After the Wuchang Uprising, Wu Luzhen united with the Revolutionary Party and stationed troops to threaten the Beijing Division, which the Qing court did not expect, so the Qing imperial family wanted to send someone to assassinate Wu Luzhen.

However, Chen Kuilong, the governor of Zhili at the time, said in the "Mengjiaoting Miscellaneous Records" that Wu Luzhen "sent people to assassinate Xiangcheng (i.e., Yuan Shikai)". Ren Zhiming, who worked as a tutor in Tang Tianxi's family, Yuan Shikai's confidant, said in his memoirs: Tang Tianxi told him that it was Yuan Shikai who instigated Zhou Fulin and Ma Buzhou to assassinate Wu Luzhen.

When Zhou Fulin went to Shijiazhuang and summoned some officers to plot the assassination, Chen Qicai also participated, and Ma Buzhou was jointly bribed by them to assassinate Wu Luzhen.

Duan Qirui's eldest son, Duan Hongye, praised Ma Buzhou in front of He Sui afterwards, saying: "Ma Buzhou is a hero, enough friends, and his actions have saved a lot of things." ”

Therefore, the Qing court sent Chen Qicai and Yuan Shikai to assassinate Wu Luzhen through Duan Qirui.

Regardless of whether Wu Luzhen's murder was related to Yuan Shikai, Yuan Shikai must be the biggest beneficiary of his death.

The revolutionary party in the north did not have a unified organization, and after Wu Luzhen was killed, he lost his "horse head" and was even more in a state of doing his own thing.

In order to have a stable rear, an important means of Yuan Shikai was to use Wang Jingwei to control and suppress the activities of the revolutionary party in the north, so as to create good conditions for peace between the north and the south; Wang Jingwei has also made great efforts in this regard.
