Volume 2: Blood Holy War Interlude: The Dark Past (7)
The rain was falling, and the rain kept rolling down from Jervas's face with the iron mask, but at this moment, Jervis didn't seem to feel anything anymore.
In front of him, Burgess was lying on the ground, blood had stained the ground beneath him, and he was extremely weak at this moment.
Why is this happening? Jervis clenched his fists, why did the mentor who guided me fall to this point now, and why did all this?
"You're still there, aren't you? Burgess suddenly spoke.
"I'm here, Captain. Jervis quickly crouched down and replied.
"It's been a long time since I've called you by that name, it's good that you're here. Burgess gasped, "There is no way to treat my wounds, I know it myself, but before I die, I still want to talk to you again." β
"Say it, Captain. β
"After my death, Knox will be the captain and I believe he can take the position. Burgess squeezed out a smile as he turned pale, "You must convey my last command." β
"He killed you. Jervis said only one sentence, his eyes filled with both grief and anger.
"I know that because of him, we chose to operate with the BPRD, but I didn't expect that there were already traitors in ambush among them, and we all fell into the trap. β
"He's just dreaming an unrealistic dream!" Jervis almost gritted his teeth, "he doesn't understand why Wild Hunt has to act in the dark, he doesn't understand at all, with such a naΓ―ve idea, he can't do anything!"
Jervis was adamantly opposed to this mission from the beginning, and Knox was naΓ―ve enough to think that he could work with the BPRD, and said that this would make Wild Hunt an organization that could be under the sun.
"It's just stupid, Knox. Jervis rebuked him at the time, "You don't understand why we exist, justice is repeatedly exposed to the light, then it is not real justice, why don't you understand it until now?"
But in the end, Captain Burgess agreed to Knox's suggestion, and while Jervis didn't understand why the captain would agree to such a ridiculous opinion, since the captain who was his mentor had said so, he had no reason to object to it anymore.
The operation was perfect at the beginning, and Jervis himself could not have imagined that the Hunters would be so coordinated with the BPRD that for a moment, Jervis even believed that what Knox said was not entirely a pipe dream.
With such a smooth journey, near the end of the mission, Captain Burgess took several Wild Hunters and several members of the BPRD to act together. They were completely defenseless, as the previous battles seemed to have proven that the BPRD was a completely sincere ally.
Accidents finally happened, and several members of the BPRD suddenly launched a fierce attack on Burgess, and although they resisted desperately, they were still caught off guard by the surprise attack. And when Jervis received the call for help, there was only a mess left in front of him.
The bodies of the Wild Hunters lay scattered everywhere, and the members of the BPRD who launched the raid had all been killed, leaving only the seriously wounded Burgess barely breathing on the battlefield.
"Don't blame him, Jervis. "He didn't do anything wrong, and sometimes, the enemy doesn't necessarily come from the outside, but lurks around us all the time." β
"If he hadn't decided to do so, things wouldn't have turned out like this. "But since you have appointed him as the next captain, I will do my best to assist him." β
"I know, I know everything. Burgess's breath was getting weaker and weaker, "I should have said at that time, you are like me, and you are carrying such a painful past, because of this I want to be able to save you!"
"You've saved me, Captain. Jervis looked at Burgess's increasingly empty eyes and said, "I am grateful to you all my life, and as my mentor, I will never forget your kindness to me." β
"Don't talk about that over there, and now scold me happily, maybe it will make me a little happier. Burgess actually grinned, "Remember what I said, Jervais, don't get lost, never lose yourself......"
With the last of his strength, Burgess stroked the mask on Jervis's face, and the bright red blood remained on the mask. Burgess quietly stopped breathing, leaving Jervis alone in the tumultuous rain.
"Captain!" Jervis finally couldn't control the feelings he had been suppressing, and it had been six years since that incident, and it was the first time he felt the same pain as he had felt then.
The man who had been my mentor died. He was the one who saved my life and taught me how to live in the dark. And now the man who is the most important to him actually died in front of him like this.
Just like then, I could only watch my brother die in front of me, so didn't I change nothing?bastard! Why did I have to go through this!Didn't I swear I wouldn't let anyone die again!?
A few days later, Burgess's funeral was solemnly held, and after the funeral, Jervis came to Burgess's tombstone alone.
"I know you're going to be here. Knox walked slowly to his side, he didn't come here alone, and Winter, who was the team's chief of staff, also came.
