Back to Ikebukuro! "Persona of the Headless Horseman" interview with Toyo Yongliyuki
Based on the light novel by Yoshigo Narita, the TV anime version of "Persona of the Headless Horseman" is finally back in season 2 after 4 years. This work, which has shaped the basic model of "youth group drama", will have more maverick and interesting characters in Season 2, making the story even more exciting. Of course, the old acquaintances who have been with us since Season 1 will continue to fight at the forefront of the battle.
Recently, Feng Yongli Xing, who starred in the Dragon Peak Emperor, was interviewed by Japanese media. Not only is he a voice actor, but he has already officially debuted as a singer. His debut work was the theme song "Reason......" for the PSV game "Headless Horseman Persona". Since he has such a deep connection with this work, let's listen to his feelings.
- Fans of "Headless Horseman Persona" must also be concerned about the news of your singer's debut. How do the people around you react?
Toyoonaga: Actually, I've been working underground since 2013, and this time my fans congratulated me on finally making my commercial debut. The voice actors who starred with me in "Persona the Headless Horseman" were actually so close that they were embarrassed to congratulate me in person, so they imitated the movements in the PV and joked with me (laughs). It makes me truly happy to be blessed by everyone.
INTERVIEWER Why did you choose to hold the CD delivery event at the Animate Ikebukuro store because you have a large number of female fans?
Toyonaga: yes. Recently, though, I've been able to attract some male fans because of some of my outspoken statements on radio shows. I am very happy. It doesn't matter if the fans are male or female, the more the merrier, and that's my goal for the near future.
INTERVIEWER What was the mood in which you wrote your debut song "Reason......"?
Toyonaga: "Reason...... is the theme song for the game Headless Horseman Persona Relay, which will be released on January 29. As someone who was born in the Showa period, my goal, of course, was to "create a theme song that suits the style of the work." At the same time, in order to follow the fashion trend and not look so outdated, I have tried my best to make it feel more like the "THE anime theme song". "Headless Horseman's Persona" itself is set in Ikebukuro, with a cold and brutal style, but it has a Showa-style nostalgic flavor, so I wanted that atmosphere to be incorporated into the song. I've never written this type of song before, so it was a challenge for me.
If I have the opportunity to write songs for other works in the future, I will also follow the style of the work.
INTERVIEWER What is the difference between an underground event and an official debut?
Toyonaga: Underground activities are about doing everything yourself, and it feels like you're making your own products. On the other hand, after their commercial debut, they are protected in every sense of the word. Since it is protected, it has to be fenced, so the degree of freedom is reduced...... However, Aniplex was very respectful of my ideas about Reason ......, and I was surprised to find that "there seems to be no difference between underground activities and commercial activities." So the biggest difference is propaganda (laughs). Maybe this time it was a special care for me, and I may not be so happy if I continue in the future.
- Ruri Saintebe (CV: Saki Fujita) sang the interlude "littleworld" in "Persona of the Headless Horseman ×2 Inheritance", and you were the lyricist, composer, and producer. Is there any difference between writing a song for someone else and writing a song for yourself?
Toyonaga: Simply put, the KEY that Saki Fujita and I can sing is different. Saki Fujita also sang an interlude in Season 1, and as a reference, I carefully studied what kind of songs she was suitable for.
The song "Littleworld" also reflects the requirements of the producer. However, the first request I received was: "Although she is an idol, the idol style should not be too heavy." Hopefully it can be a little more fantastical, and you can feel the dark part of the past. At the same time, it is still impossible to deviate from the fact that she is an idol. When I heard this, I couldn't help but say, "Say it again, please." It wasn't until the other party told me that "it was equivalent to adding idol elements to Shiina Ringo and the Tokyo Incident" that I finally understood. "Ah, I see."
When writing a song for someone else, you have to imagine what that person will be like when they are singing, which is the biggest difference from writing a song for yourself. You can't just write what comes to mind, you have to keep revising to get closer to the final product.
- Do you still want to write songs for others in the future?
