In fact, as early as before the Qin and Han dynasties, there was a custom of hanging peach charms during the Chinese New Year. The so-called peach charm, that is, the names of the legendary ghost gods "Shen Cha" and "Yu Lei" are written on two peach wood boards and hung on the left and right doors to drive away ghosts and suppress evil spirits. This custom lasted for more than a thousand years, and it was only in the fifth generation that people began to inscribe couplets on mahogany boards.

According to the record of "Song History Shu Family", five generations later, Meng Chang, the lord of Shu, "divided every year, ordered the bachelor to be the word, the inscription peach charm, and placed the bedroom around the door." At the end of the year (964 A.D.), the bachelor Xing Yinxun wrote, Chang with his non-work, self-appointed pen title cloud: New Year's Yuqing, Jiajie Changchun. ”

This is the earliest form of couplet, and it is also the earliest spring couplet in China.

After the Song Dynasty, it has been quite common for folk New Year to hang Spring Festival couplets, and the sentence "thousands of households on the day of the new peach" in Wang Anshi's poem is a true portrayal of the grand occasion at that time. Because the appearance of the Spring Festival couplets is closely related to the peach symbol, the ancients called the Spring Festival couplets "peach symbols".
