Interview with the screenwriter of "Ghost in the Shell New Theatrical Version".
The latest theatrical version of the Ghost in the Shell series, Ghost in the Shell New Theatrical Version, was officially released to the audience on June 20, 2015. This work assembles the main lineup of "Ghost in the Shell ARISE", and Oki Fangding, who recently served as the script, was interviewed.
■The theme of this time is "Youth"
Q: The title of the theatrical version is "Ghost in the Shell New Theatrical Version", which is really simple.
A: We thought of a lot of options, but in the end, we went around and ruled them all out. It turned out to be a very simple name.
Q: In terms of the position of the work in the Ghost in the Shell series, how does this theatrical version relate to previous series?
A: There have been so many works in the past, so it's impossible to completely disconnect from the previous works. When we made zuò, we hoped that at least after watching "New Theatrical Version", everyone would be able to accept the plot of the previous series.
Q: Can you tell us more about the details?
A: The Boader series, which was launched in the form of theatrical screenings, offers different themes in each of the four works. The TV series "Alternative Architecture" is also based on the theme of "enemies". This time, the theme of "New Theatrical Version" was "youth" (laughs).
Q: Youth!? It's really hard to relate to the "Ghost in the Shell" in our impression.
A: Actually, in the Boader series, Suzi and the others were dispersed, and then awakened their respective powers. They ignore the rules of the so-called society and sprint regardless of the rules. In short, this embodies "youth", right? Although they have lost to their melancholy feelings and their fallen self before, with Suzi as the center, everyone is still creating their own future.
As for the theme I think, it is the "creation of the future" that was also reflected in the original work. And this time it was created with this purpose in mind.
Q: While describing Suko and others who had never been seen before, you also guided the plot back to the original work.
A: It's just to relate to the original work that we used the resources available to us as we pleased. This is also a summary of the "ARISE" series. In the future, we will be more disregardful, and in this sense, it also embodies "youth".
On the other hand, I also wanted to portray "a person who has no future, as far as his existence is concerned". And with the development of science and technology, such a phenomenon will definitely occur. For example, with the spread of gasoline, miners are gradually losing their jobs. This kind of people who can't keep up with high-tech developments will keep appearing. In the "New Theatrical Version", there is a person who "has a prosthetic body all over his body, but the parts on his body will no longer be produced in the future". In other words, I depicted the last resistance of the people who were "about to come to an end", and the battles of Suko and others, who created the future of Zào.
■ Straightforward attack on the theatrical version of the feature
Q: How did you feel when you actually wrote the script?
A: Why did the other members gather around Suzi? There are many parts that are difficult to illustrate in words. It was impossible for each character to emphasize "I followed Suzi because this place is great", so I spent a lot of effort on how to portray this.
The members were attracted to Suzi because they believed that there was a future in the direction they were heading and that they could show them scenery that they had never seen before. But in fact, Suzi can't break through the status quo on her own, so she needs a companion. So how exactly do you express this relationship? I'm looking forward to Director Nomura's excellent performance in terms of graphics.
Q: As a feature-length theatrical version of Ghost in the Shell, this is also a long-lost time since 2004's Ghost in the Shell 2INNOCENCE. That's enough to spark a lot of anticipation from fans, but did you realize that when you wrote the script?
A: This work is different from the previous ones, both physically and mentally. I was very confused at first, I couldn't think of a framework at all, and it was very hard to do this. If I brought the fans' thoughts into it, I might have collapsed, so I wanted to break down this work directly.
Q: After all, if you think it's such a big project......
A: When we had such a behemoth in front of us, Director Nomura and I were like Tokosa (laughs). But despite being overwhelmed, we held our chests high and faced the challenge as newcomers.
Q: After experiencing "ARISE" and "New Theatrical Version", has your understanding and opinion of "Ghost in the Shell" changed?
A: In the process of writing the script, I saw a lot of character backgrounds than ever before. If you look at the world through a character, you will discover something new, and I hope to be able to resonate with the audience. Even though it's a parallel world, we still make it with the mindset that "everyone can further enjoy the original and past video works", so we hope that everyone will be satisfied.
