Voice actor Tatsuo Suzuki talks about "Ghost in the Shell ARISE"

The latest installment in the Ghost in the Shell ARISE series, border: 3GhostTears, has been officially available to fans since June of this year. As a classic popular blockbuster, this work has had countless clusters since its birth, and this new work, the story of the heroine Grass Pheasant Motoko falling in love has also caused countless topics. In the plot, the person who falls in love with Suzi is a prosthetic technician Gan Laijing. The voice of this character is the male voice actor Tatsuo Suzuki, who has been growing in popularity in recent years. Since she is the lover of such a heroine, there are also a lot of difficulties in acting. So how exactly did Suzuki take on the challenge? Recently, some Japanese media conducted an exclusive interview with him, learning about "Ghost in the Shell ARISEborder: 3" and the bits and pieces of Gan Laijing.

■ I starred in a work that I have been enjoying since I was a child

Q: This time, you played the role of Gan Yorijing in "Ghost in the Shell ARISEborder: 3". Can you tell us a little bit about how you felt when you learned that you were going to be participating in this work?

Suzuki: I've been obsessed with Ghost in the Shell series since I was a kid. And being able to be a part of such a work makes me feel incredible.

I had heard that Ghost in the Shell was going to start a new series, but I didn't imagine myself as a guest voice actor at all, so I just thought "Since there is a new series, let's have fun watching it!" That's it (laughs)

And being able to play a role with such weight made me feel a little stunned. I was thinking, "Ah, I'm going to play......"

Q: Is it a dream come true?

Suzuki: I just heard about the show, and I felt like it wasn't real. And when I asked the producer what role I wanted to dub for, the answer I got was "Suko's lover". So he sighed: "It's difficult enough." ”

Q: In other words, it took a while to realize that this was not a dream, but a fact?

Suzuki: When I got my script, I finally found myself back in reality.

Q: How did you feel about your work at that time?

Suzuki: This time, "Ghost in the Shell" can be said to have turned the past on its head, and in the new story, I was able to participate as the main character, so I was full of excitement and excitement. And after seeing the plot, I naturally had a high estimate of the difficulty of dubbing in my heart (laughs). And with such a high level of difficulty, how can I successfully pass the level? While I was happy, this uneasiness also enveloped my heart.

Q: The audience is looking forward to it.

Suzuki: That's true. Of course, the person I am most looking forward to is myself. And can I perform Lai Jing well, so that I can feel satisfied as an audience when the work is broadcast? That's something I've been thinking about.

■Until now, I still can't figure out how old Gan Laijing is

Q: So as far as the role of Gan Laijing is concerned, does Mr. Suzuki have any ideas?

Suzuki: It's a very difficult role. The more I think about such people, the more I feel like I'm stuck in a labyrinth. And until now, I don't feel like I've come out of the maze.

Q: Are you still lost?

Suzuki: I haven't found a way to answer this question in my mind. In the world where Gan Lai Jing appeared, the prosthetic body was a very ordinary existence. Some people only keep their brains and robotize all other body parts; Others have a part of the torso transformed into a prosthetic body. And the character of Gan Laijing is a 100% prosthetic, and of course Suzi is the same. However, once the prosthesis is used, it is difficult to determine the true age of these people without special explanation, right?

That's what's so interesting about Ghost in the Shell. Therefore, I don't know how big the dry Lai Jing is this time. He himself once said, "Even if you are an old man, if you enter a new body, then you can sing the praises of youth." This passage also reflects his hesitation about age.

Although he is in an area where there is a lot of fighting, he may still be just a boy scout. I think his brain may be in his teens. And Gan Laijing's strong sense of companionship, as well as his respect and persistence for this consciousness, I think it can reflect some childishness. But maybe he's very old? So, until now, I can't figure out how old Gan Lai Jing is (laughs).

Q: And for such a man, Suko fell into a relationship.

Suzuki: I think the reason why Suko is obsessed with him is because he has a confused part of him, and a part that looks like an adult and a child at the same time.

In the other series of "Ghost in the Shell", Suko is not without interest in other men, and those men are all rational thinking characters, and at the same time have a simple side. And their interests and hobbies are almost all the same. In particular, some of the interests that belong to men are even more similar. And this is not reflected in the outward appearance, but more in the inner essence.

I think this time Gan Lai Jing also refers to the characteristics of the above-mentioned men. But even so, I still feel that I can't see through this character. He is the only character in the series to be portrayed as "Suko's lover", and because of this, there are even more mysteries about him. What is the truth that belongs to him? I still haven't figured it out.

Q: Without knowing the truth, you played this role very well. Is your performance the best answer to him?

Suzuki: Maybe so. But it's not me who judges whether it's right or wrong, it's the viewers who watch the work. They have their own view of the world of their works. If the audience can't accept my performance, that's the scariest thing. As an actor, no matter how many years of acting career we have experienced, we can't just judge things with our own thoughts.

