Tabe expects to graduate next spring, and she plans to go to Tokyo as soon as she graduates.
■After the end of this exclusive event, a reporter interviewed her at the scene.
Q: The talk show has been a hard time. How do you feel about being able to serve as a senior to those who want to become voice actors?
Ise: These are all people who come to my talk show with a vision of being a voice actor. It was also a precious opportunity for myself, and on the contrary, I got a lot of sparkling energy from everyone. Once I started working, it was easy to get caught up in the complicated things in the industry and some topics that needed to be practiced, but in this venue, I was able to rediscover my original intention to become a voice actor and what happened during my training. It would be nice if my experience was something for everyone. The whole show was very happy.
Q: Most of the participants were students, so you avoided the technical aspects in the discussion and talked about it from the perspective of experience and spirituality.
Ise: No, that's really, really important to me. Technique is something that you will naturally master with the accumulation of performance experience, but the feeling of not giving up and the feeling of burning in your heart are not something that can be brought about by experience. Everyone is in this mood and has come to this exclusive event for this purpose, and I hope that they will continue to do so in the future. Not only voice actors, but also people with dreams, this mood is the most important. And I want to pass that on to everyone.
Q: In your speech, you said that you would "apply your life experience to your performance", but did Ms. Ise herself come across a role that made you feel this way?
Ise: It can be said that every corner**. The world in which the characters live is completely different from the world we live in, and it belongs to a kind of fantasy world. When I entered that world, I was able to experience it through the eyes of a character. This is something that only a voice actor can do. However, the feeling that the character has can only come from the heart of the performer. Therefore, even in our daily lives, we have to pay attention to our emotions. Even if these circumstances are unusual, they are easy to ignore. For example, when walking on the street, we should not just look at the front, but also raise our gaze a little. In this way, you can feel that the sky is very beautiful today, and even your daily life can have an impact on you. There are many examples of this. Just by paying a little attention, you can find inspiration from ordinary life that can be used in performance, right?
Q: In other words, you don't need to do anything special, just make your daily life fulfilling. So, Miss Ise must have thought about acting from time to time in her personal life?
Ise: Even when I'm crying or angry, I feel a little calm, and I think, "How can people cry like that?" This is the occupational disease of performers.
Q: When you get a new role, you should care more about the mood than what kind of voice you use, right?
Ise: In the beginning, I didn't think too much about it, I didn't think too much about it, I just used my own inspiration to perform. I interpret the characters in my own way, try to make the character's voice, and then take the sound director's advice and make appropriate adjustments.
Q: In your nearly 10-year career, was there a turning point for you?
Ise: Last year, I guess...... I realized that my imaginary career as a voice actor was different from reality, and that I would get hurt and regret it at work. I feel frustrated with my own performance, but I also want to make a breakthrough. Such a period is it. At that time, I came across a work called "The Flower of Evil". The dubbing of that work was different from normal, using a more immersive microphone. From that dubbing scene, I gained some experience that I had never experienced before, and I put it to good use in "Full Time Hunter", where I always starred. And my attitude towards work has changed. My turning point was "The Flower of Evil".
Q: In this work, you play a character called Nakamura. It's a very quirky girly character, but did you feel any influence on the breadth of your performance?
Ise: It's a role that I don't have in my heart, so it's not easy to get Nakamura into my heart. If I can't look like Nakamura in my daily life, I won't be able to enter the state of performance. The recording of "Evil Flower" lasted three months, and even when I went to other dubbing sets and stood in front of the microphone to perform, I could feel a sense of disobedience from normal recordings.
Q: So, what kind of character do you want to be in the future?
Ise: I'm not sure which style I'm going to go to, but I'm just doing what I can do, learning from my positive self, and absorbing knowledge to keep improving. For example, I go on trips, watch movies and stage plays, and put in my performances what I have learned in my daily life. I will work hard to become such an actor.
For voice actors, the correct intonation of Japanese and the technique of distinguishing between various sounds are indispensable. However, what Ise wants to convey to those who aim to be voice actors is that they should work harder to understand the thoughts and emotions of the characters than they do with the technology. At the end of the day, you need to have a strong will to become a voice actor and believe in yourself. Living as a voice actor, such a life is dangerous. However, those who work hard will definitely reap some results, right? And Ise herself proves this for us.