Toyonaga: If anyone still wants me to write, I'll definitely accept it! Sometimes when writing a song for myself, it happens that "this song is not for me to sing". I hope that female singers can sing it. Whenever this happens, I desire to transcend gender boundaries.
This time, I felt very shy after listening to "Littleworld" sung by Saki Fujita. However, her soft and beautiful singing voice as Saint Bian Ruri is very good...... I don't know how to describe it, it's like the incredible feeling of first love. It's like the shyness of the diary I wrote when the girls in my class saw it (laughs).
- Oh oh ~ (laughs) Then the next question is to ask about "Headless Horseman Persona× 2 Inheritance". The first season aired in 2010, how do you feel about this new work after 4 years?
Toyonaga: I was 26 years old at the time, and now I'm 30 years old, and I don't know if I can reproduce the feeling of small fresh meat that the Emperor of Dragon Peak had at the beginning, and I'm a little confused. On the other hand, I'm looking forward to making use of the experience I've accumulated over the past four years. With the motivation of "I want to work hard", but at the same time, it is mixed with the uneasiness of "trying too hard and not looking like the Emperor of Dragon Peak", what a complicated mood.
In fact, during the recording, Superintendent Omori said to me: "The emperor just now is too old, do it again." "I'm really getting old (laughs). I've never been said that before, but that's the biggest difference. I will try to make up for the lost youth with my own skills and experience.
- "Headless Horseman Persona × 2" is divided into 3 parts: "Inheritance, Transfer, and Combination", and it will be broadcast for a long time. Do you have a plan to "want to act like this"?
Toyonaga: I'm not one who can do a very planned performance. However, I wanted to be able to match the performances and atmosphere of the other voice actors more harmoniously during the performance. In addition, Teijin has grown into a sophomore in high school, and also has younger students. So, it would be great if I could integrate his growth with my own growth.
"Persona of the Headless Horseman" is a very dazzling work with plot development, and while being confused by the plot, Teijin's own thoughts and what is hidden in his heart will gradually become clear. I hope that in the process, I can express some of the things from my own 30 years of life experience.
INTERVIEWER What was the recording scene like for the first time in four years?
Toyonaga: The members of Season 2 have hardly changed, and it feels like a class reunion. I've worked with a lot of people on other works over the years, so maybe it's a more friendly atmosphere now than it was back then.
Regarding the new characters in Season 2, Hiroshi Shimono, who played Aoba Kuronuma, and Yuki Ono, who starred in Six Thousand Scenes, said that they were "so nervous"! When I saw Hiroshi Shimono being bullied by Mamoru Miyano (who played Masatomi Kida), I would smile and say to him, "It looks like me in Season 1." "Actually, Shimono is my senior in terms of age, but I look at him with the same eyes as my junior (laughs). It's like a new classmate, it's really like a school.
The scene is still very lively, but once the official recording is made, everyone will be extra strict. I really like the feeling of being a "professional on the job".
- Was there anything interesting about the recording?
Toyonaga: Daisuke Ono, who plays Shizuo Heiwajima, is a very cheerful person (laughs). Mamoru Miyano and Hiroshi Kamiya, who played Orihara Rimaya, have a different feeling from the original Masami and Rinya when they perform chat room conversations, and there is a big difference, and these places are interesting. During the trial, many people will complain in the back, which is very noisy (laughs). As soon as everyone gets into the groove, there is a very strong atmosphere of serious work, and I am happy to feel like I am performing.
When Kamiya asked, "Is Gan Le (Riya's screen name) like this?" every time I would come back to him, "As long as you play it." (laughs)
INTERVIEWER So, what do you think is the appeal of your own Teijin character?
Toyonaga: During a recent recording, Yuichi Nakamura and Mamoru Miyano both told me, "Teito is the only one in the work who doesn't fight." Out of a group of physically strong people, Teijin is physically unfit for combat. Despite this, there is a secret hidden in his gentlemanly attitude, which makes people feel that if they end up making enemies with him, they must be the most terrifying. Even if he is played by other people and various situations, he can still handle it in an orderly manner and implement his ideas. He's a character who embodies the shadow side that everyone, especially adolescents, has.