Q: When dubbing Gan Laijing, do you have anything to pay attention to?

Suzuki: I couldn't feel his age, so I had to blur the areas that needed to reflect his age. I can only use my own voice to express my feelings about Gan Lai Jing, so I have to think about how to interpret his age and personal feelings.

The style of a video work is different from that of a painting, and there are many things that cannot be expressed in a painting (video) that has sound. Then I have to think: how to integrate into Gan Laijing's personality under such restrictions? As for the paintings, the elite producers at Production I.G brought us great work.

Q: What challenges did you face while recording?

Suzuki: When I first started recording, if I was with Suko, I would express something with my own will, and his voice had obvious ups and downs at that time. Because I think that's more in line with his style.

However, in this way, it may make him look like he is thinking about something even in his tone, so I gradually reduce the ups and downs of his voice.

However, in his heart, the performance when he is with Suzi and when he is not together is still different. Although on the surface, he doesn't seem to have changed, but as long as he is with Suzi, then Gan Lai Jing can reveal his feelings of having human nature. However, he has strict requirements for his own purposes, and often waveres. I also thought it was an incredible role when I was performing.

“OK! That's good" "It's a great match! "When the staff told me this, I was a little slow to praise them because I didn't have a very clear voice for the performance, and I didn't have a score in mind. But it seems that after listening to my voice, they thought it would be OK. All I can say is "It's so profound" (laughs).

Q: Isn't it natural for you to show the ups and downs of Gan Laijing's feelings?

Suzuki: I feel like I'm fully immersed in my work. The real calm approach is to know how to behave correctly under what circumstances. That's why I don't think I'm calm when I do the dubbing (laughs). I basically focused on thinking about the role of Gan Laijing when I was dubbing, so I really focused on it.

Q: What was the atmosphere like at the dubbing scene?

Suzuki: This time, I was dubbed separately with Ms. Maaya Sakamoto.

Q: Is there only two people?

Suzuki: There are only two people. When I looked at the video afterwards, I felt that it was thanks to the strict atmosphere of the two of us being alone at the time that made the work so great.

In addition, the atmosphere of "Ghost in the Shell" has also been passed on to ARISE, but through the difference in recording methods, ARISE has its own characteristics. Of course, there are also their own uniqueness in terms of staff. Looking at them, I naturally think: these are the people who have produced a lot of works so far!

■ Suko is a troublesome woman!?

Q: What do you think of a woman like Motoko Kusa Suzuki?

Suzuki: If I had to judge someone like me who lives in the ordinary world, it would be to describe her in one sentence: she is a very troublesome woman.

But although she is a very troublesome woman, she has a strong self and belief that transcends the trouble itself and lives a very chic life.

Q: Is that the case with ARISE?

Suzuki: This time the plot is the story before the formation of Ghost in the Shell, and the Suko who appears on the stage is very young, very immature, and has obvious emotional fluctuations. Sometimes, her judgment is also sluggish. If it was after the Ghost in the Shell was formed, I'm afraid it would be difficult for us to see this kind of Suzi.

I think the Motoko in ARISE is very cute. It's a cuteness that can only be revealed because it hasn't shown mature charm yet. Whether it is Suko in the theatrical version of director Oshii or Suko created by Mr. Kamiyama, it contains the director's own impression of Suko. In ARISE, Mr. Kuse's motoko made me feel cute. Because there are still many things in my heart that I can't make up my mind, I can show this cuteness to the fullest. Personally, I like this vegetarian the most.

Q: Could you please tell us about the highlights of this work?

Suzuki: I'm also very happy with the new series this time, and I've already seen the previous "Border:1" and "Border:2". The number of members is also increasing little by little, and if you are a fan of Ghost in the Shell, you will definitely feel excited to see it. And this time 3, it also contains this kind of part that allows everyone to vent their feelings. Another attraction is the Suzi statue that has never been depicted before. In the work, we can understand the various appearances of Suzi falling into love.

Previously, Suzi was running around chasing prisoners, and she didn't portray more of her human side that would lower her judgment because of the feeling of being in love, and she herself was teased by this feeling. I think that's another part of the charm.

In addition, "Border:1", "Border:2", and "Border:3" are all good works that the more you watch them, the more you want to watch them, and the more you watch them, the more you can immerse yourself in the image. The feeling of being brought into the plot is no joke. This is precisely the effect of the extraordinary talents of the animators who use the screen as a weapon to fight, and the careful storytelling.

After watching the video, I felt that it was a real asset to be able to work with these people and make a work together. At the end of the day, even if I try my best to dub the voice, it doesn't represent the whole story. If I were alone, I wouldn't have been able to finish the painting. And if the quality of the painting is not good enough, then the charm of ARISE will be reduced by two-thirds, right? I can only do as much as I can, but that's not enough. So I'd really like to have a good chat with the people who worked on the animation with me about this work. One of the charms of my work is that it makes me think this way (laughs).

Q: What would you like to say to the fans who like this work?