"What do you want to say?" Jervis replied with a blank face, presumably because of the mask, which prevented Knox from seeing what kind of expression he was wearing.
"I hope you can take on the position of vice-captain, with your ability to be absolutely deserved, I hope you can seriously consider it. β
"I refuse. Jervis almost didn't think about it and refused, "I won't take the position of vice-captain, my current identity is what I want, and I won't want anything else." β
"I know you hate me, Jerviβ"
"Don't call that name. "Now there is only the liquidator standing in front of you, there is no one you are looking for, and I have made it clear that I will not be in the position of vice-captain." β
"I see. Knox sighed softly, "Since you are so resolute, I can't force it, I respect your opinion." β
Jervis didn't even want to answer, he quickly walked away from the two of them, but he didn't notice that Winter, who had been standing behind Knox, was staring at his back with a very subtle smile.
A full year passed, and Jervis was almost completely unbearable with Knox's proposed reforms, and he actually wanted to completely transform Wild Hunt into an organization like BPRD, did he forget how the captain died?
In such a situation, Winter, who had already become the vice-captain, suddenly came to the door.
"I know you're upset. Winter said to him, "Knox has a broken brain, and thinks that wild hunting can survive in the sun." β
"It's the captain's order, you'd better shut up. Jervis had sensed something was wrong in Winter's tone.
"Is that really what you think in your heart?" Winter laughed, "There are already many people who are dissatisfied, but I am not the only one, and this rebellion cannot be stopped. β
In an instant, Jervis pulled out the short knife from his waist and pressed it against Winter's neck, he already knew in his heart what Winter wanted to do.
"You bastards are trying to woo me. Jervis looked at Winter and said, "Do you think I'm going to attack my own companions if you still have the idea of rebellion?"
"Don't forget how the hell Captain Burgess died?" Winter looked at the blade without showing the slightest fear, "There are traitors among the BPRD, so will there be among us too?"
Winter was completely shaken by a simple sentence, and he inadvertently recalled the captain's words before he died: "The enemy does not necessarily come from outside, but always lurks around us." β
"Youβ" Jervis didn't put down his knife, but Winter could see the suspicions in his heart.
"We're all doing for the hunt!" Winter knew the time had come to decide the winner, "The dark justice will be completely defiled by him, are you, as the reckoner, ready to watch like this?"
"If that's what you say, then I can choose to ignore it. Jervis slowly lowered his knife, "But you remembered for me that everything I did was for the hunt, not for you!"
"Of course I know that and I'm glad you made the right choice. Winter laughs and knows that the winner of this fight is basically himself.
A few days later, a rebel army led by Winter launched a rebellion against Knox, and on that thrilling night, Jervis did nothing but sit quietly in his room.
Knox had actually come to him here, desperate for help from his former companions, but Jervis turned him down.
"Forgive me, Knox. Jervis said, "There's nothing I can do to help you." β
"I see, I see. Knox showed a wry smile that he had already expected, "You don't need to apologize, I should apologize to you, I killed the captain." β
"Knoxβ" Jervis was about to say something more, but Knox stopped him from saying what he was about to say.
"I get it. Knox smiled at him, "As a companion, I'm here to say goodbye to you, and I don't mind if I call you by your name one last time, Jervis." Promise me not to lose yourself!"
Knox left as soon as he finished speaking, and Jervis watched his back disappear completely, as if he had a premonition that this would be the final farewell.
Am I really doing the right thing? Jervis couldn't help but feel confused, he was like my brother at that time, and although I couldn't forgive him for some things, Knox was my companion after all!
What am I doing? Jervais began to wonder if he was doing the right thing, but if I chose to side with Knox, the darkness-hunting justice would cease to exist, and I was doing the right thing or was it wrong?
At this time, Winter's voice suddenly came from the radio.
"Members of the Wild Hunt, the traitor Knox who betrayed the Wild Hunt has been corrected by us, this time we have achieved an absolute victory, may the Wild Hunt live forever, and the dark justice will live forever!"
It's over. All of Jervis's worries immediately turned into a cloud of the past, and now that everything is over, Jervis knows that no matter what he does, he can't change this reality, so he can only survive in this reality.
"I'm just a prisoner of my own torture, and I have to throw away a lot of things for the sake of dark justice. "Jervis donned the black robe, something that he would only wear when he was moving.
'I don't know if I'm doing it right, Captain Burgess, Gawel. "But all I can do now is protect true justice in this darkness." β