Although there may be a little negative feeling, this kind of high school boy who does not hide the two sides of light and shadow is the charm of Teijin. I hope he will continue to live like this in the future (laughs).
INTERVIEWER Who else do you like besides Teijin?
Toyonaga: From Teijin's standpoint, Anri Sonohara is a special place for him. Putting that aside, my personal favorite is Selti. She is the most special one in the work, but she has more common sense than everyone else, and I like her disparity. She can use her mobile phone to communicate with others, and she is very reliable. Miyuki Sawajo performed her charm well, "Ah what's the matter, that helmeted creature is so cute!" "(laughs) I've been a big fan of Celti since Season 1.
INTERVIEWER If there is an original plot in Persona × 2, what kind of story do you think would be more interesting?
Toyonaga: I think the relationship between Teijin and Sonohara has become better, and the plot that is developing in the direction of love should be good. But if it really develops like this, then now this most comfortable relationship will no longer exist zài, so I hope that it will be a dream in the end. If it ends with a dream, there can actually be a triangular relationship with the minister.
The story of Silla and Selti is also good. Let's take a story about travel. The students who came to Liang School Park didn't know when they also appeared.。 Also, it would be more interesting if Rishiya and Shizuo were there all the time. In the end, a big event will happen (laughs). I want to see their stories in other places other than Ikebukuro.
INTERVIEWA is the key word of Persona Ikebukuro, so I'd love to see the story of how they went to other places. By the way, do you have any special memories or favorite spots in Ikebukuro?
Toyonaga: I was a drummer in a band when I was in junior high school, and I was obsessed with the arcade game "DrumMania" at KONAMI, a game center, and I was ranked No. 7 on the national charts.
At that time, I heard the gossip that the 4th place in the national ranking was haunting the Ikebukuro Game Center, so I went to Ikebukuro with my friends with the idea of "going to meet that strongman". Unfortunately, I didn't have the 4th place that day, so I went to Ikebukuro on weekends to find that guy and play DrumMania by the way, and I stuck with it for a while. One day, I finally saw the man...... That's an asura! His skill is beyond the realm of human beings, and the difference between 4th and 7th place is so far away that it scares me silly. I witnessed first-hand urban legends like Celti at the game center. This is really a real-life version of "Persona of the Headless Horseman". I couldn't have defeated that monster, so I lost without a fight (laughs).
Broadcast to Tencent**
Because of this youthful memory, Ikebukuro is a place full of memories in my heart. I don't know if the current No. 4 number one is still playing DrumMania at the Ikebukuro Game Center.
INTERVIEWER Maybe you're ranked 7th, and you're also a new urban legend of a "super junior high school player looking for an opponent everywhere". So, could you summarize the charm of Persona as a summary of this interview?
Toyonaga: Although Persona contains all kinds of twists and dark parts, it is a work that embodies various feelings. Secondly, the group drama is also a very big charm of this work. Each of the characters is the protagonist and lives on the streets of Ikebukuro. It's a great feeling that each of them has a separate story and finally comes together as a single line.
Therefore, I would like to tell the audience who has only been exposed to the world view of this work since the second season, "It would be a shame to give up after watching only one word". Although there are a lot of intriguing plots at the beginning, "but in the end, there is an unexpected big reversal, and it is definitely worth looking forward to", which I am sure of. I hope you can continue to watch.
- Finally, a few words to the fans who are looking forward to "Cheng".
Toyonaga: The new series "Headless Horseman Persona × 2" starts with "Sei", which will be broadcast in January, and will accompany you for more than 1 year. In such a long period of time, a lot of things will happen in the real world, and you will grow as a viewer, and I hope that this work can be one of the growth factors for everyone. "By the way, I also watched Persona of the Headless Horseman." I hope this work can be a work that will remain in everyone's memory like this. Immerse yourself in the world of Persona the Headless Horseman!
