0328 Desolate City
Fortress of San Carlos.
As an important military fortress, the garrison here was surprisingly lax.
Lorraine came up from the sensitive river with more than twenty heavily armed men, without identification or acquaintances, and easily entered the city with only a port authority landing permit with undried ink, and was not subjected to any difficulties when entering the city.
The city is also desolate, with uneven dirt roads and dirty alleys as far as the eye can see.
As the heart of the rainforest, the buildings here are mostly wooden houses made of local materials, the panels are simply cut but rarely painted, and the bark is mottled, grass, wildflowers, vines and even strange mushrooms can be seen.
The tallest building in the fortress was the central chapel, with a bell tower with a spire that exceeded the height of the lookout post on the city walls, about fifteen or sixteen meters high.
The most elaborate building in the fortress is the garrison commander's residence, built on the lakeside, four stories high, with a red roof and beige walls, and even the climbing vines have been trimmed to fill the left and right, but the main wall has not been stained in the slightest.
The carriage made its way through the few pedestrians, turning left and right, and stopping in front of a large three-story wooden house.
The cottage looks old, and it's not very well maintained.
The old wooden walls were patched like mosaics, and wood was used to patch the wood, but the owner did not choose a better replacement or inlay, but nailed it as perfunctorily as possible.
When Lorraine saw the sign of the wooden house, New CΓ‘diz, she was convinced that she had really arrived at a hotel.
He jumped out of the carriage with Henna in his arms, and with a wink, Freemanny knocked on the door of the hotel.
"It's coming, it's coming!"
A fiery voice burst out of the room, and Lorraine watched the sign tremble as it dripped, and thin clouds of floating ash dripped down the edge of the card.
The door slammed open, and the aisle was filled with a middle-aged woman with a big waist and a round apron, with a flattering smile on her face.
"Welcome to the comfort of Novaya CΓ‘diz! Gentlemen, what can Aunt Polyani do for you? β
Freemani tilted his chin haughtily: "How many rooms does your hotel have?" β
"There are two floors on the east and west floors, a total of eighteen rooms."
"Eighteen ......," Freemani estimated, "go clean up, we'll take them all." β
"It's all ......," Aunt Polyani hesitated for a moment, "I'm sorry, but the eight rooms in the West Building have already been booked by guests." I don't think there are many gentlemen, so why don't you just live in the East Building? β
"Got it?" Lorraine frowned, "San Carlos also has such a large flow of people in the dry season?" β
"Usually there is none." Seeing that it was Lorraine who asked, Aunt Polyani was much more cautious, "It's just unfortunate that a few adventurer gentlemen came from the other side of the lake ten days ago and occupied the west building. β
"Mr. Adventurer?"
"It seems that they are looking for some ancient treasure, twelve people, three days to advance to the rainforest, so far no news has come back."
"The adventurous team of Rainforest Treasures...... Could it be that he is an obsessive of the Mayan civilization? β
This group of brave men who pursued the mystery aroused Lorraine's interest.
"Freemani, go check in, what time...... A month should be almost. β
"Yes, sir!"
β¦β¦
Perhaps it was the dirty and dilapidated hotel façade that lowered people's expectations, and Lorraine found that the rooms in New CÑdiz were surprisingly good.
There were ten rooms in the West Building, Lorraine and Henna shared a two-bedroom luxury suite on the third floor, Lef, Daniel, Bartow, and Freemani each occupied a single room on the second floor, and a total of five standard rooms on the first floor, which were shared by ten stormtroopers, just enough to arrange all the manpower brought by Lorraine.
Lorraine followed the maid to the so-called luxury suite, and saw that the furnishings were not luxurious, but new, clean, and had a clear view, from the window you could see the scenery of the lakeside pier.
He stood by the window and looked at the San Carlos quietly moored in the distance, and before he knew it, he fell into a trance.
"You want to grab a ship?" Henna asked suddenly.
Lorraine subconsciously glanced into the room and found that the door was closed, and the previous maid was long gone.
He sighed.
"Five companies of civilian troops, two companies of grenadiers, eight shore guns, one Briganting and full sailors. With the information we already know, the armed forces of San Carlos are already much more powerful than Nelson guessed. In our current state, it's unlikely that we'll conquer here. β
"So you want to grab the ship?" Henna asked a second time.
"Ship grabbing is one of the reserved means, not the only option." Lorraine pointed out the window, "You see, with the church square as the center, this little fortress presents a completely different scene. β
"The west side is clean, the ground is paved with stone slabs, the wharf is built with flower beds, there are fountains and benches in the church square, and there are many more people on the street, most of them wearing military uniforms."
"The northernmost red-topped yellow wall is, according to Mr. Pilot, the official residence of Commander Torlesias. There is a stone barracks in front of his official residence, which is not surprising that it should be a barracks for the civilian army. β
"From north to south, next to the Commander's Mansion is a beautiful lakeside pier. There were only two ships on the berth, and Brigenting was apparently the St. Carlos, and the other large Sluop, which was unsurprisingly the ship of our neighbors, the group of adventurers. β
"The port authority at Lakeside Pier is huge, far beyond what is needed here as a tax card, and I guess the sailors will be stationed there, and the playground on the back of the port authority is where they train."
"Further south is the San Juan River Water Gate, a drawbridge with stone towers on both sides. There was also a garrison, and since the Nationalists controlled the fortress, it should be the two grenadier companies that controlled the drawbridge. β
"See? Mr. Pilot said that this is a military city, and judging from the planning of the city, I think the west city is the real military city, and the east city where we are located is ...... It was probably during the wet season that the Spaniards used it to settle the stranded merchants. β
Henna tilted her head and thought for a while, but when she found that she didn't understand the point, she simply asked, "What are you going to do?" β
"Hmm...... Two things. β
Lorraine walked over to the desk and spread out the paper, writing and talking.
"The first thing is to establish a communication channel with Nelson. When I got off the ship, I gave Drogo a mission, and he would come into town every day under the pretext of delivering wine. β
"Daniel stayed behind to dock with him, and asked him to find a way to send my letter to Nelson without using the pale dewdrops, and bring back the dynamics and plans of the troops."
Henna nodded.
"The second thing, even the little pilot knows that the commander and the two majors are not superiors and subordinates but collaborators, which can only show that they do not get along well, and it is not harmonious on the surface."
"We need to figure out the extent of this discord. Is it a pretense of fighting, a false and wronged snake, and a dead old man, or is it a longing for the opponent to bear the defeat and die on the spot...... This will determine where we go next. β
"To figure this out, we have to go to the military city."
As he spoke, Lorraine put away her pen, folded the letter paper, baked it with red paint, took off the chest ornament of her tuxedo and poked it heavily at the lacquer, and stamped her private seal.
He stared at Henna with bad intentions.
"Castilian and Moorish are often related, and there are many relatives of different colors in the family. How about being my cousin once? β
"Huh?"
